A horrible thought occured to Haley. A downright sinister thought, but one that she had to voice nonetheless.

"Micah... did you poison Shizune?"

"Yet you seem oddly concerned with how much time Shizune has left. Going so far as to accuse the rest of us of being 'monsters' for not caring about healing her." Haley's eyes narrowed. "You know none of us know how to make panacea, yet you insist on trying regardless, without any regard to whether or not any one of us will make it correctly. If I didn't know better, I'd say you poisoned both Ciro and Shizune... Ciro because he had easy access to pufferfish, a key ingredient in panacea, and Shizune for being in the way."

"I don't think Micah poisoned Ciro then." Benjamin responded to Brandy. "I was watching Ciro while he prepared the dinner and the only opportunity he had to poison the bowl was the 4 minutes I was at the lake. When I was there, Micah was there. Therefore I'm fairly confident it was Ciro who poisoned the bowl."

Micah walks over to Belphegor, her whole body shaking with fury.

"Mr. Belphegor can I please have those fish guts? Also can you tell me how to make Panacea?"

Belphegor laughs, dropping the bag in her hands.

"YOU WILL NEVER KNOW."

She turns to Haley, "Well maybe I'll do it myself!"

Benjamin suddenly slapped his head as he was transplanted a new memory. "Bloody hell, I completely forgot. I only started watching Ciro after he had poured the food in the blue bowl."

"I'm worried, but not about that. I'm worried that... Shizune might have killed Ciro," Seb said solemnly, acting like the sheer chaos around him was just a show playing on a TV he wasn't paying attention to. "It seems Ciro poisoned her, so we have a motive.

"Ciro was burning papers in the kitchen. He might have been burning correspondences from Shizune, carried by Bruce thanks to the whistle she had. It was somewhat suspicious how she hastily put away what she was writing when I entered.

"Ciro had no reason to prepare fish guts. Klifford didn't go to sleep at all, so I'm not sure how it fits, but, Shizune might have somehow gotten ahold of his notes and found out about panacea. Maybe she asked Ciro to prepare the pufferfish for her.

"None of this really points towards her, but, it's the only thing that seems to explain all the other evidence we've found, and if it really did happen, why would Shizune keep quiet about it unless it could potentially incriminate her? She might have been able to poison him by poisoning one of the messages she sent him, though that's just pure conjecture."

"I'm assuming Shizune's medicine would have to be ingested to kill? Meaning the poison would have to come from the police station--are we even sure Shizune could get ahold of it?" Benjamin asked.

"It certainly seems possible. But it doesn't answer the same questions you posed any better--namely Ciro's actions."

"No, Seb, you... you might be onto somethin'," Brandy said, a little afraid of the implications of her agreement. "I was actually gonna ask before, but what was your talk with her like? I know Klifford was in the room, too, but did anythin' seem suspicious in hindsight?"

"You would willingly risk being declared a tainted here, in the midst of a tribunal for all to see, regardless of whether or not you killed Ciro in the first place?" Haley closed her eyes. "Foolishness. Pure foolishness. You don't even know how to make it, but by some leap of logic, you think you can pull it off on your first try." Her eyes opened again, and she leaned into her podium.

"Know this. If you try to give Shizune anything, I will stop you myself. The only one I'd trust to even attempt to make panacea would be the good doctor, and I doubt he wouldn't try unless he expressly knew how to make it. Unlike some do-gooders who don't care."

"Nothing really. I asked how she was, and pressed her when she tried to tell me everything was alright. Micah stairs at the bag, she puts her ear up to it and squishes it around. She holds it up in front of her, limply.

"I'M NOT GOING TO KILL HER! So just knock it off, okay?! Talk to the other people, don't you hear them? They're the one's going after her. Not me," Micah's voice cracks as she talks to Haley, energy leaving her, fear seeping in.

Dear Sebastian,

Are you suggesting I was writing a poisoned letter to Mr. Pérez when you arrived? Please remember that you and Dr. Pratt were with me up until we heard the car crash.

