Scanlations are great, a group of fans that bring us a fan-translated chapter of a manga, either released sporadically or not at all with an official translation.

It's great that you guys are motivated, but please, please! Know what you're doing! If you don't have the right tools to do things, don't do it. Especially when it comes to translating. You need a certain level of knowledge of the language you are translating from and the one you are translating into.

It's not just disgusting to look at if you don't know how to properly level the page you are working on, it's also annoying. The translation is a large part of this, too.

A roughly done translation makes it difficult to read the page in an easy flow. A lot of the times, it actually slows us down because we have to read what you put in, then translate what it actually means before we can continue onwards.

Worst offenders are people who make the characters talk off, like you literally translated one word after the other, without changing the sentence structure. Typos or spelling a word wrong can backfire terribly. And don't you ever use Chat typing!

It looks and sounds unproffesional to have the characters talk like young teenagers do in a chatroom. Yes, you might be lazy in writing this stuff, but that doesn't mean it's okay to do it like that. Or even talking in Chat so it fits the bubble. If you can't fit it in the bubble, alter the structure without losing information or even lower the font size.

What you just said, Cat, reminds me of the majority of video game translations in the 80s and early 90s, like The Legend Of Zelda, Zero Wing, and Ghosts and Goblins, just to name a few. The character of Fawful from the Mario And Luigi series is a parody of those types of translations.

Now lets say in addition to the standard gameplay there's an optional RAPE mechanic. Completely optional, you might not even know it's there if you don't follow a certain questline or something.

It's not forced in anyway, nothing compels the players to use it. Is it any less offensive that it exists in the game? No it's still offensive material.

Oversexualising a character can be offensive to people, whether it's forced or not.

Quite frankly? ...it wouldn't bother me. For Harvest Moon, sure, it would feel very off but it's optional, so it wouldn't bother me as much as other people. Especially if it's something very, very difficult to find, I might not even find out about it - until it might be mentioned on the internet forums. Also: A Persona game with an optional rape mechanic? Nothing would shock me, if it's in a Persona game.

It still wouldn't bother me much. It's like the people whose game was unwinnable in Skyward Sword if they did the Thunder Dragon section first or second and talked to the Goron after meeting the dragon. It didn't happen to me, and quite frankly, I had so much fun playing that game, it wouldn't bother me to "have to" replay it up to that point to get my save back. (Unless I was stupid and saved after talking to the Goron twice but... well, I overall don't talk to NPCs often...)

True. But the girl never gets pregnant. But, yes it would get boring after a while. That's why I would become the ruler of the world with my sexual attraction powers that I would have because of the rule of "protagonist". I'm not sure I can talk to you anymore...you just deadpanned your way into saying "I don't see how a rape mechanic would be offensive". Can you at least understand how it could be offensive for other people? That's what matters, if you can understand that other people can be legitimately offended by something without just "whining and complaining" then it's progress.

I can see why they'd be offended, but if it's optional, I kinda fail to see the point in whining about it.

Then it's not progress, the point is something like that is legitimately offensive whether it's optional or not. The mere existence of something into it is enough to cause affront. It's a valid opinion, you shouldn't call people "whiners" for it.

Let's go back to the original example. Let's say there's a really cool ability on one of the more risqué outfits (I'm afraid I don't know the abilities to comment) but lets say it's a class selection that a player really likes. The player however is forced to resort to an outfit they find offensive just to use an ability.

You can't say players aren't 'forced' to use those outfits therefore it's ok. They might indeed be forced to use them. Here's an example from X-2 which had a close enough mechanic. The Berserker dressphere is a great physical attacker and learns a great move called "evade and counter" where they auto-dodge standard physical moves and lash out. That skill alone can auto-win some fights in Via Purifico. However to access it you need to dress down to loincloths and 'sexy cavewoman' gear.

Some people are either going to be forced to play in an outfit they find offensive and tasteless or they are going to be denied a game mechanic they might enjoy because they are offended by an outfit.

It's not going to bother everyone but there will definitely be many people who roll their eyes and have a worse experience because of it and not have much choice in the matter.

Everyone has their own opinions so obviously they will never agree with each other which is why I don't understand why they keep fighting.
