I wrote like a mini-essay on it in the Countdown Thread. I'll share it here :)

Let me share something with you all.

This case genuinely frightened me. And not in a "GUILTY!? NOOOOOO!" thing like 1-4 (Though I was literally shaking when Larry ran in to save me...). I was terrified of and for the characters and even myself.

The first time I played it, my dad was watching, and I was breaking Matt's Psyche-Lock. He commented on the music changing, and I agreed it was suspenseful. (After all it was the Suspense theme.)

Then Matt consulted himself, the chains flew away, and a sheet of glass was standing between me, Pearl, and a sociopath. It only got worse from there.

Calling me up in the lobby and taunting me about the verdict...I remember when Gumshoe said we had to prolong the trial, I was like "YES! YES! THERE'S HOPE! HOOOOOPE!" And I pledged that I'd do whatever I could to help everyone's fave detective ^^

Then his car crashed and I was like "..............It feels......like my soul is shattering before my eyes......"

The first time through I had no idea what or who Edgeworth was talking about, but this time I presented Franziska to him. The game even made the correct answer suspenseful, with Phoenix wondering if she'd even consider helping.

I literally screamed at the courtroom spectators who were giving Phoenix a hard time. I was like "Shut up! Shut UP! You don't UNDERSTAAAAND! DAD, they're acting like I'm defending a guilty person!"

He reminded me that I was.

I remember sweating out that final decision before Franziska bursts in, and I remember asking my dad to do it for me cause I couldn't live with myself no matter what I picked. Either way someone would die...

So we talked it out, considering the options and outcomes that weighed with my choices. He commented that it was a great game for making me think about my morals in this manner.

Eventually we decided together that Matt was guilty. We figured that, maybe, just maybe, they might be able to save Maya before de Killer heard the news. And we weren't about to let Matt get away. Not after everything we learned.

And then Franny burst in and handed over the evidence. ^_^

I figured since there was new evidence it must be between the last 3 pieces that the game wanted you to show. So I asked Dad what to do, though I knew the answer (I just wanted to see what he'd do :)), and he picked the videotape. So I clicked it too.

Urk! It's still not over! I need to give a reason for why he filmed it! The spoilers didn't say anything about this...!

Dad, with no hesitation: Blackmail. He did it to blackmail him.

Palms sweating, heart pounding, I clicked that final statement...

You cannot imagine the sigh of relief I breathed as everything played out. That case was an emotional wringer for me, and remains in my top 4. 1-4, 1-5 and 3-5 are bouncing around the top 4 too, and the number 1 spot changes every day.

But today, it's 2-4.

Remember when the radio broke down in Corrida's room?

If you listen well enough, it sounds close enough to De Killer's theme.

You know what'd suck?

de Killer: Mr. Wright, I understand you have something to show me?
Phoenix: Indeed I do. You recognize this tape, correct?
de Killer: No I don't.
Phoenix: ...What??
de Killer: I'm on a radio, you idiot. I can't see anything over there.
Phoenix: ....Oh. Right.
de Killer: Is that everything?
Phoenix: ..........Yeah. Pretty much.

Agreed, it would be lame if they overused it, but they've only used it twice, both involved a certain little spirit medium too... hmmmmmmmm...

Anyway, the first time though I picked the wrong thing once on what Edgeworth asked could do it, but being I wanted the good ending, I reset to my save point and thought harder about it, and then it made sense.

At the end, I knew the right answer, but I also wanted to see the bad ending, I kinda liked it too, it was sad and well done overall, very emotional.

Unluckily for me, I played through T&T and AJ before JFA, so I already knew that Maya would survive, but 2-4 is still a VERY intense case.

It was great and horrible at the same time seeing Nick's responses to... well, everything involving Maya's capture. It usually takes a lot to make me cry at video games, but this one really got to me.

Spoiler: I guess
I didn't care much in the beginning but when Engarde turned evil I sort of... woke up and just stared at him.
At that point I didn't want to leave the game for anything in the world until I had finished the case.
And I almost cried when Phoenix said that one line before the final court-day; "Today I stand in court as a defense attorney to prove a killer innocent."
That was just so sad...

