I was talking to Croik about the possibility of an iPhone app for the main site, and she told me to make a thread asking for people's opinions on said possibility.

The slight issue is that there is a high probability that you will need a Jailbroken iphone/iPod touch to be able to use said app.

The other possibility is of creating an i.court-records.net, that is completely optomized for the iphone.

Opinions, anyone?

The reason of jailbreaking is so that:
Developer's lisences cost 100$ (I'm flat out broke at the time being :sadshoe: )\
And, my mac is acting really weird, so I would need to use windows to make the app. And apple doesn't have a program for windows users

Well, EDIT.
There's a theme for Court-Records designed specifically for the iPhone now! Comment on it, and ect!

Well, what kind of things would the app offer?

If there is enough awesome potential, I'd be glad to donate money towards the developers fund. I bet others would too.

That still leaves the mac problem, but requiring jailbroked iPhones really cuts down the potential user base.

Yeah >_<
i might be able to develop it on a hackentosh, but I'm not sure how hackentoshes work...
The potential features would be:

download updates from the site,
watch trailers
potential forum access
view character profiles
view case descriptions

more features, then this probably ^_^

You've got my attention. Though, you should first ask yourself if we're offering an application or a web interface. If it's a web interface we can just cut the costs and develop an iPhone based theme for the website. Then the user's can just save the bookmark to the springboard dock and woo!

But if we're offering an app, we'll want to make it worth their time to download an install. Items like offline character profiles, sound effects, and swag catalog might be interesting.

Also, the developer kit is free. The license to put it in the official app store costs money.

In any case, I'm interested in this project.

Hmm... Offline character profiles was another feature I was thinking about ^_^
there is an html script that you can put on sites to optimize the page for iphones.
Hmm... I'm actually on my ipod right now, so its hard to type in ideas ^_^

If we plan to share the same pages with the rest of the web, I think all we'd need is a specially designed and tagged CSS file. (And tons of ripped graphics!)

I've got the developer kit, but I've only got a most basic knowledge of Cocoa and C++. It would be a fun educational experience to design but I'd have to research designing a native app more to decide if it's in or out of my league yet.

Still, you gotta start from somewhere.

I know that making web apps is easier than offline apps
I'm learning how to make apps myself, actually
But we could do a collaberation project if you would want to work on it
^_^
It would be cool to optimize the forums for iphones

You can take a peek at my profile and swipe my Instant Message accounts. if you want my email try wooster456 at gmail.

And... do you think they'll let you install the developer tools on the library macs? You need administrative access to install it.

The computers at the library for some odd reason always have administrative access :gant:

I'm not entirely sure why, but...
:godot:
Either way, I can still use 'em

Now, all I need to do is install OS X on my PC...

In the forum's case, considering you need an Internet connection to access the content anyway, rather then building our own forum parser we aught to install an iPhone friendly theme and leave it at that with some customization. If your aim was to get this into the app store then including a forum terminal would put the app in the 17+ restriction category. Apple automatically puts apps with webkit interfaces in the adult category because of the content that "could" be loaded. Considering events like valintimes day, with us it wouldn't be an if but when.

It's an excellent project idea, but I think it should remain separate from the app project.

Then again, if we're intent on going through Cydia, it likely wouldn't matter.

If you guys somehow manage to make a Court Records app for the iPhone, I am all freaking for it. :edgy:

I can't really help out with anything besides giving moral support. ^_^;; And hoping that it wouldn't just be for jailbroken iPhones/iTouches. Because I don't really want to haXor my phone. :sadshoe:

The main problem I see with cydia is that less people would use it.
I'm going to try to reverse boot-camp my pc and try to install mac os x on it.
If I can do that, then we can just go through the app store.

That may be the case, but we also got to keep in mind that we'd be distributing copy-written material at some level. We don't own PW, and it's not in public domain. Capcom USA has been understanding with us, but I don't think we have friends in Capcom Mobile USA.

