Yeah, I really hate being spoiled for a upcoming game. For example, someone said that

Spoiler:
Kristoph was guilty

So I tried to erase that from my memory. On the other hand, I shouldn't have been in the Hydeout in the first place.

So I made a new Coffee Nicky-boy smiley.

Image

The one we have isn't animated and is less accurate since I was making this directly off the original sprite. (The eyes look flat and the coffee cup is scrunched. Nick is also facing us in the current smiley, while in the original sprite, he's facing to the right since it's in court.) No offense to who originally made it - I think you did a great job anyway- Detail is hard in such small images.)

Oh, and I know my Kristoph and Klavier smileys got kinda lost back there with all the jazzhands, so I want to re-submit the still versions. (I worked so hard on those... scratching everything but the base...) I did these off the original sprites as well. I love these ones so much!

Image Image

My opinion on this as well - I would love to see these up in the smiley box, but I think the originals should be kept up there as well since others worked just as hard on them. If we've got the same Ron jazzhands smiley (aside from the gloves), we can certainly have both of these up in my opinion. I don't mean to sound arrogant or anything, I just want to express what I think...

Thanks XD They took a ton of work. Image is the best one I've done so far.

I also did this one a while back, but I didn't scratch the hair. I only edited the original and animated it. It's supposed to be surprised Edgey.

I tried. It's hard. :sadshoe: My technique is 'scale down and clean up' for smilies, but when you scale down that cravat, it ends up as a pixelated mess.

So do I. Kristoph is somewhat better than Klavier, but the hair on both is off.
I know there is a lot to be said for doing it from scratch, and kudos to you for doing that, however sometimes you have to stick to basics and just cut out the sprite's hair, resize it and fit it to the base's face. I would recommend doing as such. The skill may not be as advanced, but the final product will be way better.

Anyway, I think I've got Kristoph's hair down a little better. I'll post my attempt in a minute.

Image If everyone approves, I'll transparentize this later. Gimp does weird things to my computer when I load it up, so I'm not going to deal with that this second. I do agree, though, now that I think about it, it was a bit off. :eh?:

And when I scale the original hair down, it doesn't retain the detail and turns into a pixelated mess... and comes out either too big or too small. (I use ctrl and the - or + sign in Paint instead of dragging the little boxes. Usually, dragging the little boxes results in an even larger mess.)

Looks a LOT better. :edgy: All that it needs is darker glasses.

And also, don't totally dismiss the "scale down" technique. It's how most of the smilies were made, and when you have the original for reference, it's pretty easy to clean them up. If you look at my previously mentioned Flash Tutorial, you can see that Godot's head didn't look so good scaled down either, but after a little cleanup, it looked really cool.

Lastly, you probably don't want to use Paint for smilies. It doesn't work so well with small stuff, and the color palette can drive anyone nuts. I'd of course, recommend GraphicsGale, but you might want to look into other programs that are better for pixel art.

Darker glasses? The style Kristoph wears is rimless... so what I did was I took the colours from the smiley base and used those to match a little better. If I went any darker, it would look like he was wearing framed, coloured glasses. I was actualy going to go lighter... but I decided against it. I know its important to see the detail and everything, but I really want everything to be completely accurate.

And I was looking at the site for GraphicsGale - between Gimp and Paint, I can do the exact same things. I've been using Paint forever, and so I've done extensive research on the program and I can use it to its fullest potential. It's a great editing program if you know all the advanced features of it. The great thing is that I can produce exactly what I want with it because it does everything I need and it's simple. The best program to use is essentially the one you know the best and feel most comfortable with. I've tried many other programs and I feel the most comfortable and used to Paint. And Mikker's tutorial posted by Darzie in the sprite forum further shows how much you have to know your program. I also don't know any Japanese characters either, so unless there is a language option, that program wouldn't work for me in the slightest. And the colour pallete is no issue for me, I just make my own and it works fine. :will:

English site: http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/us/

The actual program is in English, just I guess they didn't bother to redo an English screenie. You'd probably like it, it's about the same as paint, but it has one of the most awesome features ever: You can grab colors just by right clicking! No need to select an eyedropper and all that jazz. Plus it can zoom in farther than paint.

And, the reason I think the glasses should be darker is that they're barely visible right now.

I don't need to zoom in anymore than Paint's 8x... sometimes I work at 6x even since my eyes are just that good and it lets me see more of what I'm working on. And the same grid feature that I saw in the pictures on the website works in Paint as well. All you do is ctrl and g, and on 6/8x the grid will pop up. I don't need it anyway because I know how large a pixel is when I'm zoomed in. I can tell how many are there in the specific section just by looking at the image. I've been doing pixel art for quite a long time now, at least a few years. I'm also perfectly fine with the colour dropper, so I really don't need to download another program when the one I have does the trick quite perfectly.

For Kyouya (his english name escapes me atm >.<), here's what I've done.

Image I don't know whether I should keep the eyebrows lol. So I posted both, and I await input. :keiko: I don't know, I think they make Kyouya look more friendly. But then for some reason now I like the one without them a lot. I also made his eyes bluer, because it makes them stand out a little more and it looks cuter :minuki:

For Kristoph, Image I thought his face looked a little fat so I made the base a little thinner. I also added that 'bump' in the drill from where it hangs off his head, and made the shading/lines a little better. I still like the lighter glasses. Like I said, anything darker would make it look like Krissi was wearing regular glasses. I tried. It just didn't work. And as the artist, I do believe I have input in this kind of thing :edgy:

EDIT: I'm not sure if you could tell, but when I was doing the original hair for the both of them, I made Klavier's hair first. I created him. Then I pasted his hair on another smiley base, edited it and the rest of the base to reflect Kristoph, and voila. Lol, stupid move on my part. Of course, usually when I work on these things, I'm like half zonked out and falling asleep in the computer chair haha.

Lol, I'm kinda glad you guys were so harsh with it. It really helped me improve. At first I was a little pissed but it actually helped and I got over that quickly.

In my opinion, they don't resemble Kristoph and Klavier very well... That Klavier smiley reminds me very much of a golden retriever puppy and the Kristoph one looks like he's crying because of the blue in the glasses. (It lookd almost like tears.) Some of the lines in it look very misplaced, and the hair is most definately off on both the sprites. I believe I made that apparent in my first post. I honestly never liked the smilies of their regular pose. I also think the current Klavier one should be classified as a spoiler. The short hair Klavier sprites on CR are in the spoilers section, and on the current smiley, there's nothing resembling the drill hair at all. You can barely tell. :yuusaku:

EDIT: Added the quoted portion for easier reference. :will:

They were good and had a nice style. It's just that you were the only person who had a problem with the original versions in the first place, so the work was not really required to begin with. :/

Don't complain much. If you wish to contribute, look for a gap in the smily bank and make that. People will jump all over it.

What about reversing the timing? Making the open fingers part of the snap longer and the closed part shorter, I mean. I think that would be closer to the game sprite.
