Just uncovered an Incredibly interesting video about the making of Last Window. It's in Japanese, but it really shows off how CiNG uses a lot of cool techniques to bring the characters from life, to our Dual Screens.

Check it out, if you're an artist, you may even learn a thing or two!

Yeah, to think that each character was based off of a real-life one! I guess that's why the animations and emotions look so realistic...

Dammit, now I want to meet real-life Hyde!

And that is DEFINITELY Photoshop and Imageready. Nice to know these amazing people live on the, uh, same planet as us, so to speak...

That's a semi-ancient technique called rotoscoping. It used to be really hard to make, but now, with a tablet PC and a layer-enabled image-editing software, it can be done by anyone. In my opinion, it's an amazing technique.

Great find, and really interesting!

Ah yes, rotoscoping. Had I the technology (read: A tablet of some form) I would attempt to dabble in some HD-esque renditions of myself and probably other things.

And to think; with Photoshop and tablets and what have you, rotoscoping is still a fairly arduous process, frame after frame making the tiniest bit of difference in the pen strokes. Now, remember Take On Me? The music video, made in 1985 is the inspiration for HD and LW's graphics...1985. Yonks before Photoshop and such. Each frame was hand-drawn...and that's a lotta frames.

Sweet. Patrice and Dylan in particular look very similar to their real-life models. Rotoscoping is a really interesting technique that I haven't seen used that much before, so I still thank Cing for putting it to great use in film-noir style on the ds.

But I wonder who models Hyde? I want to see him.

Extremely interesting.
Now that I've seen how they do it, rotoscoping seems quite fun to do!
Another interesting point is that the sprites are made up of 3 parts - the basic shading, the shadows and the outlines.

It's quite good! The shadows are great. The only problem are the random white spots in the head, but otherwise very good.

(Vanity mode: Any chance of any acknowledgement that I made it? *shot*)

I'm glad to see the positive responses it got! It took a bit o' time to make...but ultimately satisfying!

I had to..."cheat". Unlike the guys in the video, I didn't have some wacky tablet-mabob to physically draw over Edgey's outline. I had to desaturate him, mess about with the levels to retain his outlines but ultimately remove any other shadows, then manually put in the shadows where I think they would fit the style and the sketch lines. I then had to select the finished Edgey, modify the selection to expand it a few pixels, create a white "outline" layer to make it look like Edgey was drawn on some paper, then snipped bits off the outline so it wasn't a perfect outline.

Oh, and the court background was easy. Prosecutor Bench > Blur Filter.

I wonder If this would work really well on Apple's new tablet computer. It could be like a portable sketchbook. Yes, I realize that's redundant.

Oh man, if it did, that'd be all the excuse I'd need to go and buy one. I already have a soft spot for Apple products. But there's nothing so far I've heard on the Apple Tablet that's 'sold' me. If there's a decent Photoshop extension for it or comparable art program, I'll fork over all the money I don't have to buy one.

And of course, the credit will be yours, Olrik.

Wow, I didn't know this was how the characters were made. It's a pretty interesting idea, adds more realism to the characters.

Yeah, I found it difficult to judge where to shade Phoenix. I'll mess about with a few versions, perhaps try a different pose and lighten the shadow's colour a bit.

Once again, that is definitely an awesome Phoenix drawing. The side of his face could be improved in terms of shading but overall, it's awesome. Well done! Try Franziska next.

That is an absolutely fascinating method of creating character looks for a video game. Imagine being a model for it, and then seeing yourself as a character!

It would indeed be awesome, silhouette.

And I don't know why, but I have the strangest urge to render Ms. Von Karma in this style...she probably has a stern Iris-like pose which I can...exploit.

The shadow-lines... perfect. The coloring and shading are great, too. It's excellent, IMHO.

Well, maybe if LW gets announced for NA/EU, we can replace the Layton banner with a Dusk-style banner.

Huh, interesting to see that they're actually people, unlike PW's characters which are made-up and designed. Thanks for sharing!

Actually, I may be wrong, but I seem to recall, particularly for GS4, in some magazine article that they used real people for some things. For what I cannot remember, just recalling that much is murky.

It's gonna be too rigid if I used official art, so I opted for a prototype sketch instead.
Urk, I'm supposed to be studying for a major exam in IT tomorrow, but this is just too fun to resist. I must say I've been shading like this for years and I've never realized my technique was used in such an awesome game.
Hope you guys like it. :grey:

She does look very Iris-like. I'm quite pleased with how she turned out, especially the shading. Obviously, the computer did most of the work for me. I can't draw people, but I can draw a damn good Eiffel Tower.
