It's now May 30th, and the Ace Attorney Trilogy HD has been released!

You can grab it now at Apple's store.

Time to get objecting!

Just downloaded it and had a look through the files using iFunBox. It seems like the music for everything past the first game is still in super low quality from the Game Boy Advance versions. It was like that in the Japanese release, but I was hoping they might fix it in the English version, using the higher quality music from the Gyakuten Saiban Sound Box that was released last year.

For perspective, basically what this means is that after you finish Rise from the Ashes and listen to the jazzy, dulcet tones of its credits theme, when you choose to purchase and start Justice for All, your ears will have to sit through this drop in quality. (The DS/Wii version, for comparison.) This is mixed in with DS-quality music that's reused in JfA (like Search-Core 2001), making for an odd and annoying sound quality dissonance.

Another comparison, this time from Trials and Tribulations: Objection! 2004 as it sounds on the DS/Wii, and as it sounds on the GBA, and in this HD version.

It's kind of disappointing, really. I know it may seem nitpicky, but I really think the pretty HD visuals just aren't well suited to being accompanied by muddy-sounding low-quality GBA music.
:meekins: I think I'll go down to the courthouse and file a complaint with Ruffles Man! ... er. rather, at least, I'll complain to someone at Capcom probably. I doubt anything will be done about it.

Ah, I just remembered. I can't check right now, but I think the game-specific sound effects for the second and third games are also GBA-quality. They were in the initial Japanese release. Though, of course, that doesn't have much of an effect.

Oh wow, that's extremely disappointing. I didn't know about that until you said it. What were they thinking? It doesn't make any sense.

I'm actually totally new to iOS games, but...would it be possible to mod the game? Would love to go beyond upgrading the songs to DS and insert an entirely new soundtrack; a modern, remixed soundtrack would suit an "HD" replay way more than the DS (and especially in this case GBA) soundtrack.

Well, with a jailbroken device, you can do whatever you want with the files in the game. In this case, the sound and music is in M4A format, so you could literally just drop a song from iTunes in there and it would play. Of course, it wouldn't actually work right, because the songs in the game are cut into intro and loop segments. Like, Objection! 2001 has the opening part as one file, and the part where the percussion kicks in as another part, which is the part that loops.

Armed with that knowledge, you could totally grab, say, the Gyakuten Saiban Sound Box OST off some site (or, more legally, off of a music site like... Play-Asia I guess? it'd definitely be an import), convert the tracks into M4A, then use a tool like Audacity to clip the intro and loop segments just right and put them into the game. It's a little more complicated than that in practice (it involves getting down to the precise sample on which the song loops in Audacity and things like that), but it's 3 AM and I'm tired. :yogi:

tl;dr: You could relatively easily put together and distribute a pack of "remastered" songs (such as those from the GS Sound Box album) to put into the game yourself (if you own a jailbroken iDevice).

Looks like I need to re-buy the cases in AA1, I knew that'd be the case, I guess I'll keep the old Ace Attorney one, but only buy JFA and T&T.

One thing I've been wondering: are the full games included in the app already and the In-App Purchases just unlock them, or do you have do download them separately after purchasing them? If it's the latter, how big are the downloads? I have quite a slow internet connection and downloading the 300MB-odd app is going to take me long enough already!

I guess they were lazy.

Ideally they should of just updated the game's visuals to match the later games in the series instead of just redrawing the old GBA sprites and backgrounds.

I know this is nitpicking but I wonder if they went over the script and fixed the subtle inconsistencies such as Redd White referring to the chief prosecutor at the time as a male.

I "fixed" the logos. Before, they were inconsistent - each "Ace Attorney" logo a different size with different spacing. I applied the T&T logo to all three games.

Proof that it works:

If you want to make the change yourself, use iFunBox* and edit the @rssub00.png and @rssub01.png files. My iPhone is jailbroken. I don't think you can edit this without a jailbroken iPhone/iPad. You also need to restart your device after making the change.

*I find iFunBox on Windows to be incredibly unresponsive. If anyone knows a similar program that can be used, please tell me.

Here is a proof of concept for a fixed "nametab.png". Right now it has a gradient effect but each character name has a static blue background. So there's a blue rectangle overtop the gradient. I removed the gradient in the text box and just tried to make it the same static blue color. Someone with a graphic design background can make a better tab than this -- it's just a quick attempt.

Image

The Paint.NET file I used for this can be downloaded here if you'd like to make changes. It's embarrassingly messy - 17 unlabeled layers. Think of it as a puzzle.

Here's the icon in action.

