It was just a doodle that Glen made. It was a little joke/reference that tied the 2 cases together mildly.

And small hiccups like that are unfortunately very common in the Ace Attorney series. I blame the localization team. But when you're having to come up with so many pop culture references as well as original jokes and puns while translating the plot from another language, I think you deserve to be cut a break.
Lighting candles is so that he doesn't use more than he needs, whereas using the microwave is a necessity for him. Cooking noodles. Perhaps cooking them on a hob would cost more in gas/electricity..
