It's just a common pattern used in a lot of anime media apparently. I'm pretty sure it's based off an actual ...thing though.
Also I thought Miku's shirt pattern was just referencing her cloud-related name.

Her original pose suggests her personality will be somewhat sly. Her other sprites also indicate that she is a happy person, and probably similar to Maya's and Trucy's happiness level.

More seriously, thief characters are generally known for being upbeat and happy. Think Yuffie from FFVII or Rikku from FFX-2. She's probably going to be hyper and friendly to contrast with Edgeworth's...um...

Hmmm, I can't imagine him working with a teenager girl either. But, Mikumo looks like a fun character. Mabye thats because I'm a teenager like her :O. Jk, jk. Well, thats just my opinion.

These are just some musings that I had inferred from Mikumo's picture and the little information that we have about her right now, so it's likely I'm completely off base ;;
I was pretty neutral on Maya, but I loved Trucy. Judging by what we've seen of her, I do believe she's sly, but also a confident character. From the fact that she is a "self-proclaimed" thief of TRUTH, I imagine Mikumo to be rather idealistic and dreamy- but still grounded (for lack of finding a better word at the moment). Her expressions are all very silly and it feels to me personally that she's the type of person that just brushes or laughs off a mistake or light-hearted insult. Due to Edgeworth actually working with her, you have to gather that there is something of worth to him about her, whether that be she tags along by force or he willingly accepts her. For one, Mikumo has to be cunning and intelligent- normally that type of character would appeal to me as the type that withheld an amount of information, but considering Mikumo's search for truth, I take it that she's quite justice-oriented (contradictary considering that she calls herself a thief). However, it's undoubtable that she's a bubbly teenage girl- stylish, silly, and makes use of her handy cell-phone. By that I'm leaning towards the fact she pushed herself into the role of Edgeworth's assistant. I think that she's likely to get ahead of herself, and jump head-first into situations, which is indeed a big clash with Edgeworth. I do feel it's a good thing though, and I'm really interested to see their relationship.
