Since it obviously takes only two days for a new subforum to be created after it is first suggested, I would like to make a suggestion. I have noticed that many Forums have a serious discussion section, and I think that the CR forums could do with one. That way, forum members can get to know each other better, and have a good old-fashioned debate, which is always good fun. I like discussing current events, politics and the like, and I'm sure that other people equally enjoy it. I don't know what you can call it, but I'm sure other people have suggestions.

There was a debate subforum for a while, but it had to be closed due to constant flame wars (and for the simple fact that debates rarely get anywhere). People have asked for it to return a few times before, but to no avail, so I wouldn't expect it to return anytime soon.

Like Nose said we did have a debate forum long ago, and even though the forum was much smaller then than it is now, even with pretty strict moderation it was always a problem area. You're welcome to bring up current events in Wright & Co but in general this forum isn't the proper venue for serious debate on important social issues.

The 'Cough-Up Station', was it?
I've read of it, but never got to be a part of it. Too bad.

But I agree, debate forums usually lead to flame wars. Specially in a 10.000-member forum, I guess.

It happens to even the best of debates. *Knows from experience*

So, yeah, just...discuss it in Wright and Co. I guess...

Yeah... I've been online too long (over 15 years) to think that letting people discuss serious stuff at times isn't an open invitation for it to rapidly get out of hand. People just can't control themselves at times and be civil...

I used to be a mod for a forum with a debate section, and in my experience, another reason why I think it's not worth it is that it makes people think the normal section is the spam section...

There is a very good serious debate section on the Zelda Universe Forums that, as far as I can see, doesn't have many problems with discussions getting out of hand. As soon as a discussion gets a too rabid, it gets locked. I think that something like that could work in the CR forums.

Um...I think we already tried doing that, but with so many members...I'm sure the moderators and admins figured they had to lock so many debates, why bother even having a section for them?

Not that I don't like the idea of having serious debate/discussion. To be honest, I'm excited by it, but I just don't see it happening here again. D:

I'm probably just being pessimistic...

Here's what you can do.
Make a topic on the wright & Co. sub forum, and just specify in the first post that you wish it to be a serious discussion.
Should it get out of hand, just report those post.

Why make another subforum when that one will do fine, albeit with a firm first post.

But then again, this is just my personal oppinion.

I think you guys are being a little too nice on what the forum was like

It wasn't problems with staff, or people getting out of hand

It was just

pure, unfiltered idiocy running rampant corner to corner

Roz was the sole member of the forum who was holding it together by actually going out of her way to make topics that could be discussed and with her gone, it just collapsed. Then there was about a year of that until everyone had enough and they fucking killed it. Image

This is really a great idea and the best way to approach it. I haven't seen many people try to make serious discussions though. Maybe they just don't realize you can. Probably for the best.

But the BBC (I mean Borscht Bowl Club, just realized it had the same initials than the Berry Big Circus) was a new and useful suggestion. Most forums have a musical forum, so Holly Hell wondered "why don't we have one?", asked for it, Croik & Co. deliberated, and decided it wouldn't be a problem.

But a serious discussion subforum has it disadvantages, as it was pointed out in this thread. Apparently (I can't speak for myself), the experience C-R had with its serious discussion wasn't good, at all. That, and the Wright and Co. Law Offices could work perfectly with Ceres' method. So there's no need for a new subforum.
At max, there could be a "Serious Discussion" subforum inside the Wright & Co. I said nothing.

And most users responded "we already had one and it ended in failure, even when we were much members than now."

Also, "you can use an already existing subforum, so there is no need for a new one"

Just throwing ideas about, but perhaps an improved description for Wright & Co is in order?

Perhaps the perceived failure surrounding the Wright and Co Board is the "Chatterbox for non PW talk" slogan. The board most assuredly is that, a chatterbox.

Yeah, I've never been entirely sure what to talk about there. Also, can you please confirm whether serious discussions can happen there or not.

It's more accurate to say they don't happen there. Not because they're forbidden, but more so because everyone likes creating opinion polls and other non-conversation discussions. I'd visit that board more if there was something I cared about being talked about there.

Would a thread for members of a political party to discuss about the party be too serious?

what's a flame war?

and debates can go good. i had debates at my high school that went perfectly well.

Quote:
People just can't control themselves at times and be civil...
people can be civil during debates. i know out of first hand. at my dutch class i learned how to debate and what era good and bad arguments. i think you're generalizing(i don't know if it's an word in the english language) when you said that.some/certain people can be civil. i know people who can be civil during debates.

Also, in your debates class, there's probably someone to watch over you, like a lecturer or teacher or something. And everyone knows how everyone looks like in real life, so you can't do any funny business.

On the internet, however, people are shielded by a veil of anonymity, and you can be anyone whom you choose to be, it doesn't matter if your reputation is ruined, hence allowing people to go all out and start shouting and doing whatever they want, especially since moderators and admins don't have the time to be looking over a forum 24/7.

So ya, real life =/= internet.

Actually our last demographic poll said that most of our users are teenaged guys between 15 and 18. So not older than high school students.

Last time I checked our youngest member was 11 and our oldest was in his 30s... Hmm, maybe it's time for another demo poll...

I don't think age matters in this case. Johnny Rotan is in his thirties and I believe that's all I need to say.
