in the context of roleplaying, would there be a narrator who'd inadvertently spoil things though? I was under the impression each player could only say lines of dialogue. i haven't roleplayed before so idk

"Hey come on guys, let's all get along." Flo said, hoping the group would finally listen to her. Given the continuing argument, it seemed to not be the case. She sighed and kept her thoughts to herself for now.

^That's perfectly fine. Flo is the only one speaking and doing anything significant

Technically Souther Corn's example is "ok", it's just cheap and especially would be if it weren't true and he was covering for someone else. I don't think a formal rule is needed, but if it ends up being a problem then I can adjust during the game

You just can't make other characters speak (literally putting words in their mouth). If I'm Flo, I can't give Franzise a line of dialogue. Monokuma can do all that though, he can do whatever he wants

Seriously though, this isn't a hard problem to solve, just say "No writing a character's internal thoughts"

Or if they do, treat it as if they accidentally said it instead of just thinking it

It would be annoying if anyone had the ability to write something like:

"Fine, I admit it. I killed him." John said, brazenly lying through his teeth.

None of the characters would know John was lying from that, but all of the users would. Which would just be annoying to deal with. Now everyone pretty much has to accuse them of lying, but without that narration they'd have no good reason to do so, meaning they're forcing their characters to act on meta knowledge.

I'd be fine with it as long as it's clearly public knowledge or something unimportant, though. Like someone could deliberately give their character a tell whenever they lie, and then write that action whenever they lie. At that point it's just good old-fashioned roleplaying. In my above example, it would be fine if the narration instead went ' "Fine, I admit it. I killed him." John said, though he was clearly lying'. Because then the implication is that the characters themselves can tell he's lying, or perhaps double-bluffing with fake tells.

Hmm, okay (also topic is booming huh, might send in questions via pms).

My impression was more like:

I really don't think he's the culprit you guys. It just seems too obvious, like someone set him up or something.

Then someone else posts:

Pffft. Yeah sure. You're just sayin' that cus you find him cute. He totally did it!

But I guess I'm thinking in the wrong direction. It's more like a collaborated novel from the looks of it. I might have to hold back the enthusiasm and just watch to see how RPing works.

Pretty much what KP said. They'd obviously know the truth, but would only be acting on meta knowledge, which wouldn't be fair.

@lonechallenger I recommend reading the last few Nonary Games on this forum if you're interested. They're based on the Zero Escape series, but no real prior knowledge of the series is needed for it. Pretty fun, plus you get a good sense of how RPs work from there.

Or you could just read the RPs section of the forums

Well, I don't think it's a matter of being fair or unfair. If someone posts information, then it's public, whether it was the truth or a lie. The only problem is that the characters themselves shouldn't really know the information, which is bad from a roleplaying perspective.

Though using narration to post lies would be a little unfair, I guess. I'd prefer not to have to ever doubt narration.

Yeah, when I used to RP here, we used novel style. That way our characters could do actions rather than just speaking. Though I guess you could do visual-novel style and put actions in asterisks. The latter's more "immersive" with things seeming to happen in real-time whereas the former is more descriptive, allowing for more complex actions.

I do have a question though: Having not played DR, I don't know when the "murdering" stops. What's the end scenario going to be in this game? Does the game end when a certain number of the class is dead? Is it a last-man-standing sort of thing? Are the "winners" who make it to the end?

Ok new rule: no posting a character's thoughts. Inconsequential thoughts will be overlooked. I don't think much elaboration is needed, you guys probably have a good idea of what is and isn't ok

@Slezak I'll be straight with you, I have no idea. I have motives planned for 5 chapters. If there's a very high body count, the game might end in 4. Usually there's a non-murder final chapter in DR games where it's like everyone vs. the mastermind or something but I'm not going there since the primary purpose of this game is just to solve murder mysteries

So yeah, the game will end when Monokuma has decided he's had enough fun

Quote:

The "winners" are those who escape. That can either be making it to the end or killing someone and getting away with it

But technically you can kill someone and get away with it, but then someone else kills someone else. Then the wrong person could be voted for and you could potentially die.

Also, couldn't the person wrongly accused also die? Will it be said whether the majority of the players were right or wrong in such a scenario?

If the true culprit is not discovered, I feel like the one with the most votes should die, and not just a random unlucky student.

I'm assuming it's like this:

If you kill someone and get away with it, you leave wherever it is everyone's trapped. You've won, and are now out of the game.

If people don't correctly vote for the blackened, a random person dies. JM said this was to stop people deliberately killing off someone and ignoring the whole blackened thing. Though he considered making it so the one voted for had a somewhat higher chance of being chosen by the random execution.

Plus, this makes it less risky to deliberately cause chaos. You won't immediately die just for intentionally making people think you were the blackened.

Keep in mind that I just receive people's murder plans, then I advance the story after choosing my favorite. A scenario like this wouldn't happen unless I wanted it to

Quote:

KamiPanda pretty much covered this, but it's also to give everyone incentive to participate in the class trial. Some people will have alibis for a murder scenario and pretty much won't be voted for ever. But there's still a risk that they can die so they'll need to help

Plus if the murderer frames someone for a crime, it'd be unfair for the one framed to be executed. They were just unlucky and died for it, nothing they could do

I do feel like, so everyone is able to participate in at least one class trial, that the first victim should be an NPC/"Test" murder. It'd suck to put time into RPing a character only to have them go out first round.

Don't worry, you can come up with it after the game's started because it'll take time for everyone to check in anyway. Knowing you're still on board is good enough

FYI, everybody's "abilities" are relatively minor. It was the only way to give some semblance of balance

I sent in my OC info a few hours ago.

I'm going to see my fiancee's grandpa in an hour or so, so I won't be able to check in until later tonight or maybe even tomorrow, but I'm very excited :) I used to RP all the time with friends in high school.

Slezak, it's been so long! I'm really glad to be able to play a game with you again! Maybe I'll stick around here after this game and chit chat with you in the forums.

If you're waiting, why not try working on your character some? Give them a full appearance, backstory and personality. These kind of games can be more fun when you're invested in your own character, because then their deaths become that much more meaningful.
