Progress on the final chapter is coming along, but slower than I had hoped. I just strongly prefer writing investigation sections than trials and it's frustrating having to connect all the little plot points. I wrote a bunch this week (multiple scenes worth of dialogue), but it feels like compared to what I have left, it was almost nothing.

At this point, I am strongly leaning towards releasing the first few chapters early. All the other big cases got staged releases, so why the heck not? I do have one specific part that I would finish the first half at. There are two art pieces I'm waiting on, and I would need those ready before I release it to the public. One of the people has told me that they plan to have it ready by this weekend, and based on recent updates that seems believable. However, I haven't heard much from the other recently. As such, I can't say how soon it would be.

Spoiler: major Turnabout Consequences spoilers
If I do this, as previously discussed, to address the multiple endings from T-Con, I would just create an updated intro file that has the player answer which ending they are following.

T-UNKNOWN IS GO!!!

Here it is... The first few chapters of Turnabout into the Unknown!

This is actually a rather huge update. In addition to the first half of the new case, I've made several edits to the older ones (mostly The Rogue Turnabout). If you are interested, the full list is here:
Spoiler:
Art changes:
-Edited one of the courtroom backgrounds so that Maya wouldn't miraculously
show up at the trial for the finale of T-CON
-Upgraded some of the manor backgrounds in T-CON so that they were more consistent
quality
-Edited Phoenix's "sweating" animation so that the blink mode would be continuous
-Upgraded Sarah Keyes' sprites
-Upgraded Sandra Watters' profile
-Upgraded the mini-sprite cutscenes in TRT to fullscreen image backgrounds
-Upgraded the quality of one photo in TRT
-Upgraded the quality of one photo in TOTW
-Added a night version of the hospital in T-CON

Dialogue changes:
-Fixed a few minor dialogue and nametag errors in T-CON
-Changed one examination dialogue in T-CON so that the police chief wasn't
reacting the same way he would have in TOTW
-Added a few sound effects, shakes, and pauses to the dialogue in TRT
-Added a few minor bits of dialogue in TRT
-Gave Trucy a minor role in a few scenes of TRT
-Added Trucy's profile to the court record in TRT (three people respond to it)
-Completely changed the records room scene in TRT
-Slightly edited the scene with Obadiah in the police station in TRT
-Completely changed Virgil Black's introduction scene in TRT. The player now meets
him before any of the other OCs.
-Very slightly changed the post psyche-locks scene for one character in TRT
-Altered the pacing of Cody's scenes in TRT in day one. You now only have to
attempt the puzzle once.
-Added two small conversations throughout TRT relating to the Pearl plotline

Interface updates:
-Added lock icons to conversation topics connected to psyche-lock sequences (as
opposed to checkmarks)
-Added the Apollo Justice magatama button when a character's locks are activated
-In dual screen mode, when checking evidence, the list background will appear on
the bottom screen, along with an evidence box
-Removed the back button from luminol scenes in TRT

Bug/Error fixes:
-Fixed a bug where you could skip most of T-CON's finale during the
revisualization sequence
-Fixed a bug in T-CON where Maya would show up in the police station
-Fixed a bug in T-CON where you could go to the police station too early
-Fixed a bug in T-CON where comments after one testimony would appear as part of
the testimony

Music changes:
-Added the "Birds" background ambience to scenes at the Rivales Tower entrance
when Cody is not present

Miscellaneous:
-Added the option to present the Rivales card at one point during T-CON's second
trial.
-Upgraded the fingerprinting scene in TRT to actual fingerprinting, a la T-CON
-In the credits of T-CON, changed the location of one character during one of
the endings
-Reworded part of the TRT walkthrough for clarity
-Removed some music files that I planned to use but never did
-Added a few background fades in TOTW

There are some features in T-Unknown that required updates to the Pywright engine. Version 0.9880 causes several bugs that make later sections of the case unplayable. So, Turnabout into the Unknown is being released alongside a patched version of Pywright. To the best of my knowledge, most other Pywright games should still work on this, with the possible exception of Mia Fey: Ace Spirit Attorney, since that requires its own custom setup. So you're free to put all your other games in here and continue playing them.

This final case will not be playable with version 0.9880!!!

