I don't really like recent music, either. A lot of my favorite songs are music from before I was born, mostly rock music from the 70s and 80s, like Queen and The Rolling Stones. I was born in 1994, long after my favorite songs came out. The funny thing is, most of the music I like that was made after I was born isn't even in English, such as Gangnam Style and a lot of Jpop.

Good popular music died with the turn of the new millennium.

I think the literal representation of pop music dying was when Michael Jackson died.

Well I meant popular music rather than 'pop' music since R&B had a fair bit of time in the limelight (and it was awful too)

Agreed about raps though, takes a very special rap to hold my interest, the stuff in Madworld and some of the stuff in TWEWY are A-ok. I also used to like some of Eminem's early work but now? Rap just feels dirty.

I'm not much of a rap fan, but I can recognise talented rap artists. It seems like they're few and far between at the moment. :sadshoe:

As for Japanese music, that's a lot of what I listen to. But that's just because I like lots of the different bands. Listening in Japanese doesn't make much of a difference to me..

I don't like very much modern music, but generally I just like what I like. :ron:

I'm starting to fall victim to what I call Christmas Syndrome. There are so many things I'm hoping to get for Christmas that everything else seems boring by comparison. Then again, I fall victim to this whenever a game I'm really looking forward to is on the verge of being released...

So... ah... Is there anything anyone's expecting or hoping to get for Christmas (assuming you celebrate it)?

I also love love love pop music though, MARINA AND THE DIAMONDS TIL I DIE so you'll probably all think I have dreadful taste in music, I can live with that :javado: I just like music. I think pop music was awesome in the 90's though, Ace of Base omg <3

I always get chocolates and bath stuff for Christmas, bless my family. Any really awesome presents I get are what I buy myself hahahhaa, I can't wait to see what I get myself this year. I hope it's nothing from Poundland.

EDIT: oh yeah look, I made a psychedelic lock Image (this has nothing to do with anything I just wanted to post it).

Eminem was the only rapper i can actually tolerate and I loved his old music alot. The one song that always hit me the most was Stan. The lyrics really hit me. I also enjoy Biggie Smalls music as well back in the day when I was in middleschool. Pop music in the 90's was good. For me I enjoy old 80's and 90's music likeParty all the time by eddie murphy and Dont wanna fall in love by Jane Child. Another song i enjoyed that even though its meant for trolling is Never gonna give you up by Rick Astley :sillytrucy:

I'm co-operating with my parents to get a Wii-U. Sadly due to money bein' tight an all I need to pay the majority of it myself. Basically asked for Christmas Money early to buy it. I'll pick it up tomorrow and give it to them to wrap and right "From Santa" on.

I think when the time comes I'll present Santa as a 'spirit' that fills people rather than an actual figure to my kids.

Hope you get things you want for Christmas. I'm gonna spend this year's Christmas alone because my mom and her lover are going to America for Christmas until New Year's Eve. I don't mind being alone on Christmas, although I am - selfishly I guess - a bit concerned how the present thing is gonna be done.
Do we give each other's gifts before they leave and open on the 25th or give them when they're back, technically not until January 1st cause they will probably be jet-lagged when they come back?

Then again, I haven't gotten any gifts yet... speaking of gifts, I never actually get what I want, anyway.

That's the main reason my family has adopted a "Christmas list" system. Each year, we share our respective lists of things we want for Christmas. This way, we're able to ensure that we all get at least some of the things we want... though that doesn't mean we don't surprise each other on the side.

Living in the age of the internet, why not suggest you try and do a Skype-call or something on christmas day to open your presents on camera with them?

I don't think my mother has Skype. Or if she'll get it over in America.

That sounds nice but...
See, majority of the stuff I want are videogames. But mine would need to be imported, majority of the time. So otherwise a good present would be money. But I never get money. I get stuff like body scrubs or cosmetic brushes - due to the cosmetic training I did but no longer practice, art stuff - which is nice but I mostly draw on the pc now, what with the graphic tablet or... stoles and scarves... neither of which I wear cause they are annoying to wear and also... I don't know any 20+ year old who wears stoles these days.

@CatMuto -

I guess the time difference would be a big factor then, too. Still, it can't hurt to ask!

Even if your mother isn't big on technology, I think Skype walks you through the setup pretty coherently. Maybe it's not the same as being together on Christmas, but... it's Christmas.

And: If you don't have anything you want, maybe there's something you need but would rather not pay for? Household stuff. Maybe it's not fun to receive/unwrap, but hey.

... Even if you don't get stuff you really want, you're still getting free stuff.

Horray for free stuff I'm never gonna use... I kinda fail to see the point in that.
And what I need is not something you can get for Christmas. Money. And a Job.

