Dual Destinies just had its Japanese demo released on the Nintendo eShop, so if you have a Japanese 3DS, go and grab it!

Interestingly, the page notes that the game is not planned to be available through the eShop in Japan. Plans could change before release, but right now it looks like the game'll be physical-only in Japan.

Huh. That's strange. Physical only in Japan and digital only (currently) in NA. Weird.

I wonder how the digital market in Japan is faring. If it's worse over there than in the US (in terms of acceptance), that's a bit concerning.

Played through the demo. The actual gameplay's the same as the web demo (though a bit flashier with camera angles and the like), but there was the animated intro for case one included, as well as a variation of the web demo's trailer at the end.

Spoiler: Not really spoilers if you've been following news
In the intro, we see a scene of the courtroom in the lead-up to the explosion, though it only shows the gallery and judge, not the defense or prosecution. After a shot of Apollo standing in the rubble, it plays the scene (from way back at TGS) of Phoenix talking on the phone interspersed with shots of Athena. Then it cuts back to Apollo in the rubble, and he clenches a fist and looks up to the sky (and the camera does a weird zoom-in on his eye showing the moon being reflected in it. Wat.)

The trailer at the end is 99% the same as the web version's, but there's very brief shots of Pearl and Klavier included in the montage at the end.

There's almost no reason for it not to be on the eShop unless Nintendo charges up the arse for your game to be on there.

I agree that its a bit weird that the Japanese version is skipping the eshop entirely.

Just gave it a whirl, and wow, it's awesome! The cutscene, the 3D, the super loud "IGIARI!" "MATTA!" "KURAE!" and "KOKODA!" and the clear funky soundtrack, also of bass going on there, especially in the pursuit theme.

Also, you've gotta love the 3DS icon-hover-top screen animation thing. :pearl:

EDIT: Hmm, i'm pretty sure i saw something that said it would be in the eShop... maybe in the Nintendo Direct? Or maybe i'm imagining things again...

Then again, when i downloaded the demo, there wasn't really any information there, no screenshots or description, so it's still early days.

Someone also uploaded the intro on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TakGbQAAf5o

I still wonder why the intro track is so long? Even in the 3 minutes long anime sequence it only plays for a few seconds..

The series is still strong in Japan, if I'm not mistaken, so I see no reason for them to not release a digital version there.
BUT if we look on the other side... perhaps Capcom is trying to reduce costs in Japan to save some $$ for the possible american retail release?

It's quite possible it will be used in the full version of the trial, like when new information is discovered, and there is a form of flashback.

Just DL-ed it and played it. Gameplay was almost the exact same as the web demo, but the animations. Fell in love with it. :redd:

Spoiler:
And the 3D icon/figure thing on the 3DS home screen. Chibi Phoenix chilling on couch in the Law Office and Apollo & Athena standing together in court. CUTEST THING EVER. :edgy:

Check out my SoundCloud for Ace Attorney Transcriptions. And even AA style remixes of Nintendo music. .... Yeah, so basically a lot of Ace Attorney stuff.

Played through it. My thoughts:
story:
- I really liked hobo Naruhodo, some I'm having trouble warming to the way he's all cleaned up (and nervous/unconfident again).
gameplay:
+ the new kokoro-scope looks like it has potential
features:
+ the fact that you can look back at a dialogue log at any time is useful.
- I would have liked some furigana support
visuals:
- as with LKvsGS, there is too much symmetry in the characters' faces
- the black outlines look ugly
- the background characters in the courtroom are lazy cut & pastes (the same characters, and head swaps of them appear multiple times)
- don't like the redesign of Naruhodo
+ the character animation is good
+ the 3D is good
Sound:
+++ They replaced Naruhodo's voice actor

Overall:
It doesn't look as pretty or as polished as LKvsGS. But I guess it's the story and gameplay that count...

*sigh* I hoped they'd add something like that now that the game has some (more) voice acting added into it, but they didn't, huh? Too bad, I mean that would really be helpful.

Didn't they have furigana support in PLvsAA? Kind of lame for this game not to have it then, especially since it's a part of the main series and everything.

Thing is, furigana was standard in the PL games (presumably in part since they're aimed at an all-ages audience), so I'm guessing the push for that came from Level-5. Still would've been nice to have in DD, though.

Also maybe it's just the demo, but the cutscenes don't seem to have subtitles on the lower screen (or at all).

Wow! It looks amazing! I'm so pleased there are cutscenes now! I wonder whether there will be many cutscenes throughout the cases, or perhaps just at the beginning and end of cases?

Pretty much everything about this game seems awesome! I want it to play already! XD

Who cares about furigana in the freaking PLvsGS? :sadshoe:
Especially since that thing is not pure-GS and was done by somebody entirely different.

