Cairus met Austin's attack head on, ducking under his snapping jaw and jabbing a hand at his soft throat, vaulting over his body after his attempt. Zoey lingered in the background, strangely transfixed by the battle. Of course, she knew she should want Austin to win after everything Cairus had done, but in this state, Austin wanted to kill her. And the death of Cairus was...strange to think about.

((Thanks for the confidence boost, everyone. I'll see what I can do about some music, and maybe even create a theme for this RP. Not sure what I could do. I still wish some of the earlier members of this RP would come back; Serenity, Insho, Aliucon, and the others I can't remember right off-hand.))

The brothers were standing next to Mika, having jumped right off the log as soon as they heard the commotion of battle start. They created a passive force-field in front of the three of them to protect against any attacks that might come their way.
"It's like I've said before about vampires and werewolves: they could be the nicest people you'd ever meet, but they are always at risk of losing control to their instincts," Jay stated to Jeremy and Mika.
"Yes, we know Austin and that he's a nice guy, and it's taxing to think he can become such a... monster," Jeremy said. This is why the brothers chose human over any other race; because sure the benefits were nice, but they would never wish to give up control of themselves.
"Losing control of oneself is the first sign of weakness," Jay mused softly.
"What can you do when that control is lost for you?" Jeremy asked in reply.
"Willpower; it's now or never. It may take all of his strength, but if he tried hard enough, he could control the uncontrollable," Jay responded.
"Ah, the young padawan, he has so much to learn," Jeremy quipped. They were still standing there, watching the battle through a supernatural window, wondering if maybe they should try to do something. The two combatants had to be at least five times all of their levels--apart from Zoey--though, so they wouldn't be able to do much.
Thank you for reading. I hope you have a wonderful day.

Austin felt the jab to his throat, and promptly fell, catching his breath.
You let him do that, didn't you?
Like I said, I'm not giving up without a fight.
"Zoey, don't stare. Go away."
Austin growled and got back up. He wouldn't go down that easily. But then there was a smile at the corners of his mouth. "I wonder something..." He decided that lunging wouldn't work. He had to wait on Cairus to strike. So, he growled and glared. "Mr. Vampire, can you hear me?"
Stupid human. You can't beat me. And neither can he. I'm invincible! That jab only took 5 HP.
Maybe neither of us can alone, but together...
He'll never listen to you.

Cairus landed gracefully after vaulting over the wolf, though his tense expression destroyed any illusion of his usual indifference. He looked down at himself in distaste, brushing dark wolf hairs off his bare chest. Taking his time to meticulously pick each hair off himself, he eventually looked up, his face it's usual refined expression, tinged with amusement. Mr. Vampire? How fetching, Cairus thought back to Austin. Although I would not think it was the time for conversation right now.

Austin smiled again. So he could hear him.
"Actually, it's quite the opposite. See, while I chat, the wolf won't move very much. It's too busy trying to get me to stop to think clearly. I would call you something else, but we were never properly introduced," Austin thought, concentrating with all his might as the wolf howled. "I'm not very strong compared to him, but I can stall his movement slightly. That should be enough for you to strike." Austin bounded toward Cairus. "As long as you see his mouth not matching his eyes, I still have some control. Good thing I sucked out that poison or I wouldn't even have this much of it."

Cairus rolled his eyes, this time sliding underneath Austin, standing upright once he was clear and abruptly raising both hands so that the ground underneath the wolf suddenly jerked upwards towards his belly. So every night you are to try and kill Zoey? What a perfect match, He thought sarcastically as the ground rushed up towards Austin.

