舞台という設定を生かしてくれる脚本みたいだね。意外と愉しそう。

The short version of the Japanese above:

Gyakuten Saiban - Turnabout Spotlight
Jul. 31 ~ Aug. 4 (stage play)

Kenzaki Kentarou - Phoenix Wright
Ogino Karin - Maya Fey
Mori Akihiro - Larry Butz
Isogai Ryuuko - Dick Gumshoe
Sugihara Isamu - Will Powers
Wada Takuma - Miles Edgeworth

Nick & Maya are attending a stage show of the Steel Samurai. Larry, Edgeworth and Gumshoe are also present in the audience. During the play, a great lantern falls from above the stage; setting things on fire. Suspect: Will Powers. Can Nick save his old client again? Was it an accident or foul play? There's at least not shortage of witnesses, because all of the audience were there!

Ooh a theatre performance?

Will Powers sure looks sinister on the cover.

Man, Japan gets all the cool stuff. They get stage productions for video games like Persona, Steins;Gate, Phoenix Wright; and a whole bunch of other unmarketable games that barely get localized in the West. They even have a ballet adaption for Dragon Quest! :meekins:

If we can BARELY get Dual Destinies localized, there's practically ZERO chance that this play will ever come out of Japan. Sorry, but it's more of a culture thing than anything else. Japan is known for doing stage productions and musicals for a lot of their games, and most of those games have only a niche popularity in the West.

I've heard that the Japanese people like foreigners, but not foreigners living in their country. If you ever decide to live there, make sure you gain a good understanding of the language and culture. Don't be a weeaboo. :hotti:

This is a great article if you're interested about common misconceptions about Japan.

Thanks, it was a good read. Kinda depressing though that most people in Japan perceive anime as kid's stuff. I think there's probably a greater respect for animation in America than in Japan.

What really scared me though was how long it takes to learn the language itself. I'm currently memorizing hiragana, but it apparently takes roughly 2,200 hours to be considered proficient in Japanese. Personally, I only want to be fluent in reading kana and kanji so I can understand Japanese games; so it probably won't take me nearly as long.

Do you mean that it takes 2,200 straight or in a period of time to learn just hiragana? and to be fluent in reading kana and kanji you need to know Hiragana and Katakana

No, I mean that it takes 2,200 hours to be fluent in EVERYTHING. Memorizing all of the kana should take perhaps a month or so depending on your schedule and work ethic. Kanji, however, takes a lot of time and practice. I haven't looked in to any learning methods on kanji yet, though.

oh okie i see that makes sense and the only learning method to kanji is just being fluent in understanding Hiragana and Katakana

That's true, but I do I go about memorizing all those kanji? There's literally thousands of them out there.

With kana, I'm able to retain the symbols very easily. It's the vocabulary that really stumps me. I could have learned all the kana quicker if I skipped over the vocabulary, but I didn't do that. After five hiragana or so, I go back and try to memorize all the vocabulary. That for me is very difficult. And I haven't even done ANYTHING on Japanese grammar yet.

hmm have you tried taking a course for it that way you have a professional who can teach you the easiest ways to memorize all of it?

Aren't there like 50,000 Kanji in existence or something? (I know there are so many that I don't think even the majority of native Japanese speakers know them all. I could be wrong, though.)

I started taking Japanese lessons in April and have only just started to learn Kanji. I expect it'll take months for me to know enough to play video games, though. But Kanji has a lot of complicated readings and combinations. I know very few so far (I also hear that the AA series has a lot of complicated Kanji - probably because of law terms and such).

Someone correct me if I'm wrong?

There aren't any courses like that where I live. My school used to teach Japanese, but almost no one took it; so the course doesn't exist anymore. I can only learn written Japanese by myself. There are no other options for me.

While it's true that over 50,000 kanji do exist, a majority of them aren't use in normal conversation or writing. Think about it. Do YOU know every English word that's ever existed? Of course not. The average Japanese person probably learns new words just like us English-speakers do from time to time.

The Japanese Ministry of Education has stated that there are 1,945 "official" kanji and these are the ones taught in all schools and commonly used by citizens.

You're right when you say Gyakuten Saiban's difficult. I can imagine a lot of the kanji being uncommon, and a lot of them don't have the furigana aid. My first Japanese-only game is going to be Ni no Kuni for the DS most likely. It's a very high quality game that's written entirely in kana. The dialogue isn't that hard because this is a game primarily aimed at Japanese children, meaning the game difficulty isn't that bad either. Still, it has the high standards of Studio Ghibli and it comes with an amazing hardcover spellbook.

Yeah, I know. And that was BEFORE I was even interested in Japan.

That's funny, because I've heard the exact opposite. Many people just claim that's it's merely expensive software that's a total waste. Personally, I believe you can learn a lot more just by using free apps and other material. Plus, Rosetta Stone isn't going to help me that much since it primarily deals with speaking rather than writing.

I doubt it. Those were middle and high school classes and I was in elementary school at the time.

I don't plan on living in the country either. I love the culture, but there's no way I'd ever fit in there. Japan is one of the most homogeneous places in the world, so I'd instantly be outed as a foreigner. I wouldn't have the same rights, and really; it's just too damn expensive to live there anyways.

Learning written Japanese is supposed to be more of a side hobby of mine. I just want to play Japanese games that were never released here. I know that sounds kind of pathetic, but video games do mean a lot to me after all. :keiko:

I can understand that. I've been studying Japanese on my own without any official courses for about oh, 2 1/2 years. Of course, I haven't been studying it fervently until around last year, but it's been a slow process with lots of memorization. I suppose having a basis in Chinese allows me to better utilize a kanji dictionary, but now I'm dragging on those studies...

In any case, I suggest starting on learning the grammar before attempting the kanji. There's no particular way to learn kanji other than gradually memorizing them. Just watch out for those odd exceptions that pop up rather frequently. However, the grammar is pretty much set aside from a few exceptions, and from there, slang is pretty easy to learn. This is a guide I've used for a while now, and it gives a pretty solid foundation for beginners.

Thanks. I originally started everything with this article, "How to Read Visual Novels in Japanese in 2 Years Time," and that was one of the guides they recommended.
http://visualnovelaer.fuwanovel.org/201 ... -or-anime/

I better just memorize all of the kana first, though.

Hahahahaha true. I especially imagine dialogue from someone like Edgeworth being quite difficult, though.

What I am using to help me, however, is the rikaikun app? The one which gives you readings for the different kana on certain sites with Japanese written in them. It's very useful for me, anyway.

Or getting to the bank on time, wearing really warm clothes in the winter, disguising yourself so you don't look TOO foreign, and hiding your anime and video games collection.

Ah yeah, Japan is a pretty homogenous society and even if you do make friends there and have a great time, you're apparently not ever going to truly belong there. I'm certainly not going there unless a) I know a decent amount of Japanese and b) I have a guaranteed job there first. It's certainly a country you need to be prepared for unless you're only going there for a holiday.

Look at Donald Keene. He's American and a permanent citizen of Japan.