If we're going through the App store, then I'd rule off using anything extracted from the games. So no sprites, no sound clips. Promotion art should be okay, along with press-kit screen shots however. Anything we make ourselves based upon the franchise is free game. But plagiarizing I do not believe would win us anything.

Eh... I completely forgot about Capcom lol
I guess it could be optimized for fanworks... you could read fanfics, hear remixes, fanmade sprites ect.
And if we somehow got Capcom's permission, then we could post sprites.
A kind of illegitimate way would be to release a copyright-free app, then release an "update" on Cydia that merged with the original app and added the extra features.
I recall seeing that when my iPod was still jailbroken.
There was a "Jokes" app or something like that and on Cydia there were extra jokes that could be added to the original "Jokes" app.

Eh. Valentines day was... Interesting to say the least.
There is actually an app on the store called "forums"
its very poor, but it allows the reading of online forums.
I hooked it up to C-R and got the last, say... 7 or so posts...
*EDIT*
I tried the app and got the last 20 updated forums.

I'm happy to see all the enthusiasm that people are feeling for this project :D
It ought to work out pretty well.
I've almost installed Mac OS X on my PC, so all I need to do is:
1. Get a hold of the developer kit
2. Find out where the $100 dollars is going to come from :sadshoe:
3. Make the app :D

I'm not sure how the app will work with updates... I suppose that:
1. Find the updates on the app store by just logging on to it
2. We could make an announcement on the main page talking about the app, and subsequently post information when it comes time to update (post the new features, ect)

The issue I see is giving the app an online system for updates, and offline for plain information.
because when say, GS5 comes out, there'll be a whole lot of updates :)

I just realized that each person that enrolls has to pay 100$
eh...
Is there a way to download the kit without signing up for the developer program?

And I presume the app isn't going to cost anything
:)
Also, with sprites being blacklisted, does that mean that character profiles is going to cause problems?

An app that kind of looked similar to a design theme that could be good was ironicly capcom's mobile app.
It had listings of all of it's developing games, with updates from the site.

It doesn't have an offline mode, however.

Stuff like character profiles and case descriptions ought to be fine, since they're commentary on the game's comment, and totally fall under Fair Use.

When you get your OS DVD. There's an additional folder on the disk called 'Optional Installs' You'll find the Dev kit installer in there.

Additionally, you can join the Apple Developer Connection for free. (As a Student, You also have an opportunity for a one time developer hardware discount, useable at your own discretion). It's just joining the app distributors that cost money.

Who are we going to release the app under as developers?
Like the company that wrote it?
And what should we name the app?

I'm just trying to come up with the creative parts while I can't access a mac.

We haven't yet established that money is needed. Developing and testing is free. That should keep us occupied for a good long time. We can focus on distribution after we have something to distribute.

Been trying to brush up on my Objective-C. Currently I highly recommend 'Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X'. As a starting point. I really love how the author assumes you have some basic understanding of programming but doesn't assume too much. A very rare combination in programming books.

As for iPhone specific programming, I've yet to go to my local book store, but I am looking at these iTunesU Video lessons. They seem as good a start as any, and considering they're free, I can't complain yet, in spite of my still downloading the first lesson, and consequently not viewing the content yet.

I found this useful website http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/08 ... plication/
It made me rethink my original plans for working on the app.
I guess coming up with what we want the app to look like would be the first step.

That's a nice resource. When I get to a higher level with iPhone programming I'll give that resource a solid look at.

I completed the first lesson on iTunes U. The only 'important' caveat is that the free SDK allows access to the iPhone simulator, but not demoing the app on your personal iPhone. Considering I do not foresee us doing anything more complicated then 1 finger gestures and 'maybe' changing the angle 90 degrees. This shouldn't stop us.

Yeah, I love how the lessons are over an hour long, yet they take up less memory than a half hour movie.
I need to clean out the needless items on my ipod to be able to download the whole curriculum.
By rotating 90*, do you mean like a horizontal mode?