"Ouch," Austin thought as the ground hit his belly, knocking the wind out of him. But he meant more than that with his comment. "Not every night. This...I never thought this would happen." For once, Austin's eyes showed sadness instead of anger. He whimpered slightly. Stop being weak and foolish, Human. Austin felt himself start running.
Who's the weak and foolish one if you're trying the same thing over and over? If it wouldn't work the first time, then...
Shut up. I'm here to kill Zoey.
It was then the wolf abruptly changed direction and went running straight for her.
No, no, no... Its legs wobbled, and it slowed down slightly.
"I'm getting some control back..." Austin smiled, forcing himself to slow down to a leisurely trot, giving Zoey time to run. "What else do you have that'll hurt me?"

Startled as Austin jumped towards her, Zoey paused only for a brief second before skittering into the highest branches of a tree. At least I will be able to watch and intervene if necessary, she thought, looking down nervously. The height reminded her uncomfortably of the roof of the cathedral where her and Austin's relationship blossomed.

Austin growled up the tree, but was relieved that she got away.
Don't think she's safe yet. Austin opened his mouth slowly as the man fought with every fiber of his being. Then, he closed his powerful jaws at the tree trunk, forcing the tree to fall over.
"Dammit. Someone stop me!"

With a flurry of movement, Cairus forced the tree to reroot itself, even if the roots had to pass through Austin's living flesh to be able to make it's way back to earth. Stop yourself, wolf. End this...farce with my blackbird. His eyes smouldered with anger before he stamped a foot to the ground, some thick lumps of earth shooting towards Austin.

"Hey wolf-man! What you got against vampires?" Jay suddenly shouted when he saw Austin chase Zoey up a tree. "Vampires are people too! Can't you realize that?"
"Shame, shame, shame, trying to kill someone that trusts you," Jeremy added, playing along with the distraction. "Give us the real Austin back!"
"Love, trust, compassion; all things I wouldn't expect a simple animal such as yourself to understand," Jay continued. "You have nobody to blame but yourself for your kind's bad reputation!" He stamped on the ground, creating a few sparks.
"No matter how strong you show yourself off to be, in the end your weakness is all that remains," Jeremy concluded.
"Why don't you just give up already!?" the brothers shouted in unison, then repeated, "Give us back the real Austin!" They were secretly pouring energy into their barrier, intending for Austin to run towards them.

Mika ran towards the brothers, realizing what they were doing. Intimidation is the best tactic it seems. Guess I should help them.

"Hey, Wolfy! Everything you've done since you took over Austin has been absolutely pathetic, you know. I mean- you are thick." said Mika, in a condensending tone. "An embaressment to werewolves everywhere. Look at you now. Going after a couple of vampires? How degrading. A fool like you is most foolish when behaving like a foolhardy foolish fool. Which is you. Fool."

He paused. "Now the real Austin... oh... he was brave. He was awesome. He was more powerful than you in ways you can't even imagine. You'll never beat him Wolf. You may have the body... but the spirit is him. So give him back to us!!" Mika shouted. Hopefully the distraction would be enough to provoke the wolf to attack them...

"I'm trying..." Austin thought toward Cairus as the wolf charged, impervious to the pieces of Earth shooting toward him. He growled at himself, only to hear the brothers trying to egg the wolf on. It won't work, he thought. The wolf goes on instinct, not on logic. And right now the bigger threat is the vampire, so that's what he'll attack. Then, he heard Mika talk about the "real Austin," and the wolf stopped dead in its tracks.
"Your real Austin is no more," it growled. "There is just me. I don't feel a thing, but he will once I take my leave." Austin decided to try communicating his thoughts to everyone as the wolf barked his laughter.
"Don't listen to him. Why do you think he's stopped if I'm not here?" The wolf took another step toward Cairus, but it was slow and shaky, as if Austin's human side has grown stronger.
They're right. Vampires are people, too. Like Jeremiah...
Yes, they are. They do not understand. Being in a relationship with her is too dangerous for either of you. You're defying nature, and you'll both have to pay the price for it. Unless you end it all now.
Maybe you're right, but killing her is not the answer. She is another human being trapped here, like we are.
B-but...
This is the full moon, and yet you are still not at your full power with me against you.
The wolf snarled and howled angrily, but didn't move. "Now's your chance," Austin thought to Cairus.