As for the evidence you mention, could you please explain which pieces you mean? I'll do my best to discuss them if you wish.

Regards,
Shizune Takata

"Let's try to put the pieces together then." Benjamin sighed. "In all likelihood the black glass bottle contained the poison that Ciro put in Shizune's bowl. And in all likelihood he was carrying it as that would explain why it's broken on the street. It could've fallen out in the car, it doesn't matter but it was likely Ciro who had it.

"The paper burnt in the fire could be Shizune's correspondence, but it could be anything. Ciro broke the blue bowl for some reason too. Was it an accident? Or did Shizune send it to him via Bruce as if to say 'I know what you did' and he broke it in a panic? There's really no good way to tell what happened here without knowing why he was preparing the pufferfish. The only thing I will say is that the bowl was stained black so unless he prepared another poisoned meal, it's likely the same bowl from the feast.

"Ciro left the dojo and--this is important--he took the 'bottle of poison' with him. He didn't leave it in the kitchen, he took it with him. Why?" Benjamin frowned. "This is the extent of my futile speculation. Something else that may be worth mentioning is that I do remember Ciro doing the dishes after the upper cavern meal, and this would explain why he needed Seb's gloves. But I unfortunately don't remember whether or not he washed the blue bowl. I think it's likely that he did, and for some reason he used the same bowl again to poison something but this time he broke it."

He then read Shizune's message and his expression softened. "I was thinking the poisoned letter was earlier. But you're right, why send him more messages after he was already poisoned?

"The remaining evidence is: the pufferfish guts Ciro had, the papers he was burning in his kitchen, 'panacea', and then to a lesser degree the Bruce whistle by your bed, the medicine room that was rifled through and your medicine which can have dangerous effects if mishandled. Just about everything else has been explained already, barring the blackened bottle, though I believe that was simply the bottle of poison Ciro had back in the icy caverns, which he... used to poison you with. The black stains would match up with the black stains on the bowl you ate from."

Dear Sebastian,

Dr. Pratt left the whistle with me along with the bell in case I was in need of something. I believe you already understand the effects of my medicine, don't you? I'm afraid I don't know why the medicine room was searched, and don't entirely understand the meaning behind the evidence Mr. Pérez had; as you know, I was in the hospital the entire day and did not investigate with the rest of you, so anything I know about them is only what I've been told.

Yours truly,
Shizune Takata

"The stains can't be washed, but the poison can be. And yet Ciro used this same bowl again to prepare the pufferfish. I have no doubt in my mind that the pufferfish Ciro prepared is poisoned, using the same bowl as before for convenience. And the last great mystery is to find out why." Benjamin stated to nobody in particular. "Perhaps Shizune sent him a note saying 'Klifford cured me, I feel great now. I would leave a meal!' to provoke Ciro to finish her off. And yet I can't help but feel that the panacea still has to be relevant somehow. It can't be a coincidence that he prepared the pufferfish specifically."

He sighed with frustration. "Are we sure the killer can't be Klifford? Perhaps he found out that Ciro was the one who poisoned Shizune, so he sent a poisoned letter to Ciro asking him to prepare panacea. There's spare paper and typewriters in the tribune, and Klifford would also have much more mobility to get the poison than Shizune. The only question would be how he got Bruce's whistle, but it's less unbelievable that he got that from her than to think Shizune got the poison or information about the panacea."

"About the medicine room... I was actually the one who searched through it. I was desperate to try and find something for Shizune, so I looked through it until I found the medicine I gave her." Klifford said sheepishly. "Sorry for not mentioning it earlier."

"Shizune was asleep often, Klifford could take anything he wanted," Seb pointed out. "But I don't really think he did it either. Also, now that we know what the black stain is, we don't need to say that the pufferfish was prepared in the bowl anymore, right? He could have just prepared it on a cutting board like normal.

"Still, it's a shame you can't add anything, Shizune..." he added. "About your medicine, we understand its side-effects, but we still don't know for sure what exactly poisoned Ciro, assuming he was poisoned at all. So it's a contender."

