The Payne we know of today isn't actual the real Payne: the Rookie Killer. He's in fact a poser who was jealous of the man's winning streak and eventually took over. In fact, we never even knew the actual Payne. This is why he constantly changes hairstyles, because his wigs are so unstable, which is also why it fell out easily with the..."past conflict" so to say. The real Payne was murdered by this poser who eventually took upon his identity, to his dismay, bringing his name down into the ashes of losing.
I'd laugh if this somehow explains things in canon.