"Thanks, Mika," the brothers said softly as Mika joined them behind the barrier.
"Hmph, simple wolf, I expected as much," Jay remarked snarkily towards Austin with a heavy hint of a condescending tone, "You are nothing without Austin, but Austin can be everything without you! The real Austin doesn't need you, but you need him, else you wouldn't exist at all." He then thought even that might be too much logic.
"Vampires are a threat to you, you think? That's because you're weaker than the weakest vampire!" Jeremy heckled, "Ha...! The real Austin is much stronger than you will ever be! You can't even win against the man you were supposed to be able to gain control of when the full moon comes! He's STILL bringin' you down."
'C'mon Austin! You can do it. He won't be the one to bring you back, you can bring yourself back!' Jeremy thought afterward. He knew it wouldn't reach Austin via telepathy like Austin could do with the vampires--at least, he seemed to be able to do--but the determination showed on the brothers' faces, and they could see the wolf struggling to do almost anything now.

Zoey smiled sadly from her perch on the tree where she lingered much like her bird namesake. Austin... When the brothers and Mika tried to provoke him, she felt a warm glow of affection. It was strange, how mere days ago she was still the merciless character that Cairus had drilled into her despite her leaving him. Now...she had people in this game that she cared for other than Cairus. And she much preferred it to her cold efficiency of before.

Cairus took full advantage of the opening that Austin presented, flitting with his outstanding speed directly up to the wolf. It was a simple illusion that he could actually warp or teleport. Cairus couldn't possess that sort of skill along with any other player. It was merely that he had trained his vampiric speed so rigorously that he could tap into a speed so fast the naked eye couldn't see it. So when he appeared in front of the wolf, there was a split second where his scarlet eye looked into the canine's own. In this second, he communicated a rush of a message.

A grave mistake tore her from me, Austin Zimmern. I trust that you will look after my blackbird. Cairus flung his arm forwards towards Austin's neck with a needle before vanishing, not even waiting to see if the needle hit home.

It only contained knockout drugs.

The brothers tried provoking the wolf, who squirmed harder to be free of Austin, lifted his paw. But then...Austin...
She's right. I can't give in now, no matter what. The wolf put the paw back down and was again motionless.
A grave mistake tore her from me, Austin Zimmern. I trust that you will look after my blackbird. Austin beamed radiantly, barely even acknowledging the needle he saw Cairus with. He earned the vampire's trust, and he wouldn't betray it.
"Thank you." He started getting very sleepy, but he looked around. First at the brothers, who looked determined. Then, his eye flicked to Mika. Finally, having saved the best for last, he turned to Zoey and met her eyes. Then, he buckled as he turned back into a human. Pain coursed through his body, the injuries from the fight, but that was short lived as everything went black almost immediately. But there was no continuation screen, like Austin thought. Just sleep.

As soon as Cairus disappeared, Zoey dropped from the tree, rushing to Austin's side as he turned back into a human. She laid a hand gently over his, the searing warmth comforting. Wait...warmth? Blinking in confusion, she looked back to where Cairus had been. He...didn't kill him. Thoroughly confused, Zoey tightened her grip on Austin's hand. What's he planning now... Biting her lip, she returned her gaze to Austin's unconscious face in worry.