Here are uploads for a Windows version and Mac. They should both be ready to play, so all you have to do is start up Pywright. (Thanks to Darth Wiader for preparing the Windows version).

http://www.mediafire.com/download/xkej1ph9tfkrma2/PyWright_0.989_Windows.zip - Windows

Have fun! And be sure to write your reactions to the case so far.

Hello,
I've been playing through the case, and loving it thus far, but there seems to be a pretty major bug in the Mac version.
During
Spoiler:
The flashback trial of Mendirez where you play as Obadiah,

whenever I try to access the Court Record PyWright crashes and I get an error message stating
IndexError: list index out of range
Is this only a problem on my end, or is this happening to other people too?

This bug seems to be exclusive to the Mac version.
Ropfa wrote to me about it, but I did never encounter it on Windows. You'll have to wait for him to log in.

Yeah, I put him under "special thanks" on the first post.

Dangit, I guess other people are experiencing that too. None of the other testers mentioned anything, so I assumed it was just me. It must be just an issue for the Mac version. I've tried fixing it, and every time I think I've got it right, it just goes bad again the next time I start the case.

I already put in an alternate intro file, just in case this became an issue. It should be in your Turnabout into the Unknown folder.

In order to fix this error, follow these steps.

Spoiler:
1 - Go into the Turnabout into the Unknown folder and delete these files:
-autosave.ns
-save.ns
-save_backup (a folder)
2 - Delete the file intro.txt.
3 - Find the file intro2.txt and rename it to intro.txt.
4 - Start a new game. You will begin right at the beginning of the flashback.

Right now, intro2.txt does not allow you to choose what you did with Pearl in T-Consequences, so the game might just go with a default (I forget which option it is). However, for this first section of the case it won't be a major issue.

This didn't start happening until I included the custom button with Obadiah's image for the flashback. If it continues to be a problem, I might just end up keeping the one for Nick throughout the entire case.

:headbang:

Spoiler:
Edit:

So, it has absolutely nothing to do with the Obadiah bigbutton as I previously thought. In fact, as far as I can see, there should be no problem at all. I can see the exact section where things apparently break down in the code, but there doesn't appear to be any error. I'm currently speaking with DWAM and we're trying to find out what the heck the problem is. I will keep everybody updated, as I really want to get this fixed.

The problem at first glance appears to be with the first MN-6 file, but then using a new intro file to start directly from there causes no problems, so I officially have no clue what's happening.

Another edit:

We've narrowed it down to the several "addev" lines that put in the new evidence for MN-6. If I don't add anything, the bug doesn't happen. I've tried adding it in the next file, adding it in a previous file, adding only one thing, adding it before I delete the old evidence, and creating a new intermediary file solely for the purpose of adding evidence and no matter what I do, if I add the MN-6 evidence, the bug occurs, which makes no [expletive] sense (especially since it works perfectly fine if you start a new game from a new intro file). Pywright just really, really doesn't want me to add this evidence for some [expletive] reason.
If anybody with coding experience has any clue what might be going on, I would LOVE some help here.

HOPEFULLY final edit:

I've found a potential solution. It seems to run on a quick, heavily modified runthrough of the preceding scene. However, I'm going to try looking at it from the beginning of the investigation tomorrow to see if it holds up to a longer playthrough. I think the game is somehow corrupting save files once it gets to that point.

I'll get a fixed version out as soon as I can. In the meantime, just use the alternate intro file that I mentioned in my previous post.

Man, this is exciting! Can't wait to see how the first portion plays out. But is there any chance of a download link through something other than MediaFire? I don't know what the issue is but no computers at my house work with it, it only works if I download from a public access Wi-Fi.

I really need to see about getting that fixed.

EDIT: Nevermind, I got it fixed. I ended up using a proxy so I guess it really was my ISP. Now it's time to play!

I think i may see the problem and this may also be what is causing the crash.

now at first i thought nothing of it but the window for pywright still says it is version 0.9880 not the new version.

edit: and before you ask. yes i did re-download the link just to be sure.

I've updated T-Unknown and tested it again a few times and I can confirm that I have (as far as I can see) fixed the buggy court record issue that a few people were having. MUCH thanks to DWAM for helping resolve this. I have changed the download links so that they include the fixed version of the game (go ahead and redownload the case if you were having issues). The issue seems to have been with the save files. So, once the game reaches that point, I have included a command that will delete your current save files and then immediately save the game.
I have tried everything I could, and this was the only solution that I could find which didn't include splitting the case up into multiple sections. I honestly still have no idea what was wrong with the section, as the buggy code sections was exactly like several other parts in the game, so it doesn't make sense to me that it would be an issue here.

