I was recently replaying 2-3, which I don't really like btw, but I found something weird. I don't know if there has been a topic about this already, but I couldn't find it so:

When you go to the ringmasters room and you examine the photo's close to the top of the room, you'll get this quote:
:maya: We should put up pictures of all the clients who have been found Not Guilty.
:phoenix: What about the clients who were found Guilty?
:maya: Umm... We'll just pretend like they don't exist. How's that? ... Nick! Now you've got me thinking about losing cases! Why'd you do that?

And just for those who read this topic eventhough I warned them...
Spoiler: Just don't read this if you haven't completed JFA
Now this was before 2-4, so... Does this mean Phoenix is not the ace Attorney we thought he was!?

Franziska makes a mention of his perfect record. It's in the contradiction page.

Maybe they don't have to pretend and just forget because they have nothing to remember?

Yeah and that's what I found so weird... But Phoenix does really say: What about the clients who were found Guilty?

Meaning some of his clients have already been found guilty, thus he lost some cases... These cases couldn't have been against Franziska, cause she still wants to win(for the first time) in 2-3
Spoiler: Only read this if you completed JFA
Edgeworth only returns in part 2-4, so this makes Phoenix lose against some prosecutor we don't even know...

Well, the only known prosecutor that could've taken Phoenix out is Payne. I'm pretty sure you get to play all the cases against von Karma and Edgeworth. Therefore, Payne is the only other known Prosecutor from that time that Phoenix could've lost against. Maybe Payne is better than we thought... :payne:

He mentions he hadn't lost a case for 7 years in GS4, remember.

So what? The event of Maya saying this, happened in 2-3. If we count back for 7 years from GS4, we see that it starts after 3-5
Spoiler: Apollo Justice
Or 4-4 if you know what I mean... So it is possible for Payne to have a 7 years record, because the best defense attorney is gone :sadshoe: He turned into :hobohodo: after all...

:objection:

:maya: 's comment was that they should put up the pictures. If they decide to do this they will put up pictures of clients after recieving the not guilty verdict.

:phoenix: then says what about the clients who were found guilty, foolishly foolish fool that he is, already assuming he will lose cases in the future. Hence the contradiction, since the storyline implies he has a perfect win record.

However, if they were talking about the idea of putting up pictures after the verdict was declared...

Then the clients would have already been found guilty when they will be putting the pictures up after a guilty verdict

In this context, the contradicition disappears :ka-whip:

Unfortunately, I'm not sure if that came across clear enough :payne:

It's just the fact that Phoenix said 'were'. If he had used another form (like 'are') it would've been fine. He could have just misspoke. Or the writers overlooked this.
Spoiler: 1-2 and 3-1 spoiler
Like when Phoenix said 'I never thought I'd be in the defendant's chair' in 1-2 :P

Besides, if he did lose a trial, this is what happened:

:udgy: : Court is now in session for the trial of Lou Sar.
:payne-stroke: : The prosecution's hair is ready.
:udgy: : It seems the defense is not here... I must immediately jump to the conclusion that he is not ready! Therefore, I find the defendant guilty!
:beta-phoenix2: : What about my right to a trial?
:udgy: : Do I look like I care?
* :phoenix: and :maya: burst into the room*
 : Sorry we're late! We missed the bus.
:payne-stroke: : Actually, my hair has already won.
:ack: : WHAT?!
:maya-shock: : NIIIIIICK! This is all your fault! If you hadn't spent so much time getting your hair right, we could've gotten here on time!
:nick: : Yeah, but who's the one who insisted on a 79-course breakfast?
:hair-flip: : It doesn't matter. My hair has won! See ya later, loser.
:beta-phoenix2: : Huh? What about me?

I think they're saying IF they lose cases. Phoenix has never really lost a case (according to what we know), so I'm guessing he's just saying IF he ever lost a case, what would they do.
I explained it really badly, I know. The point is, he didn't lose. He's just asking what Maya would do IF he ever lost.

In my opinion, he's probably talking about future cases to come. He seems like a bit of a pessimist, after all.

This is basically what it is: He is talking about cases to come, it's was just written/translated (dunno, since I haven't played the original ^^') in a bad way that implied that he had lost a case.

Yup. Simple. What I don't get is why people had to think about it

Well like was said maya said we should put up picture which means if they ever did get a guilty client they could then put up pictures, it doesnt mean that he has had any guilty clients, except maybe lana even thought she was ound guilty of another crime

In GS4 as I recall they say that Phoenix had a nearly perfect win record with only one loss.
That would be 2-4, and he won all else.

I don't see the problem. Maya was just saying "What if we did this sometime?" and Phoenix was asking "What if any clients were found guilty by thar time?" basically.

I'm pretty sure Maya was just speaking hypothetically...

Not that good at the grammar of English but Phoenix clearly says: "Who were found Guilty" which means it's in the past...

Srry, if I don't understand the grammer good enough :payne:

The seven years that Payne refers to, is the seven years before his defeat by Mia in 3-1. :knock-knock:

"Who will have been found" would be more correct, however, in this case, future assumes present because they are taking hypothetically about the future. This often happens with story telling and examples. Listen to someone tell a story. They will say things like "So I go in and he's sitting there...", which is clearly present tense but intended past. Its common enough, so Phoenix isn't really making a mistake.

Maybe in advance if anyone ever does get found guilty?