After seeing Cairus vanish, Austin fall to the ground and turn back into a human, and Zoey come down from the tree, the brothers put their hands against the barrier, calling it away and feeling some of the energy returning to them.
The brothers shouted, "Austin!" as they ran over to his body. They bent down and checked his vital signs. He was still warm, had a pulse (though it was slowing down a bit, but the brothers knew it was from him turning back into a human), and seemed to be breathing okay. Then they saw something sticking out of Austin's neck.
"Another needle! Though this one seems to have been laced with mere tranquilizers," Jay commented. He wasn't completely sure, but since Austin wasn't writhing in pain or dead cold, he could only assume that's all it was.
"Oh, Cairus... thank you for sparing our friend," the brothers said to the wind, not sure where Cairus had gone now. They weren't sure what to think of him. If they got to know him, the brothers thought, they would probably realize he's not the "bad guy" they thought he was at first. Maybe they were the evil ones in his eyes? The brothers could see why: Zoey had become fond of someone else and they were trying to protect him. Why was Cairus in the ambush though? Did he plan it? Was he there by coincidence? It was just so much to take in. The brothers moved back and looked for the fallen tree. Using their strength to roll it closer to Zoey and Austin, they again sat on it, this time facing Zoey and Austin. They started thinking again, trying to piece it all together, knowing it will probably never fit perfectly unless they could talk with Cairus again. Even then, the brothers knew the way Cairus answered questions, making it seem less and less probable that they would ever find out what they wanted.

Mika ran over to Austin's body at the same time as the brothers. I don't know what to say. Cairus just... spared him. I thought the two of them were... well, it doesn't now. Austin's human again. He thought to himself, a sense of happiness flowing through him. Something he hadn't felt in days. He turned to the brothers.

"You two are geniuses! Brilliant geniuses!" he shouted, referring of course, to the barrier and the taunting. Then he turned to Zoey. "And you, Zoey... Austin is very lucky to have someone like you by his side. Never giving hope."

He croutched down beside Austin's sleeping body. He looked so peaceful. "So... where shall we go now?" Mika asked Zoey.

Zoey looked up at Mika, surprised. Why does he ask me where to go? I am certainly no leader. "I...do not know. Now that Austin is human, there is no need to flee." She paused. "What is the next town over?"

"Well, there's a more modern city a mile north from here. Saw it (( :sawit: )) when I was in the air not so long ago. I think that should be our next destination. Maybe we can book into a hotel. And get some new clothes." Mika replied, glancing at Austin's tattered outfit, then at his own torn, burnt suit. He then looked at both Zoey and the brothers. "Ready to go when you all are."

"Actually," Zoey spoke quite suddenly, still crouched beside Austin. "As it is night, would it not be wiser to rest here? These woods are safe," she said. She couldn't risk running into any more werewolves at the full moon, as she doubted that Cairus would return tonight. Refraining from killing Austin much have been a hard decision, whatever his intentions were. Looking down at the wolf, she sighed. It seemed she was constantly in a state of worry nowadays. "Besides, Austin is not awake yet."

((Thought I posted here, but I didn't. Um...Oops. Also, this post is pretty long.))

Austin whimpered a little in his sleep as he dreamed. He was running down a white corridor with Jeremiah, who seemed to be attacking invisible enemies as Austin howled his most energetic song. He would have attacked, but he needed his energy in order to repair the system.
"Is this the right door?" Jeremiah asked, indicating a white door with blue electricity shooting out of it.
"That's the one, alright," Austin replied, opening the door and running inside, closely followed by Jeremiah. A head appeared in the center of the room and it looked at them with hatred in its eyes.
"What do you want?" it asked in a dual voice, the top one sounding female, the bottom sounding male.
"We would like to fix you," Austin replied evenly.
"If you're trying to fix me, why did you destroy my security?" the dual voice asked.
"Because they thought we were viruses," Jeremiah answered.
"And you're trying to tell me that you're not viruses?"
"Look, we're just players trapped in this game who would like to return home," Austin answered.
"Home?" the head tilted. "This should be your home." Austin opened his mouth to speak. "And for destroying my security and leaving me susceptible to virus attacks, you shall both pay the penalty. Deletion for the both of you." Austin felt himself pale; not sure what to do.
"I'm not going to let it do that to you," Jeremiah's voice said into Austin's mind. It was then the vampire strode forward and knelt.
"Permit me to speak, if you please," Jeremiah said evenly. The head nodded in his direction. "You see, Austin Zimmern is a great guy. Too great, even. He did not destroy any of your security at all, saving his energy to repair you. It was I who was causing all the trouble."
"Why did you do that?" the head asked.
"Because...I am a virus," Jeremiah lied. "You see, I masqueraded as a player of the game to get people to trust me. This dog was too weak to ever see through my lying." He smiled, showing his teeth.
"No...tell the truth!" Austin said, but not only in the dream.
"It is the truth," Jeremiah hissed, lunging at the head. It was then he disappeared. It was then the head turned to Austin.
"For placing trust where you shouldn't have, you have a price to pay as well." The world went black around Austin, and he wondered if he would ever wake up.
"Don't worry, Austin," Jeremiah's voice rang through the blackness. "You don't have me anymore, but you don't need me. You have Zoey, Jay, Jeremy, Mika, Ronan, Cody..."
Cody? Didn't he need some help tonight?
Austin forced his eyes open, a fresh wave of pain flooding through him as he did.
"Cody..." he said. "He said he needed help around now, didn't he?" His eyes started rolling to the back of his head. Whoo, those tranquilizers packed a punch. He couldn't help anyone like that, could he? "Um...Just a suggestion. No need to mind it."