Looks like the original GBA / DS font was going to be used, or was used for testing. Note: this image contains character names, which to a very sensitive person could be spoilers.

Spoiler: Character names

Well it's no replacement for the DS versions, but it should still be nice for people who can't get the original games anymore. I also own the original iphone app and was wondering if they are still offering the first one free to those who have it, although the final price is 16.99 which isn't too bad for the trilogy.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

Honestly, this is such a joke. This game has seen so many delays and has been in Japan for over a year and it DOESN'T HAVE IPHONE 5/IPOD TOUCH 5TH GEN SUPPORT!? This looks so ugly letter-boxed on my larger iPod screen. The font and sound isn't even that great either. It looks half-decent when I play the game in landscape, but there seems to be significant lag during the transitions from person to person during the courtroom scenes. Secondly, why can't I get the first game for free if I've already bought the original app!? Didn't they do this for the Japanese users!?

Of course Capcom doesn't care care about any of this. They'll release a half-assed "HD Collection" because they know people are going to buy it anyways. They're rarely update their games, and I wouldn't be surprised if they never fix this. I'm ashamed of you Capcom yet again. :zenitora:

Remember that, even if this is a lazy port, there's a chance Capcom is using this to test the waters for an AAI2 release.

We should still support this release, and get as many people as we can to try it.

Plus, it's pretty good. Yes, it's still got the same old grammar and spelling mistakes (and that weird bit where Maya talks to herself on the phone, in the 1-2 intro). It's a little laggy. The people in the peanut gallery are giant and terrifying. But it's Ace Attorney, and it's something...... Capcom seem to be making more of an effort with their western fans lately, so we should return the favour and prove it's worth their time and money.

IMO. :phoenix:

So they don't let you have the first game in HD for free if you have already bought the app? I thought they said they were going to do that, or was that just speculation by fans?

People seem to be forgetting that it's only cases 1-1 & 1-2 that are free. They're free to let newcomers of the game try out the series.

Capcom isn't giving anything away. The app is free so new gamers can get a taste of the first two cases of Ace Attorney. If they like it, they can buy the rest of of the collection. However, I do recall Capcom saying that buyers of the old PW app would get the HD version of the first game for free. Obviously that isn't the case now. :yuusaku:

I'm actually working on it somewhat right now. It's a pain, though, because Capcom's failure to stick to the proper timing of things happening on screen and text displaying from the DS versions means the music suffers for it. For example, the intro music for Recipe for Turnabout cuts off right as the twist at the end of the intro is revealed, at the height of the song itself (about 34 seconds in that video). I don't really know what I can do about that, since I didn't leave any silence in the beginning or end of the track.
Another example: In the intro for The Lost Turnabout, I had to add 9 seconds(!) of silence to the beginning of the song, or the music would loop around and start playing again, suddenly cutting off when the Judge brings down his gavel on Nick's spiky head.

Of course, we could avoid weird kludgy fixes like this if someone were to work out the case part format and tweak the timings for the text and stuff. We could even fix the weird grammar issues and typos and the like that way. That's definitely not my forte, though, looking in Notepad2, I could see that the evidence/profile text is in plain ASCII, and the actual script of the case seems to be in fullwidth text. As in,(Boy am I nervous!), and so on. There's more to it than that, but like I said, not my forte.

Bought today and played a tiny bit on my ipad. I didn't think it looked bad on the big screen. I mean, it didn't look perfect, but it looked like playing the game with the art book pictures, which is pretty much what I expected.

To the people who are talking about whether or not you get the other cases free if you bought the older version: when I first started the game, it asked if it could look through my previous purchases. I never bought the last game, so it didn't accomplish anything, but I thought it was asking to see if I'd downloaded the original port.

I thought this was the case too. Even though I long removed the first Ace Attorney app from my iPod touch, I still purchased it, and the HD Trilogy app was looking through my purchases. Nothing happened.

Anyway, the sound quality looks to be GBA quality in even the first game, which is kinda annoying. There's also so strange music hiccups and character portraits at certain dialogue that is different from how it was originally seen in the DS games. I noticed this when beating 1-1, Larry has some smug face when talking when he should just have a stern one.

Other thing to nitpick is the slow green text and typing sounds at the beginning of a new time. Other than that, it does look pretty nice and had some effort put into it. I honestly hope it does well for the series.

Well my response to this so far has been nothing but positive, I'm really enjoying it, but then again:

- I never bought the old AA app, so I never expected to get the first game free

- I'm using an old iPad, so I don't have the dodgy border round the edge of the screen

- I haven't got to the later two games yet so I've heard no issue with the audio quality.