You stupid DHL! I don't fucking CARE if you think you cannot help me because my fucking package, which was a small one that never has a tracking number to begin with, doesn't have a tracking number. I am pissed because your fucking mailman put my package into the care of a neighbor and then fucking failed at writing their fucking last name onto that fucking slip of paper!
Fire that asshole! And give me my fucking package!

It's Monday, guys! People should be, you know, leaving the house! For work! Or daycare! Or whatever the fuck place they go to during the day. Did you not see my note? "Please, whichever neighbor took in a package for [my last name], leave it in front of my door on the 2nd Floor. Thank you. Merry Christmas!" It's not that hard! You can't run up to your place and grab that thing, put it in front of my door? What, those two minutes would ruin your entire schedule? Then make sure you have more time!
I want my fucking package!

Yeah that last bit is the big deal really, because I think it's a really admirable belief that brings a lot of goodwill it's just a shame it needs to be tied into an actual physical form which can then be disproved. It just seems sense to name the 'spirit of christmas' Santa that way.

Also it sounds better than saying "Santa needs mummies and daddies to help him sometimes".

Yeah, I wonder if another vent thread will be created, considering the nature of the debates of the last one. I do hope another one will be created though, I need a place to vent small futile complications in my life.

Anywho I have some mixed feelings about December as a Dutch man. Until 5 December the constant debate of Sinterklaas and Black Pete wears you out. Having growed up with this holiday, I don't really have any special feelings/ attachments for Christmas, but the songs and decorations and all that jazz is just so in your face all the time, I don't like it.

Also I don't like the cold weather... but nothing that can be done about that.

Well, I opened one the next day, but it was closed by a mod and they said they would (eventually) open the Vent Thread again, once everyone had calmed down. Which seems silly, I had calmed down (from the discussed stuff before the thread was closed) pretty fast.
I need a place to vent.

Here you go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinterklaas

I guess the easiest way to explain this to someone who has never heard of Sinterklaas (or Saint Nicolas, which is his 'international' name) is to compare him to Santa Clause, with the red get up, helpers and distribution of presents.

The comparison isn't all that odd since parts Santa Clause were heavily inspired by Sinterklaas.

The problem however lies with the helper: Black Pete. Where Santa Clause's helpers are elves and reindeers, Black Pete is a white man whose face is painted black, with bright red lips and afro like hair.

Although the origins afro and red lipstick are debatable at best, but the black face paint comes from , as told in the stories, from soot stuck in chimneys which Pete has to crawl through to deliver presents (present through a chimney, sound familiar?)

So in the last couple of years around November the same Debate starts with 2 sides:
1: People who think Black Pete strongly resembles the 'Black face' phenomenon and say this tradition is a throwback to slavery
2: People who hold this festivity/tradition dearly in their hearts and don't want to change anything about it.

This year even the United Nations meddled with the debate supporting side 1 and exerting pressure on our political system. On the other hand there was a Facebook petition with 2 Million likes for keeping Pete the way he is (Mind you, the Netherlands only has less than 17 million people living in it), also exerting pressure on the political system.

So that's a basic rundown about the background and the escalating political debate surrounding it.
Face your emptiness don't be afraid. The danger is often smaller than your fear.

Isn't that the Mohrenkönig? Although that was apparently one of the three wise men... although if a man is the helper of a St Nicolas, then in Germany that is Nikolaus. On December 6th, giving chocolate or candy to people... this year, I completely forgot about that guy.
But if his helper is a guy then we called him Knecht Ruprecht.

Yes. Blackface is by and large an American thing in terms of historical shame.

I don't think the problem with Black Pete is that the concept is racist, but that the makeup associated with Black Pete is also associated with minstrel shows, etc. It's an issue of global culture clash.

People are 100% entitled to their traditions, and I don't think it's malicious. I also think it's insane that the UN got involved in this. But... If black people in the Netherlands are bothered by the associations, I can't really blame them. I feel like the best way to go about this is a compromise: maybe people could give him a different hairstyle (or a hat?) in their celebrations, and paint his lips a different color (blue would make sense)? Maybe they could use dark gray makeup or some more unnatural color, instead of pure black? I don't know.

This seems like one of those circumstances where you can't please everyone.

@ Sjibbey - Sorry! You're sick of hearing about it, and here we are talking about it even more.

Yeah, I know about Black Pete. They were talking about him on the news. I might not seem like the type to watch the news, but I do watch it daily. I have to know what's going on in the world, you know? It's weird that news about something from The Netherlands would have circulation here in Canada, but I can see the controversy. It's like this one high school in the US that still had segregated proms in 2008. 2008! Morgan Freeman made a documentary where he tried to get them to integrate their proms. When they were asked why they still have a segregated prom, they simply stated "That's the way it's always been." It's crazy.