“I’m fairly certain Ciro was poisoned, it’s the only thing that explains his behavior. He did fall asleep before impact after all.” Benjamin frowned. “But I suppose you’re right that he might’ve not used the bowl, i just assumed that that must be the case since it was broken. It doesn’t make much sense to hold onto it for days only to suddenly discard it in an obvious manner.”

Dear Mr. Bledsoe,

Is it not possible Mr. Pérez hit his head or sustained some other similar injury when he jumped into the car? Wouldn't that also impede his ability to drive and cause him to pass out?

“Of course it’s possible. But in that case Nail is the killer and there’s no purpose in finding any meaning to the rest of this evidence.” Benjamin shook his head. “There’s more to this. There has to be.”

Brandy rubbed her chin for a moment, trying to think of something to add. "There's a lot of abnormalities in this mystery, truly. But Ciro was poisoned, n' that's a fact. We can only go over the same pieces of evidence so many times 'fore we go absolutely bonkers. I think we've all reached some kind of conclusion in our minds. At least, I have. I don't really like it, though."

She placed a vote. She was exhausted.

"I'm done. I can't do this no more..."

The treasure hunter rested her head on her podium and let out a long sigh.

"You would vote for someone now? Even if... even if Ciro's the one who's responsible for all of this?"

"We're not just monsters. We're people. We can do what we want."

Micah looks up from the ground at Shizune. She takes off her mask. Under it, her face is heavily tearstained, a complete difference from when she took it off earlier. She crosses her arms over it.

"Anyway, I'm not giving up. There's gotta be more. Why did Benjamin have an injury on the back of his head? Maybe Ciro did that somehow? There seems like a whole lot of possibilities."

"Micah, you keep askin' questions and jus' loop 'round to blamin' Ciro again. What's the point?" Brandy spat. "Why bother askin' a smart question if you're jus' gonna take two steps back anyway? If there's so many possibilities, then talk about 'em, because we've been goin' in circles for a while now. I asked you before n' I'll ask you again, but do you actually have anythin' to say?"

"IF YOU DON'T THINK CIRO IS TO BLAME FOR THIS, I DON'T KNOW WHERE THE FUCK YOU'VE BEEN OR WHAT THE FUCK KIND OF EVIDENCE YOU'VE BEEN LOOKING AT!"

Micah gives Brandy the most serious possible look she can muster, given her stricken face.

"Why don't you answer my question, Brandy? Would you vote for an innocent person just because you could be technically correct?

"If I'm correct, they're not innocent, Micah," Brandy said coldly. "If they're innocent, then I'm wrong. I don't know if you remember, but the last trial wasn't fun for me. A man I once loved killed my best friend. Anyone is capable of anythin' in this game, n' you'd be an idiot to not acknowledge that."

She was gripping one side of her podium because, well, one arm.

"If you're afraid to accept somethin' as reality because it conflicts with your emotions, then I'm sorry, but you're a fool. I'm tryin' to be strong, because that's what she would want, but you're really testin' me right now, Micah. You really are. Do yourself a favor and get over yourself. Ciro sucked more than a trucker in a rest stop bathroom, but you've got to think rationally sometimes. Because otherwise... you're jus' a joke. A punchline. Is that all you wanna be? 'Cause that's what you are right now."

"So that's a yes, then. Okay, cool."

Micah's eyes flick down for a second, her face reddened with quiet anger.

"Next question. If you were asked to kill yourself, or else two random people you don't know will die, would you do it?"

"If I may interrupt."

Belphegor's cold voice rings through the tribunal.

"Regarding the medicine you found in Shizune's room:"

"IT DOES NOT HAVE THE POTENCY TO KILL SIMPLY BY COMING CLOSE TO IT."

"If your theory is that the killer sent Ciro a letter written with that medicine to poison him, it would not have made any effect on him had he simply read it. He would have been fine afterwards."
