Hey guys! I was replaying 1-5 today, and I couldn't help but notice something interesting in a conversation between Gumshoe, Ema and Phoenix...

Spoiler:
Location: Evidence room
Present: Crime Photo

Gumshoe: That Ms. Starr is quite the lady. Why, I remember, it was winter... I was 16. She was the only one who ever got me to talk about what happened.
Ema: 16... that's how old I am now! I wonder what happened?
Phoenix: (I wonder if Detective Gumshoe wore a trench coat in high school, too.)

Now this might be nothing, but what on earth is this mysterious event? I sure hope I'm not missing something. What did Gumshoe cough up to Angel Starr so many years ago?

I'm asking this here because I imagine that the only chance we'd ever get an answer to this question would be in the Perfect Prosecutor game, especially if it's about Gumshoe and Edgeworth's relationship. A clue or hint? Or just silly speculation? :3

What was Gumshoe doing that Angel Starr would need to quiz him?

I was always really curious about that, too. I wish Phoenix had asked instead of just wondering if Gumshoe wore a trenchcoat in high school. Duh, of course he did.

Knowing Gumshoe's fondness for shaggy dog stories, it's probably nothing of note. I'm still curious though.

I can easily imagine Edgeworth trying to get the information out of Gumshoe, only to find out that Gumshoe was traumatized by the sight of someone stealing one coin from a memorial fountain.

Duh. When Gumshoe was 16, he tried to fulfill his lifelong dream of being a wizard. However he accidentally tapped into the secrets of dark magic and nearly destroyed the world.

I wouldn't be surprised. And when he'd finished telling the story, he'd start shaking all over and burst into tears. xD

Knowing Gumshoe, I doubt it's anything serious. In GS3, his deep dark secret was that he wanted to be a wizard when he was a kid. XD

That would be interesting if it was something deep though! That'd be cool if they explored it in this game.

You remember his deep, dark (psyche-lock) secret in case 3-3: that he listened to a lottery show on the radio!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I got that brief feeling of "Great, another psych-lock" followed by about a minute of laughter as one measly lock poped onto the screen. I don't even think :knock-knock: psych-lock (from the very first time you learn of them) was that easy.

Still it would be nice to know what that event referred to. Or anything about Gumshoe's past, friends, family, etc. Since about the only thing we know about that is when he became a detective. Heck, I'd like to know what he was like as a patrolman...

If he was promoted to Detective, he must have been good. Otherwise, meekins would be detective ^_^.

That was my initial reaction as well but I forgot that the two of them are only a year apart age wise. Unless Angel became a detective at age 17 (which is honestly possible if :franny: can do so at 13). And by do so I mean become a prosecutor. Not a detective.

School trials, just like Phoenix.

Maybe Gumshoe committed a crime? That doesn't make much sense though....

Gumshoe is such a sweety, it's probably that he adopted a homeless dog on the street and was too scared to tell his parents ^^ (That would be so cute to see)

I remember seeing that part of the text, but I didn't pay much attention to it. Like others here have already said, it's not like his secrets were that deep and dark. But I guess since Angel Starr is apparently going to be in Gyakuten Kenji, it'd be really interesting if they managed to bring that in. Not even as a full on clue or something, but even a small quote from Angel herself would be nice. :phoenix:

I'd love to see more of Gumshoe's background in GK, and given that he's going to be a central character it's more than likely that at least some of it will be revealed.

On the serious side, I'd be devastated if they tried to give Gumshoe more depth by giving him a tragic background or such-like, because that sort of past just doesn't fit his character and would be a cheap way to create more interest in the character (which is entirely unnecessary IMO).

But while we're discussing trenchcoats: I want a flashback where Gumshoe wears his first ever trench. I would love for there to be some deep meaning or fond memories behind it, it would be sweet.

I didn't notice that text either. It would be unexpectedly interesting if Angel Starr inspired Gumshoe to be a detective through some kind of case that happened at his high school maybe. As most have speculated, I don't expect it to be extremely surprising or jaw-dropping, but if we got to see how he started his interest in going down that career path, then I would be happy. ^^

Yeeeeessssss. *was gonna post a thread just like this*

Although I can only see two paths in terms of where 'ol Gummyshoez's past would probably go:

1. OMGTRAGIC-past: One where "OH NOEZ, something really serious happened and it left some emotional scars that he manages to hide (or forget xD)".
Pro: It would a bit of depth to his character and we'd get to see another side of him.
Con: He wouldn't be "the bumbling oaf that we all know and love" anymore, he'd be "the bumbling oaf with an angsty past that we all know and love". I.e., he wouldn't be the same.

2. Not-so-serious past that's comicly sad:
Pro: Hey, at least he's still Gumshoe, right?
Con: And that's all he is, nothing else; it's unlikely that there's another side to his character.

...

Yeah, sorry if this doesn't make any sense (it's late here). :yuusaku:

I would much rather option 2 to option 1, but there's always the middle ground. Gumshoe can (and hopefully does) have a past that's neither overwhelmingly angsty or humourous but has an equally meaningful impact on his character. As was suggested before, perhaps Angel inspired him somehow.

He's honest and driven to do good; I would expect either a highly motivational experience or an overt display of naivete more than I would something dark or trivial.