I actually really like the art and font, and I'm really enjoying playing through these games again for the umpteenth time. I just wish Capcom would try and give the game a bit more prominence in the app store so that newcomers to the series might try it and enjoy it.

Okay, so when it's looking through your purchases it's not looking for the old version of the game. It's looking to see if you've used your itunes account to buy cases on another device. I downloaded the game onto my phone and when it looked through my purchases it downloaded all the cases because I'd already bought them on my ipad.

My game centre doesn't show the full description of the achievements... It stops after 2 lines of each... I really wanted to see the list of easter eggs they found. :( It's on iPhone 5. Does anyone know how to show the full description of the achievements? Or if there's a full list of achievements someone's made. Thanks.

I have yet to start playing it. I will hopefully start today.

I sadly don't have an iOS device of my own, but I did play through most of case 1-1 on my housemate's iPad. I was annoyed right off the bat because I noticed that a couple sound effects are STILL erroneously swapped like they were in the JP version (as I noticed on YouTube). I'm itching so bad to mod this game and fix it up...but I don't have a device to even test it on (housemate is very protective of his stuff; he stood and watched me the whole time I played and wouldn't let me finish one case).

Even without the ability to play it, I'd gladly help out with fixing up the script's grammar if someone did a proper rip of it. Especially AA2. That game needs so many commas...

I foresee a community fix pack eventually emerging for this. This could actually turn out to be a definitive version of the trilogy once the fanbase polishes it up. :P

Alright so i tookit upon myself to change the music and give a more modern sound to the visual.
It took around 5-6 hours but it was worth it.
I didnt find loops for all the tracks but for most of them.
Basically i took tracks from Cadenza Magical trick society and Turnabout Orchestra and edited and looped them to be in the game. The loops are not perfect but they change the overall feeling of the game, Heres the download link:
http://www.mediafire.com/?v9867335wyx1kvr
To use it in your game, open the AA123HD app (i recommend iFunbox)
then open GS123dx.app (should open as a folder)
then in the archive, copy all the contents of the PWAA1 folder (NOT the folder itself, just the files inside it) to the GS123dx.app folder inside your device.
Enjoy!

People need to stop finding things to complain about the game just enjoy the awesomeness of the HD collection and buy it to support the series so that capcom can see how important it is to us here in US so they could localize the games like AAI2

Haven't read the posts here, but I got the whole thing for the iPad, and no matter what I do to clean my memory, the FPS on everything (from the main menu, to even dialogue scenes) is noticeably slow (we're talking in PC terms at a rate of 15 fps or lower).

This is the slowest app I've ever had to deal with on the iOS store. For a freakin' visual novel game.

The only nice thing about the new art are the cutscenes...everything else just looks meh...It's not a good upscale (I mean the remastered original drawings of everything)...But I'm sure if you have a retina device it looks sharp for sure.

I looked inside the game data files, and some of the sound effects are actually COMPRESSED compared to the GBA version. It's completely off-putting when you can just hear how low-quality some of the sound effects and even the music are in comparison to what you see on screen.

And who picked the fonts for this HD app? It's the most atrocious thing about this app (aside from the fps slowdown).

Seriously, the first PW game that ever came out to the iOS store was and is still the best port to come for iOS. Why couldn't they follow that as a model?

You know it's a bad app if you have posters here already trying to "fix"/mod the inside of the data files :P

Also, when you download the free app, everything is packed in if I remember, the iAP just unlocks the episodes.

Recommendation: Don't buy, unless you just want to support Capcom regarding the AA franchise.

People need to stop finding things to complain about the game just enjoy the awesomeness of the HD collection and buy it to support the series so that capcom can see how important it is to us here in US so they could localize the games like AAI2
I'm of the opinion that while yes, it is good to support Capcom's somewhat-renewed efforts on the Ace Attorney series (I did buy this, and I'll be buying Dual Destinies, no doubt about it), it's also bad to allow a sloppy effort to go uncriticized. If it was just little things, like say if it was just the sound effects that were low quality, or just the script timings that were off, I would probably care a lot less, but we're talking about the actual soundtrack of the games, in a series that has amazing music that is incredibly important for setting the mood. It's like if you went to watch a big budget movie, with a big budget film score, in the IMAX or something, and the speakers made it sound like it was playing through a tin can. You know better can be done, you know better HAS been done, and it's not right that better ISN'T being done.

:yuusaku:...Of course, in the end, it's something we can fix for ourselves, so maybe it doesn't really matter