And when I came to the final part with the final evidence I was almost sleeping again and I didn't really care what happened, and of course I choosed the wrong evidence which made me wake up again. I thought, "Ooooook? What's happening?" And when he came to the "I never saw Maya again" part, that's when I cried. I've never cried that much... and when it was over I had to watch it again because I didn't really understand what had happened.
I almost screamed at him when he said "a miracle is something that doesn't exist", "No! It's not true! You have to believe Nick! You have to! Don't say that! You can't give up! Not now, not yet!"

I was just so upset, and I had to look for a walkthrough to get the good ending.

Spoiler: For anyone who hasn't played T&T
Then I played T&T, and when I saw how cute young Phoenix was, it made me happy again.

I don't know what it was, but when Franziska burstin yelling "Objection" I felt... a weird ind of happiness that only experienced in real life, and rarely at that. I think... that feeling was happiness. Not just normal happiness but like 'Oh... my... GOD!' happiness. Its really hard to explain, but I think it was because this was everyone - Phoenix, Edgeworth, Gunshoe, even Franziska working together. Did anyone else feel like this when she burst in, or is it just me?

This case was epic. It's the last GS case I've played so far. I got AJ before JFA, actually. Played the games all out of order.

Anyway, it was epic because of the internal struggle it causes. Well, I make no secret that I liked Maya much more than *the AJ helper* (spoiler avoidance). So, since I played this one directly after AJ, it was great to be able to have Maya helping again. Then when she got kidnapped, I felt the same way as Phoenix. Right out of the gate, I was ready to pick "Not Guilty" in every decision.

And then it all comes to a head, when you see Matt's house, and his butler is Shelly de Killer. I examined that door at least ten times before I left. (Come on, man! Open it!)

And then you break Matt's psycholock, and he confesses to being the client. Go to the trial. Gumshoe's car crashes. I presented the tracker to Edgeworth, and we end up waiting for Franziska. I have to examine De Killer again. When he talks about me being a traitor, it was literally the most tense moment of the whole series for me.

The big decision. I picked "Not Guilty" again. Franziska's "Objection!" was amazing. I held off on moving through the statements just to listen to the theme song. Man, that's a great theme song. Anyway, when I get the final evidence, I disregard the bellboy's uniform out of hand. First, I try showing De Killer the spy camera. It's wrong, so I went through the alternate ending (:() start the decision over. I think about it this time. Down to two options. Show Matt the suicide note, or show De Killer the videotape. I get the feeling that Matt would know it was faked at this point. I decided to show De Killer the videotape. When I saw Edgeworth saying "Uh... um..." it was horrible. (Wait, I was wrong again?!) And then recovering from the brink! "I think there is some merit in showing this evidence to this person."

Final decision. I finally got to pick Guilty. That was probably the most satisfying moment of the series.

Yeah, I need to get a life.

I love it when it does that...fakes you out before showing that you're completely right. I plan on doing something like that in a game I'm making.

Defense: And here's my FINAL proof!
TAKE THAT! (presents a list of items; only one item has caught the court's interest during the case, but the answer is another item)
Witness: Hah? And what's this?
Prosecution: Mr. ____, we are asking for proof. I fail to even see what your theory is here...(long pause)....this (item #1) doesn't prove your theory at all!
Defense: ...I wasn't referring to that. Read the next item on the list.
Prosecution: The.......AAAAAAAHHHH!!!

@lalalei: That is really an interesting essay :edgy: that actually made me feel the moments of that case again!

Spoiler: for precaution
I... I really thought Maya will be dead :larry: I almost couldn't bring myself at the part we had to choose to plead guilty or not guilty... I was worriedI really winced and shuddered at the thought what would happen to Maya if I clicked plead guilty... THEN Franziska came. oh my gooood I was so relieved, that was probably the first time I'm so happy to see her, there's hope!! But then she showed the evidences, I couldn't make anything out of those and my hope fell apart at once TT_TT then I think de Killer said something about trust is everything and it came to me, ENGARDE BETRAYED YOOOU! see this tape! why didn't you watch the tape when you took it?! oh pleaaase let me tell him! Give me a chance to show the tape to him dammit! Then the judge asked the double question... I'm so happyyyyy :larry: and because of that I didn't know if the game had a sad ending, it was very sad.

I'm so happy how the case turned out, it felt really great to see Engarde panicking. The breakdown was a bit too much and quite unnerved me, but still satisfying. :larry: God I couldn't count how many times I panicked or almost cried during the whole case.

so far this is one of the most emotional case to me. Salutes to the writers :garyuu:

To be honest, JFA was the first PW game I played, and about halfway through 2-3, I was a little bored about how it was always a witness that did it, and Phoenix -while awesome in other ways- always seemed to have the moral high ground over absolutely everyone.

