My mom cooked a potato-charlotte-tomato-cheese concotion for supper. It was tastey, but she used her homemade spicy oil to cook it and it was a little too stomach-upsetting for both of us. Even I needed sour cream to not suffer while eating. So now I feel like eating... nachos.
Nachos, purely simple, salty nachos should settle my stomach a bit.

As Gumshoe so nicely says in Case 2-1: "We're not just a bunch of simpletons, pal!"

Can somebody explain something to me? Why do people bother translating Soundeffects in manga? Removing them and adding the translation of them can be done nicely, I've seen it done before, but also poorly, ridding the image of its charm of the original sound effect.

Others leave the soundeffects untranslated, but add little translation notes or asterixes, to explain what the soundeffect means. Overall, I find this to be silly. For one, most manga readers know what a sound effect means. For another, we can also easily figure ourselves out what kind of soundeffect would make sense to have at that moment.
I mean, if I see an image of one character slapping another and the SFX says パーチ I do not need a little note telling me that "パーチ is the sound of a slap" because my head sees what is going on and thinks "Ah. A slapping sound."

Even worse, I think, are when they literally translate the SFX, like the above パーチ being literally translated into Pachi and then giving me a translation note, telling me what the SFX actually means. It's silly. I don't need somebody to tell me what an SFX is!

Removing and adding the translation over: This is rather professional, but you need to have a good cleaner and a redrawer to pull it off well, as sometimes sfx can run into and over the drawings. The English publisher Viz Media does this.

Not removing, translating underneath, such as 'slap' and 'bam': This is the easiest to do, so those who like to know what the sfx is can know without much trouble. Most publishers do this.

Not removing, translating direct, such as 'zaa' and 'mogu': This is rather rare, but yeah, it happens. Mostly so people know how the original sfx sound, and if they don't know it, can know what it means too. Among publishers I can only think of Yen Press that does this.

Yeah, but overall it's silly... I mean, the SFX are... well, literal background stuff. They add a bit to the image, but not so much that it is the main focus on the page. Mostly, your eyes will focus on the bubbles, the image, then to the next bubble. SFX generally can be ignored or overlooked at such a part.

And as I said before, most people know which sound would seem appropriate to which image.
A translation is overall not needed... frankly, I think leaving it untranslated, without a note is nice enough.
It retains the images original charm and does not treat us like morons.
Also, nice chance to try to see how your katakana/hiragana study is coming along.

Not everyone who reads manga knows much about Japanese things, and it may be frustrating to those who don't read hiragana or katakana and want to know what is being said. I can understand not wanting to change the image, but having a translation/romanji vesion underneath or off to the side is not unreasonable. It's another language, after all. It doesn't mean they think we're morons. Sometimes understanding the sound effects might help with understanding the scene.

Some sound effects might not be clear from the outset.

Let's take a scene from AA5 for example, try and imagine it as a manga.

So we have Apollo and Athena discussing a case around the crime scene when in the distance they hear "In In In In In..." growing increasingly louder.

In this situation it's Fulbright preparing to bust onto the scene with "In Justice we Trust!"

As a manga, it would be appropriate to indicate that noise in the background as a sound effect, as otherwise how would we know there was one? However if someone didn't know the sound and the translator had been lazy and left in it's original form the climax when Fulbright bursts onto the scene would be sort of wasted, sure we'd have his catchphrase but we'd lose the comedic significance of him preparing it. Which was the whole point.

I guess what I'm saying is, the sound effect might be obvious in your example with the slap, but there's no way that can be extrapolated to every example. If the translator was to leave out the 'obvious' sound effects and only translate the more obscure ones it would appear inconsistent and unprofessional as well. So there's a good reason for every sound effect to be translated.

I'm not saying they shouldn't translate what is being said but the soundeffects. Okay, I know some English manga did not translate the small out-of-bubble things that were said by characters. That I can understand being annoying, cause you could be missing out on a potentially important thing being said or a joke.

And in Pierre's example, that is the difference between a Soundeffect and something that turns out to be something being said. In that case, it would be appropriate to translate, since it is something said and not a full on sound effect.