((Ha, thanks for the reminder, Lida... I just looked back to page 16 and got some semi-nostalgia. Also, WHERE IS EVERYONE ELSE who said they'd be back by now? This is a shout-out to all of you guys if you are still reading this topic: GET BACK INTO THE STORY! PLEASE! ANY WAY YOU CAN! :yuusaku:Anyway, onto my post.))

"A modern city, huh?" Jay repeated thoughtfully. Then, he heard Austin begin to mumble in his tranquilizer-induced sleep, then saying something about telling the truth.
'I hope he's okay...' Jeremy thought as Austin seemed to jump out of his unconscious state, mentioning Cody.
"Cody? Oh, riiiiight! I remember now," Jay commented, a flood of realization washing over him, "We said we would meet him at the back gate to Tepple, didn't we?"
"Ah, man, I'd completely forgotten about that!" Jeremy said with a bit of anger in his voice directed towards himself, giving himself a mental slap on the forehead.
"But now that that tidal wave of a memory has hit us like a... well... tidal wave, that reminds me: I wonder what happened to everyone else?" Jay stated, "Y'know, everyone back at the cave..."
"I guess they went their own ways," Jeremy suggested, thinking back, "But we need to stick to the real question here: Shall we venture back to Tepple and meet up with Cody, continue on our journey to this 'modern city' Mika speaks of, or remain here until the morning sun vanquishes Austin's horrible curse?" The brothers pondered it for a minute, waiting to hear others' suggestions.

((I'm sorry, the Simon's Quest pseudo-reference was just too good to pass up. Also, I'm sorry I haven't been posting a lot lately. School blah blah blah higher priorities blah blah blah sea monkeys blah blah blah... wait what? Ah whatever.))

((Should someone PM Insho to see if he still lurks here?))

Zoey smiled weakly, helping Austin into a sitting position. "Right, Cody." She vaguely remembered his instructions, though it seemed an age ago that they had met him and the other players who had disappeared off somewhere. "Back to Tepple then." She eyed Austin carefully. "Can you travel?"

Austin leaned up slightly. A finger and a toe twitched.
"Um...That was my attempt to stand..." he said with a laugh. Then, pain seared through him and he grimaced. "You want to hear something funny?" He bit his lip, giving the others a chance to respond. Regardless of what it was, he continued. "I think Cairus actually semi-trusts me." His finger twitched again as he tried to reach toward Zoey. Grr, not quite having complete control of his limbs back was frustrating. "Well, this is bound to be a blast." He smiled his wolfish smile. "It won't be long until I can move semi-regularly again, but until then I'll need just a little help."