In the future, it's also recommended to never close Pywright while the game is in the process of saving, as it could potentially corrupt the save file.

megamike15 wrote:

I'm pretty certain that's not causing the bug. If that was the issue, it would've started causing problems much earlier than the scene in question.

Also, for your other issue
Spoiler:
Regarding perceive, I've amended the T-Unknown walkthrough to include a set of coordinates for the scene. Debug mode is still active for perceive, so you should be able to highlight somewhere around the listed coordinates and proceed.

so finally got around to finishing the case after all my issues.

Spoiler:
ugh i don't know what to think. hood is way to suspicious to not be involved somehow. unless this is like with Meridith and he is only pretending and is actually innocent.

1. it was cool to see gavin in court as we never really saw his way of defending. and he and hood's style seem like a more twisted version of phoenix's.

2. i was expecting edgeworth to turn up like in contempt of court but an older Franciska is just as good altho she seems to have back peddled abit character wise compared to when we last saw her.

3. the only reason hood would lie about the first murder is if he was involed somehow. same murder weapon two different killers is what i think.

4. you really don't want polly to appear at all huh? i remember thinking something was gonna happen to phoenix [ not be killed of course] and then Apollo would have to take over for the last day atlest.

5. trucy being the maya replacement is a thumbs up for me. she had very little screen time in this game besides the prequel case.

6. really feel bad for jimmy he died trying to solve something that was not as it seemed.

i hope you include a save file for the 2nd half. as when i did the text change to fix the crash now the saves i do have won't work for the new version.

Hey Ropfa, I gotta say that from watching your fangame being LPed on YT...it was the reason for me wanting to play through these cases for myself and have all the anticipation for whenever a new case comes out. That being said...I might have a problem:

Spoiler:
I know that the court record with the flashback has been brought up and I downloaded this late Feb 1st and I've been having Pywright crash whenever I either attempt to click the court record or get to the option where the judge wants me to present the facts for the case (I think). For the record, I have Windows and I downloaded the link on the first page which looks to be the same link as the Page 16 link for Pywright and all the good stuff. I'm sorry in advance if I missed something that mentioned a fix for both sides. :payne:

If you downloaded it on February first, then yes, it's been fixed since then.

Edit:
The update was put out maybe a day after people started reporting the errors... So it's possible that my dates are off, especially due to time zones. The Windows version's link is the same as it was before, since I just overwrote the original upload. It was working when I uploaded it. I believe you that you say you are having the error. To help me see if you have the updated version or not, please post (in spoiler brackets) the first three lines of the file M39.script in the Turnabout into the Unknown folder. They will be different if it's the new one.

Spoiler:
So I'm finally done.

You sure weren't kidding when you said that this case would tie everything together. I hate that Black is dead, he was hilarious and fun despite being a serial killer. At least his death wasn't as violent as Jimmy's. I'm guessing that the scene at the very end of Case 4 was meant to be Jimmy waiting to meet his killer? I'm gonna have to rewatch that through a different lens.

I also feel like Hood is a decent guy, he's just trying to protect his daughter. I dunno, I can't figure out if his backstory of being a "corrupt" Phoenix Wright is meant to be played for laughs or if it'll be taken seriously. Jane certainly is creepy, if nothing else. Also I still love that the Judge called out the bandage contradiction. That was hilarious.

Poor Gladys. She gets a bit more fleshed out and suddenly becomes hugely important...and then she dies. Honestly I kind of expected that to happen when she ran out. I wonder who posted her bail, though? The killer or an accomplice obviously, but it couldn't be someone that has to keep hidden. I guess we'll find out next time!

One thing I do think is odd is how determined you seem to be to keep Apollo out of the story. I mean, sure, I can understand wanting to push off the events of the time skip since they're pretty dumb, but having Trucy play a big role and even having freaking Kristoph appearing (that was a brilliant scene, even though we all know how it's going to end, especially with Togamera on the case) but keeping Apollo pushed to side feels weird. Well, I guess it doesn't really matter, surely he'll have to come back some time. Really, he should have been back that first day since Kurain is two hours by train and surely even less by car.