Better yet, remove the prom entirely. Who cares, it's just people dressing up in clothes they'll never wear again and have wasted their money on, dancing to music that is not all that great and then think the actual idea of prom is to get laid.

I know Blak I wanted folks to elaborate on who "Black Pete" was.

Though don't be so disheartened Cat, some people enjoy the music, you can rent dresses and suits for proms so it's not like it matters if you only wear it once and for some folks it might be one of the last chances to all hang out together as school friends before going your separate ways.

Huh, I just realized that because I go to a private school, I'll never, ever have a prom...

Which doesn't change anything though, because noone'd go out with me anyway :sadshoe:

Hey, don't be so down on yourself!
Dating in high school is a really limited pool of people anyway, and even couples that go to prom together rarely last. There's a girl out there that will know what you're talking about if you mention "that FFVIII scene with Squall and Rinoa" - go find that one.

But there's also preprom and afterprom!!

Prom is really fun, you just gotta do what you want. My friends and I were the first ones on the dance floor, and we got our entire class to do the macarena, and then we literally spent the rest of actual prom playing card games. (There's always that one guy/couple that's first on the dance floor and breaks the ice, and we get to say that that was us... and with the macarena, no less!) And then preprom and afterprom is nothing but hanging out with your friends, so that's really fun~

I mean, you can use prom just as an excuse to hook up and get laid, but... idk, hanging out with all my friends before we went off to college, and doing various games and whatnot was really fun~

(Also, my prom "date" was one of my really good female friends. It's not like you need a "real" date for it... xP)

That's another thing I don't get... people thinking that just because two people went to a school dance together, it means they are serious business, exclusive dating now. Come on, it's a school dance. It's not like you proposed to that person in front of an audience.
What the hell, a guy semi-flirts with a girl and her guy then asks her, "Doesn't he know I took you to the dance?"
...and that means something because...? Seriously. It's just a school dance, maybe they said yes to not let you down or be simply friendly.

Of course, if proms were like that FFVIII scene with Squall and Rinoa....

Oh yeah that scene is awesome... shoving your finger into the asocial guy's face and saying "You'reGonnaLikeMeYou'reGonnaLikeMe... Does it work, tihihi?" and then dragging him onto the dance floor, him stumbling and bumping into another couple and then having the balls to look offended because he's so bad at dancing... Totally romantic. :ron:

PS: Nothing against Eyes On Me, it's a nice song and a nice melody... I just think they should've gotten someone who can actually speak English properly to write and sing the English lyrics.

Actually, the reason Rinoa looked kinda pissed is because she was glaring at the other couple.

Doesn't old european mythology like Black Pete sort of pre-date the big slave trade era?

Don't worry, the discussion is out of the news now and everyone is busy with Christmas, so this discussion isn't that tiring anymore.

But I'm afraid I have to disappoint you. The origin of Black Pete is racist. He's officially also not a helper, but called a servant. Although in his current role he is friendly, cheerful and helping, around 150 - 160 years ago he was definitely the bad guy. If you were naughty he would spank kids with a bundle of sticks (the 'roe') and kidnap them in a big bag to Spain (Now going to Spain for free sounds nice, but as a child being taken from your family scares the living daylight out of you).
His likeliness is originated from the Dutch slave trade. Since the holiday was introduced around 1850 they needed an 'excuse' on how Saint Nicolas is able to deliver presents to every child on one day. This is why he needs many servants and in 1850 the first thing that would spring to mind as a 'servant' would be a black man.

Since this role doesn't fit in current day society standards his role changed from servant to a certain kind of manager. Like the Smurfs every Pete has currently a distinctive role or task which he or she supervises. But the debate continues because his appearance is relatively the same nowadays.
Face your emptiness don't be afraid. The danger is often smaller than your fear.

Still. The fact that, after stumbling into the other couple, Squall dances better should have been a pretty good indication to Rinoa that he did not really want to be there in the first place. He just started to dance better to avoid more social-bumping contact with other students.

See, this is a reason why I dislike Rinoa so much. He is so stupid! As I mentioned, twirling her finger and saying "You'reGonnaLikeMe" over and over is stupid and annoying, not to mention it's kinda rude to shove your finger into someone's face.
She's insensitive and doesn't understand that some people don't want to do social things, like dancing. Also, she switches from Seifer to Squall in, like, a second for no other reason than... fuck it, I don't even remember the reason.
Overall, I find her and Squall's "romance" to be unbelievable.
Rinoa has stupid plans that won't work, like putting that magic-blocking bracelet onto Edea, and has to be rescued because she was too stupid to realize that her plans never work. She is so out of touch with the "real" world that she can't do a single thing on her own, unless Squall is nearby.
Even gaining magical powers later on doesn't make her any better.
She's still useless.

If you think about it, since when has a video game romance EVER really worked? It's always at least somewhat unrealistic, no matter which game you look at.