I think what Giegue meant was that GS5 took a lot of other features from the PlvsAA game, so why didn't they add furigana as well? GS didn't have it previously since it started on the Game Boy's limited screen space, but Layton has always had furigana and now that the 3ds obviously had furigana in PLvsAA it should be in GS5 as well.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

I see... but that's bad, anyway. AJ and GK1+2 were made on the DS and they also did not have furigana added, which makes it a bit difficult to play GK2 at times. So if the 3DS can handle furigana required space, so did the DS but why did they not put it in for AJ and beyond?
No idea. I'm not mention the GS1-3 because, as you said, those started on the Gameboy and were merely ported to the DS.

I have so much love for this game. Let's see what I can pick out from this intro alone...

Spoiler:
- Bones does it again! I could watch this intro again and again without tiring.
- Most of the lines in the trailer came from this intro. I believe it's this one that was shown at TGS last year.
- The courthouse design matches that in the live action movie. I wonder if there really are giant machine hologram displays of the Court Record in the courtroom. That would be amazing to see.
- Interesting that Barashima was the one who evacuated the courtroom. It really lends a hand to my theory that he was using the bombing as a distraction from the murder.
- Apollo looks at the moon. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN.
- Trucy's 'Child of Magic' theme has a new rendition that is elegance.
- Poor Kokone is clumsier than I gave her credit for. It disappointed me that I didn't see her fall, but that would be cruel to show anyway.
- That perky music during Kokone's scenes might be her theme song. It really reminds me of a magical girl anime theme.
- I can't think of anything that could be added to Nick's reintroduction scene that would improve it. It's so simple, yet so moving.

Honestly, I'm more used to the GS style of text than the LK style. Adding in the furigana is helpful, but the text boxes sometimes look a bit crowded. It's like when I'm reading manga; I would prefer furigana to be absent unless there's a special pronunciation to a certain term. Of course, in a video game, they don't have to account for page space, but it feels cleaner this way.

I didn't find the character models or art style in any way detracting from game play. Is it just me?

Furigana would've been nice... but the Gyakuten series has never had furigana, so even if PLvAA had it, I don't think it's worth making a big fuss over it.

If the cutscenes in the main game don't have subtitles though... >_>

I heard somewhere that furigana are usually used to indicate uncommon readings or to help kids learn how to read. Maybe GS is just targeted at an older audience that shouldn't need the furigana...? :yuusaku: It would make sense, considering every case is a murder, but then again, Detective Conan is popular enough with kids that the Japanese government used it to promote crime awareness, and I'm pretty sure it gets more graphic with murders than GS.

Hm. Maybe it's just a style/tradition thing.
So I finally grew a brain and remembered to give myself a signature... Whoopee.

I think manga tends to include furigana more generally than video games. Plus Detective Conan is published in Weekly Shonen Sunday.

In addition to the limited screen space on the GBA, I do think the reason that GS doesn't have furigana is the target audience.

Is that so?

Spoiler:
I'm going to assume that since Kakuru's murder will warrant an investigation so not counting the AAI series, this may be the first "tutorial" case to have a investigation phase. And I'm wondering if there were any witnesses to the murder and what Tonate's motive to murder her.

I gotta admit, the animated intro is really nice. And are you saying that Tonate murdered Kakuru after the bombing occurred or during the phase where everyone runs away from the courtroom? Since it was awfully convenient that we never see Tonate escape the courtroom before everybody else.

And speaking of victims, has there been a name given to the victim of Case 2 that Yumemi's father (what is his name anyway?) supposedly killed?

Spoiler:
It'd be interesting to see if this is the first time a Case 1 has to be extended another day. Still, based on the investigation phase example given in the trailers, I'd say it's more likely that Case 2 is where there's actually an investigation needed. I would hope Case 1 isn't too simple, anyway.

I was thinking along the lines of the murder happening before Tonate considered using the explosion to clear the courtroom of potential witnesses. He could have stayed around to rearrange the scene, even. A courtroom explosion could delay investigations for a good while... but apparently Payne didn't give this case that much of a run-through anyway.

Yumemi's father, the mayor of Tenma City, is probably called Deemon (deh-mon) Tenma. I'm not sure, but his first name may come from the phrase 骨皮筋右衛門, "reduced to skin and bones". Looking at the guy, he does seem rather frail. And it could also be a creative pronunciation of the word "demon", to follow the Tenma theme. The victim is the Kyuubi Village chief; his name hasn't been revealed yet.

Poor Juniper; to be the first character to get falsely charged twice in the same game.
Spoiler:
Adding injury to insult, she also loses her precious Rhiny plushie.
Her luck is matching up with Maggey's... or maybe just with Maya's.