Well, regardless of Apollo, this is amazing work so far. I can't wait to see the end of it all. It's probably time to start a second playthrough on the "don't convict Pearl" route.

I mean... he can include who he wants. Technically it is in the same universe as Contempt of Court, so... it's a canon AU continuation. For all we know, Apollo is actually Trucy in disguise and Trucy is actually Apollo.

It's great to play this again after so much time. Even though I may not remember everything clearly, it all slowly comes back as I play. That's why at first, I didn't want to download the game and wait for the full release... but then again, I just couldn't resist, lol.

I finished playing the first half a few minutes ago. To sum it up all in just one word: Amazing.
It's fascinating to play an AA fan-game that feels just like a classic one.
Now, only the last half remains. Good luck with what's left of it, Ropfa! I'm sure you'll amaze us with the history.

Finally, some of my thoughts on the case, theories and some minor bugs/errors:

Spoiler:
Thoughts on the case:
- I enjoyed it a lot. I started playing it on February 1st and finished it today (couldn't play on February 2nd). Somehow I thought it was going to be shorter, but I'm glad I was wrong. After all, this is the final case. Really happy about this.
- Nice mix of old, new and classic characters. No one's there just for laughs, each and every one of them play an important role here.
- Not many AA games let you play as the prosecutor. Granted it was just a flashback, but nevertheless... kudos for that.
- I really liked Gladys. I'm sad to see her go. Hope we can see her again via channeling or something, probably at the end of the game, thanking Phoenix for uncovering everything... IF he uncovers everything with a happy ending, of course.
- I'm actually cool with not including Apollo. At this point, adding a character just for the sake of it wouldn't do. Apollo may be important in the canon series, but if he wasn't important here from the start, then so be it. I really liked his cameos though. Just like seeing Phoenix in the Edgeworth games.
- +10 for the CotC mention.

Theories:
- Someone mentioned it before in this topic, and I'll support their theory: Dreisan is the mastermind. As for why, well... he's the typical "distracted" character, giving the impression of being a bit dumb from time to time. This could be an act. There have been similar masterminds that did that too. Also, he has access to the bodies and maybe some other important things. He has also appeared quite a few times in the past. This, of course, doesn't indict him as the mastermind, Mendirez or whatever bad thing he could be. But I still don't trust him at all. And the fact that we can't see his eyes... hmm... >_> Again, I could be real wrong here, but that's what I think so far about the possible "final boss".

- This is more like a random thought than a theory. I think that Jimmy may still be alive. Considering what I said before about Dreisan, he could've somehow escaped death. He lured Porter into folloing him, but what if he did that on purpose to fake his death and create a witness? It was dark, after all. Someone could've disguised as him for whatever reason. And, who knows, he could even be one of the bad guys, or even worse, THE MASTERMIND HIMSELF! .............................. or not. Ignore me. (?)

- Maya will save the day somehow. I know she will... I hope. D:

Bugs/Errors:

- First time you cross-examine Dreisan, pressing the first statement. There's a typo on Dreisan's first dialogue over there, I can't quite remember what was it, but I do remember the location.

- I've encountered the crash problem with Obadiah's flashback. It seems that others encountered it too and that you're working to fix it. My experience: I tried to open it while taking to the witness in the first scene, and the game closed itself. Luckily I made a save right at the beginning of that scene, so I tried again, opened the Court Record but no crash happened, so I kept on playing. I've downloaded the new CoI file at February 1st. Hope you can fix it!

- A little problem with the perceive part. First, as others have already stated, it's a bit hard to select Hood's eyes even though you know that's the nervous tic, but that's no real problem, since it takes only a few tries and you said it's specified in your walkthrough how to do it with the coordenates (I didn't read it at that time). Second, and prolly most important, is that sometimes, you can't go to Hood's upper part. Specifically, you can't go up after his eyes, sometimes you can, some others you can't, making it difficult to perceive. I've noticed it lets you go more or less in the up direction if you move around and try again. I understand including the perceiving system was really hard, so no worries if you can't solve this, since others haven't had this problem as far as I see. Maybe it's random, dunno. :yogi:

- Text off-screen in one of Wood's cross-examination, when you're defending Gladys. Here's a pic:

- Franziska's "Objection!" has a really low volume.

And I think that's all.
Can't wait for the final half!
We do what we must because we can.