Spoiler:
And then 2-4 happened. I did kind of figure that Matt was a little fake, although I didn't think that he was a sociopathic murderer. Adrian was awesome, and I liked the fact that the traditional roles of prosecution and defense in PW (basically that the defense is always doing the right thing, and the prosecutors are all selfish and somewhat heartless) was reversed for that one case. My favourite bit though, was at the end where Phoenix has the choice to help Maya or Adrian. He knew that Adrian was innocent, but he didn't know if he could let his best friend die.

And then Franziska (of all people) storms into the courtroom and saves the day. And it was a nice ending.

So yes, I loved 2-4.

One thing I really remember about my first playthrough of 2-4 was this: (For some reason, I can never remember the exact wording of this, so I'll just paraphrase.)

:eh?: - *crashes car*
:edgeworth: - "Is there any way we can find out where Gumshoe is right now?"

:Me: - *talking to game* "Well, maybe... WAIT! OHMYGOD! FRANZISKA'S TRACKING DEVICE! She can help us!
...
...
...Wait, Franziska HELP US!?...Oh no, we're sooo screwed."

(And at the end, I screwed up and got the "bad ending". I have never cried so hard at a game before in my life.)

Spoiler: 2-4
Aaaagghh I wanted to see the good ending so bad that I used a walkthrough on the last part. For a while after Fransizka came in to save my butt (that made me feel so... relieved and happy at the same time, I should say, especially after I was swinging the DS around for hours going like "OMG WHAT DO I DO?! GUILTY OR NOT GUILTY?!), I had thought it was all over. Then they're all like, "Guess what punk? It's not over yet!" Me: *headdesk*
I was also panicking because when she was presenting the evidence, I had said that the gun wasn't important (hehe, turns out it wasn't) and I had saved afterwards, hopelessly clueless as to what to present. My first thought was, "NO. WAY. NO PLEASE! DON'T TELL ME IT WAS THE GUN ALL ALONG! OH DARN, AND I DIDN'T GET ANY INFORMATION ON IT! *panic panic* I'M SO SCREWED *cries*" Erm yea so I went online and it was an "ooooohh" moment. Now that I look back on it, I wonder if I could've figured it out if I wasn't so freaked out at the time. :yuusaku:

I know a lot of people have complaints about the second game. But 2-4 practically blows all of those complaints into thin air.

...The mental challenges can't really be put into words.

Spoiler: What happened at the end
I ended up crying when the reunion happened. I was so tense and when Maya, Pearl, and Phoenix all had a wonderful group hug, I completely flipped. It was a total :pearly: and :larry: moment.

And when it came to screaming

:objection: I shrieked it with tears running down my face. My mom stared. And for both times, I chose "Guilty" because in the end, I kept thinking about what Maya wrote, and she would've wanted Nick to do that. It was kind of like fulfilling her *possible* last wishes. I couldn't look when I tapped the options. And then :franny: came in. I swear, CAPCOM wanted us to have cardiac arrest. And when the crowd was chanting guilty, I thought 'Be quiet! Your best friend and possibly more isn't on the border between life and death and you're not the one trying to tip the scales!' I have proof now. Everyone tortures lawyers. And if I could leap into the game, I would've be the crowd, stealing Franny's whip and shut them up. While crying. Only the best video games can make people cry. :acro:

Since I have a "no walkthrough" rule, I had no idea what was coming. And now that I got the good ending, I don't want to go back to see what the bad ending is.

*sniff* I haven't played T&T yet, but no matter what, Farewell, My Turnabout shall forever more be my favorite and most heart wrenching cases.

But it was one of the most beautiful cases..(haven't played T&T yet, I live in good fuckin' Germany..)

Pretty much the BEST. CASE. EVER. CREATED.
The characters were sort of bland, but really interesting, especially
Spoiler:
the "Dumb" Matt and the "Evil" Matt. And, of course, the codependent Adrian and the moralistic assasin.

I already knew mostly what was going to happen, but it was just so freaking EPIC! Even more so than 1-5.
Plus, the whole thing was really moralistic, with all of the decisions "Someone's life will end whichever option I pick!" (I picked Guilty)
I was really mad when you examine the cat door at Engarde Mansion and Pearl tells you not to go in there. WTF?!?! I literally almost yelled that.
And of course, :shoe: .
It was just really cool for me. It was the last case I played, too, so maybe that affected it.
Not counting AJ of course.