The only time I can think of an SFX not being translated and my not knowing what it was was "beda" which I rectified by simply checking the situation and thinking, "Okay... what COULD be the appropriate thing to happen as the funny thing in this scene?" and I realized, the character woke up to randomly burp and fall back asleep.

And I overall have to say, Japanese soundeffects are funnier than English ones at times. Um, the sfx "munimuni" for groping breasts, it's hilarious. Translating that to "grope" or maybe even "squeeze" is not all that fun. Also, I overall think a soundeffect should be just that.. the sound it would make, not explain what is happening. I mean, I work for Titania Scans, but one chapter had the sound effects be translated and put into the clean version as "airconditioner blow" or "cicada cry" which....... just plain ruins the image.

Yeah but this is what I was also saying, it would look unprofessional and inconsistent to only translate those things.
The scene could easily be changed to two people walking through a mansion, there's an untranslated sound effect in the background. It could be a creak, it could be the tick of a grandfather clock, it could be something much more sinister. Each one can add a different tone to the setting.

There's a perfectly valid reason to translate sound effects, your example was just quite obvious but it's still something that needs done.

So I'm actually wanting to watch some anime lately, but problem is there are so many I'm not exactly sure what to watch. I've already watched Dangan Ronpa, and to be honest attack on Titan and Free don't interest me, so does anyone have some suggestions of what to watch?

Finished watching RahXephon. Fairly enjoyable for the most part, though the latter parts of the series left me feeling a little underwhelmed.

And do you want current anime, or ny recoomendations in general?

Anime I'd reccomend, though you've probably already seen some of:

-Neon Genesis Evangelion (both original series and Rebuild, original series should be watched first though)
-Ghost in the Shell (both the films and Stand Alone Complex)
-Cowboy Bebop, Cowboy Bebop, COWBOY BEBOP
-Trigun
-Outlaw Star
-Death Note (at least the first two-thirds of it)
-Monster
-Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
-Any of the Gundam series, 08th MS Team in particular if you want something short yet utterly fantastic
-The library of Studio Ghibli, of course
-And for something more recent, Gargantia

Well, there's some anime food for thought.

No! I heavily suggest to stay far away from Evangelion, unless you are mentally, emotionally and physically stable. I am neither of those and I only read the Nightmare Fuel page for that series and was incapable of sleep for that night.
My husband had to watch the Rebuild 3.0 movie for his job and even he says that it's about as much of a Mindfuck as the original series was.

By the way, something I want to share. I just got myself a mug of milk and put it into the Obama mug. Basically, it's a white cup with a pic of Obama on it. Doesn't really mean anything to us, it's just something we got from America.

:adrian: *grinning* Is it half-and-half?
:lana: Kchihihi, nah, it's full-on milk.
:adrian: Too bad it's not half-skim and half-whole milk.
:lana: Not any worse than you stating that, the more often we wash this cup, the whiter Obama'll get.

It's been a while, but isn't that the first time he meets the Luteces? Or nearly the first? He doesn't exactly trust their vagaries. Also, he's not really looking at which ball he's picking. Also, Booker is a moron.

I've seen some good recommendations, but I haven't seen Sket-Dance between them.
I love this anime man, it has great humor, emotional moments but feels overall lighthearted. It's not a psychological drama like Dangan Ronpa, but I highly recommend it. If you really want the same sort of psychological drama I'd also recommend the first 2 series of Death Note, like previously mentioned.

Let's see here:
One Outs (psychological, sports)
Casshern Sins (psychological, action)
Escaflowne (action, mecha, fantasy)
Nodame Cantabile (romance, music, josei)
Hunter X Hunter (action, fantasy)
Trigun (action, sci-fi)

So I'm actually wanting to watch some anime lately, but problem is there are so many I'm not exactly sure what to watch. I've already watched Dangan Ronpa, and to be honest attack on Titan and Free don't interest me, so does anyone have some suggestions of what to watch?

I've seen some good recommendations, but I haven't seen Sket-Dance between them.
I love this anime man, it has great humor, emotional moments but feels overall lighthearted. It's not a psychological drama like Dangan Ronpa, but I highly recommend it. If you really want the same sort of psychological drama I'd also recommend the first 2 series of Death Note, like previously mentioned.

On a side note, where is that signature from? :will: It catches my attention.

Who's signature?