Zoey's posture stiffened at the name of the other vampire. "Cairus does not trust." Of this, she was completely sure. Cairus was evil. Complete, black, evil. There had to be some deep meaning or plot as to why he didn't kill Austin. There had to be. Because...Cairus was evil. Shaking her head slightly at the babbling nature of her thoughts, Zoey rose, placing her hands under Austin's armpits and lifting him to his feet gently while still holding him, though at a slight distance. "We...really should go. He will be expecting us."

Austin turned to Zoey soberly.
"Nobody is completely evil, Zoey. Everyone has good in them, and everyone has bad in them. I don't know what he did to you, and I probably never will, but I think you think that in order to explain why he did whatever he did," he said. It was then he realized Zoey had only said aloud that Cairus didn't trust. She never vocalized her thoughts on him being evil. Austin smiled, slightly embarrassed.
"Yes, we should." He nodded to Zoey and took a very shaky step forward, only to stumble slightly.

Chewing her lip, Zoey slung Austin's arm over her shoulder and took a few steps forwards. No matter what he says...Cairus must me evil. He has to be. She found herself blinking back tears, so she cleared her throat. "You go in front," she said to Mika and the brothers.

"Of course." replied Mika, pulling both the brothers' arms and walking ahead of Zoey and Austin.

"Zoey..." Austin said as they moved a few steps forward. He didn't know what to add. She was...crying. And he felt it was his fault. I knew he should have kept his mouth shut about Cairus. What an idiot I am! "I'm sorry..."

Of course, after Austin showed his concern, Zoey felt more tears well up and she blinked, a single drop escaping her eyes. "You do not need to be sorry for anything, Austin. It is not your fault." She took a deep breath, steadying Austin on her shoulders and moving after the three humans. Why didn't he kill Austin? The thought circled her mind like a vulture.

Austin nodded gravely.
"He didn't kill me because of you," he said matter-of-factly. "I trust that you will look after my Blackbird." He then smiled at Zoey. "You keep saving me, you know? I'll happily devote the rest of my life to repaying you." He wagged his behind where his tail once was.

"No, he does not..." Realising that it was hopeless trying to get Austin to understand her, Zoey sighed. "Well, you have saved me before. It is only fair I return the favour." She turned her head away, plodding after the three men in the lead.

"No, he does not..." Zoey cut herself off mid-sentence. Did she think he wouldn't understand? Well, in all fairness, you don't know what he did. Austin frowned slightly. What did he do to her that was so horrible? Should I have let him beat me?
"Well, you have saved me before. It is only fair I return the favour."
"You save my life more often than you'll ever know," Austin said, beaming. "Every time I look at you and think about you, consider my life saved." He paused, then chuckled. "Haha. That was incredibly corny." He stopped laughing. "But true nonetheless."

A humourless smile tilted the edges of Zoey's lips. "Corny indeed. But thank you. I feel the same." She wished she could tell him. She wanted to, so badly. But...she never spoke about it. Or even THOUGHT about it - should her thoughts meander to that territory, she would jerk them away. Of course, recent events had forced those memories out of the depths of her mind. "I wish..." she said suddenly. "I could tell you."

Austin beamed radiantly as Zoey told him she felt the same way he did. But then his smile fell as Zoey looked like she was tortured inside.
"You can tell me anything, Zo," Austin said. "And who knows? Talking about it might help." Austin then mentally scolded himself. Was there a chance she told someone before and they wound up betraying her? How could he force her to relive those memories? "But if you don't think talking about it will help, then by all means, don't." It's not like there aren't things about my past I'm entirely comfortable talking about...

Zoey opened and closed her mouth a few times as her thoughts conflicted. "I...It would probably easier if you asked things rather than me just tell a long...painful story." Even though she was the one half-dragging Austin to town, it was really him who was supporting her. Mentally. So she needed to tell him, to widen that trust.

"Easier to ask questions..." Austin echoed, thinking. Where would he start? He reached one of his hands out for Zoey's, making sure the other arm was draped around her shoulder.
"What did Cairus do?"