What a gripping case! Definately my favourite case (granted I haven't played T&T yet, but I will!). It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

Spoiler:
When I finally unlocked Matt's :psycho-lock: and he switched personalities I had shivers running down my spine. It probably had something to do with the music as well! I had to stop myself from yelling at my DS at various times as I played some of the game when my little cousins were over and I was afraid something inapropriate would come out of my mouth

I'll be the dissenting voice - I thought it was the worst, most tedious case in the series.

It was interesting at first...right up until the mystery was solved. If it had ended just after Matt's confession, it still wouldn't be nearly my favourite, but it'd still be good.

But once the plot devolved into a series of 'We've found Maya! Wait, we lost her...buy more time!' I got tired of it very, very quickly.

The entire case was insane and overwhelming with and without a walkthrough, but I have to say that it was worth the struggle to get both of the endings. :phoenix:

It was dull and underwhelming, and really a letdown for the final case of a game. It's not that it was bad, it's that it was ruined by spoilers. And no, not spoilers from walkthroughs, but spoilers from the game itself. There was one spoiler that didn't come from the game; it was that Maya was unharmed, and it was from the T&T cover.

Anyway, onto the spoilers.

In the beginning of the case, Gumshoe says (paraphrasing), "It really looks like Engarde is guilty. All this evidence is piling up against him. It's almost as if it was set up!" Then what do you find out the next day? ZOMG it was set up!

And before that...

:phoenix: : Can I be your attorney?
:mattphone: : No.
:phoenix: : Please?
:mattphone: : No.
:phoenix: : Please?
:mattphone: : No.
:phoenix: : Please?
:mattphone: : No.
:phoenix: : Please?
:mattphone: : No.
:phoenix: : De Killer.
:matt: : Sure!

Gee. That isn't suspicious or anything. No siree.

The last one occurs later, in court. When you can give Adrian the guilty verdict, Phoenix thinks, "Hm... everything points to Adrian, but I don't think she's the killer 'cause she hasn't confessed. She must not be the killer!" So she isn't. And hm, I wonder who that leaves....

And then by the time everything has been explicitly laid out,
Spoiler:
:psycho-matt:

is really not that exciting.

I also really did not understand this part:
:radio: : Don't get the police involved, or else....
:phoenix: : GUMSHOEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

Also, since all you did in the second day of court was stall, it was really really boring and dull. It was an obvious "Oh look, Gumshoe is just gonna get here and save the day" then an obvious "Oh look, Franziska is just gonna get here and save the day" and then a frustrating "I'm sick of stalling. When will they come? HURRYUPALREADY."

btw, I'm not saying the case is bad. It's just nowhere near the level of a game-ending case.

Yeah, I guess the game sometimes works a bit more for people who are gullible. It's simply bad storytelling to not have ANY foreshadowing, but I guess for some people it was too much. For me, whenever something like that comes up, I just think "WTF?...Ah, it's just another question that'll be answered as we go along."

Also, as for Phoenix getting Gumshoe's help: The point is that you know him personally, and can trust him to avoid letting word break out.

I also feel they could have had something stronger to make you think Adrian's innocent than just the look on her face. Heck, Acro cried, and he was guilty. Maybe some extra evidence that just "didn't seem to fit?"
I'm gone for so long, and the colors got all psychedelic! Woohoo!

Yeah... this case could've been so much better if they had changed a few things:
1. Take out that stupid Gumshoe line about something not being right with the evidence.
2. Don't make Matt's reason for hiring Phoenix so stupidly suspicious
3.
Spoiler: Day 2 Investigation
And have :psycho-matt: before it becomes clear that Matt's guilty so it's a bit more of a shock. Finding out that Matt is guilty from that would have been much more of a shock than having it slowly come together from Gumshoe and Edgy.

I think if they fixed those things, court phase 1 wouldn't be so bad, although some evidence that "didn't fit" would've been nice, too.

Actually, that wasn't suspicious for me because of the way Nick said it. de Killer isn't exactly a normal name, and might have confused it with "the killer" I though. Meh.

And the fact that Matt is going along with the whims of "the killer" without any questions or anything isn't suspicious?
