Okay! Capcom have got onto the wiki bandwagon and created a wiki for each of their franchises. Of course, Ace Attorney has got one too!

That was... unexpected. xD Anyway, over the coming weeks, I will be adding the basic pages such as the games, the characters and some of the merchandise. I believe that if I do this, then people are more likely to contribute. I don't want to feel like I'm betraying Court Records, though. :-P

EDIT: Yes, that is me. And if Harvey Birdman isn't a spin-off, then what is it?

I know there are a few official spin offs... there's a Poker game, and... I can't remember.

I honestly don't know what to say about this. Wikia already has a fairly large "Mega Man Knowledge Base" (>2000 articles), an Ace Attorney Wiki (>200 articles) and even a general Capcom Database Wiki. I've also seen some Ace Attorney on Scratchpad Wiki with attempts at communication with the Ace Attorney Wiki going nowhere. I have no idea how official wikis fare in general, but the aforementioned wikis all have severe contribution problems already, which is telling.

Well, a spin-off is usually a game or series that takes place within the same universe or continuity as the original series it's spun off of. For example, AAI is a spin-off of the original series because it takes place within the same continuity, but focuses on different characters and changes the gameplay.

The Harvey Birdman game, on the other hand, would be more of an "influenced" game than a direct spin-off, since it uses the basic gameplay but none of the characters or situations from the AA games and obviously isn't based in the same continuity.

Well, I'd consider AAI a "sub-series" of the Ace Attorney franchise.

I suppose it is an "influenced" game, but I believe it is actually more than that. I think there is too much in common. I believe I read somewhere that Capcom made the Harvey Birdman game because fans saw the connection between the cartoon and the games? And while there are no Ace Attorney characters, there are Street Fighter characters... I still don't know where that places the game, though...

The Friends spinoff Joey featured one of the Friends, Joey, as the star.

The Cheers spinoff Frasier featured one of the Cheers cast members, Dr. Frasier, as the star.

The Simpsons Spinoff Showcase featured spinoffs that, while they weren't real, all featured characters from The Simpsons as main characters.

I'm pretty sure the idea of a spinoff is to have a different take on the same universe.

From what I can recall, the term "subseries" is used to classify parts of a metaseries. For example, Mega Man X is a subseries, while Mega Man Battle Network is a spinoff. So I suppose AAI could be considered either a subseries or a spinoff if it indeed became a series. Harvey Birdman, however, is neither.
