"Mr. Shore, I'm not the one being Cross-Examined, now am I?" Hughes said knowingly. "But, if it'll help you sleep easier once the verdict is passed, the defendant was failing the victim's class... badly... The defendant also disrupted the victim's class on a daily basis, you know the type. As such, the defendant and the victim were not on good terms. If they didn't like each other very much, then who's to say Miss Teacher tried to lay down the law which didn't sit well with Mr. Student, so Mr. Student spins into a fury and kills Miss Teacher."

Hughes leaned against the gallery behind him. "Of course, any suggested motive is just conjecture, so nobody can know for sure except the killer." Hughes checked his watch. "Fourty seconds... You owe the entire court those fourty seconds of our lives back." He crossed his arms and leaned forward. "If you're going to ask a question, try asking the right one."

"Well, that's funny, Miss Brooks...There IS a bloody article of clothing in our court record...but I guess I must have missed the metting where we decided that A COAT IS A SHIRT!!!"

Hughes took off his suit jacket. "Perhaps a visual aide would be best." Hughes pointed to his shirt. "This is my shirt. I love this shirt." He grabbed his brown trench coat and put it on. "This is my coat. I also love my coat." Hughes grabbed a bottle of water from under his desk and splashed it on himself. "Hey look... because my coat wasn't buttoned up, I got water on my coat and my shirt. You see where I'm going with this?"

"Actually, Bryce does usually leave his coat unbuttoned. I meant to say blood on his clothes... sorry for causing you all so much trouble. From now on, I'm going to be a good girl and answer all of your questions down to the finest detail! I swear on my Grade Book!"

"That's uh... very nice, Miss Brooks," Hughes said nervously.

(Dammit!)

"Well, if you're going to answer questions down to the finest detail, could you elaborate on the crime scene for me? Like, what did the body look like? Where was the defendant facing? Those type of things."

"So many questions in one... Ummm... The body was on its back. It had blood all over it. The defendant was facing towards the body and he had blood all over the front of him. The blood was on his coat and shirt... Other than that, there wasn't anything about the room that I can think of that sticks out. It was pretty clean, except for the blood. It was pretty warm in there too, warmer than my room. I have a horrible draft in my classroom, so it was actually a little refreshing to get out of there."

Vincent chuckled with his hands on his hips. "Thank you for that information, Ms. Brooks...Now I know....

YOU WERE NOT AT THE SCENE!!!"

"Where exactly are you going with this?" Hughes asked expectantly. "Is there something you know that we don't?"

"I was so there! You have to believe me! I don't have so much free time that I come in here and pretend I saw something that I didn't!"

"It's not that I know something you don't...It's that WE know something the WITNESS doesn't! The window was open in the room where the crime took place, correct? And there was a draft coming in from outside. Thus, the room wasn't warm! IT WAS VERY COLD!"

Hughes reels back in shock. "But... But... How could I..."

(How could I have overlooked that? It was so obvious!)

"B-but the window was closed! At least it was when I was there..."

"Well, Detective Gumshoe reports the room being cold when he arrived, so either you, Slatemann, or Bryce opened the window. Tampering with a crime scene is a serious charge, Ms. Brooks. Start talking!"

"You heard the man, Miss Brooks," Hughes said calmly. "Please testify before the court about this window."

"Yes sir..."

~The window was shut.

:testimony:

- I am positive that the window was shut!

-I remember arriving at the scene of the crime by myself and noticing how warm it was... That is until I noticed the body...

-Bryce seemed a little chilly when I arrived, though...

-After he restrained Bryce, Mr. Slatemann told me to open up the window
-It smelled horrible in there, what with all the blood. I almost passed out, it smelled so bad.

:holdit:

"How is that even possible? If the room was as warm as you say, and Bryce was wearing a coat, he should have been anything but chilly!"

"Well... I can't explain it! He was just... standing there shivering is all! I don't know why, he just... was!"

"Witness, just calm down," Hughes said softly.

"I can't calm down! I saw the crime scene, he's telling me I didn't, it's just... so... CONFUSING!!!"

"Are you happy with yourself, defense?" Hughes asked. "Stop panicking my witness. If there's something about the window that bothers you, then just tell us!"

"I brought this up earlier, but it begs repeating! There's an unidentified footprint by that window that was relatively fresh! You say it happened during a fire drill, but we can't know that for sure! I say we can't make a fair judgement on this trial until we find out who made it!!!"

"Oh please..." Hughes said as he shook his head. "Is that it? You can't buy time with the footprint itself. I still hold that it is unrelated and was from a fire drill or something."

"Excuse me? Did you say a fire drill?"

"Yes, that makes sense doesn't it?" Hughes asked, proud of his answer.

"Well... The thing is... We haven't had a fire drill yet... At least not this semester."

"..." Hughes stood in silence for a moment. He sighed deeply and pounded his fist on his desk. "Thank you... For your honesty... Miss Brooks... As much as I hate to admit it... It suddenly seems as though the footprint has to be relevant, considering I don't see how it could have got there at this point."

Hughes leaned against the gallery behind him. "As such... the prosecution requests... another day to... look into the matter." Hughes sounded crushed.

The new judge speaks for the first time.
"I agree to that, more investigateion is needed.Court is now adjoured!"
Then the gavel smacks the desk and silences the room.
