This is my theory. XD In T&T, younger Gumshoe also has a light colored coat, identical to the one Maggey gave him. So perhaps his natural state is just to get his coat unbelievably filthy so that it takes on a darker color.

That's what I always thought. He never washed it.
That seems reasonable to me knowing how poor Gumshoe is.
