Funny thing is, I recently found out about the "Lawyerman" project, rather stumbled upon it (it looks so cool!), and that was pretty much what Edgy's power was.
I was laughing for a while after that.Really I suppose, if he even needs one, it will be some sort of key related item. What with that being his teenaged girl sidekick's theme...

You know the gameplay so far on images etc. it shows detective-y kind of work yet none of that includes the courtroom... will there be courtroom gameplay involved in the game??? just curious since they haven't shown us any yet???

Yes, a cravat is the frilly thing that Edgeworth has around his neck. Some people prefer to call it a jabot. *shrugs* I won't get into that argument. XD
There's a Gyakuten Kenji FAQ topic at the very top of this forum, you may want to check it out. ^_^ But no, there will not be court scenes in this game.

It's just a shame that he hasn't attempted to used his cravat to deal with Oldbag's continuous advances.
Edgeworth loves when Oldbag does that. She makes him feel special. Gumshoe just makes him feel gay.

That's one of the things that makes AA fun. The complete flexibility with the pairings that they leave open.

And Miss Lunaria42 explained the other part. There's only several instances where one can perceive 'undertones' as 'proof' for a certain coupling, but that's up to the player's imagination. Capcom pleases its fans that way.
And sometimes people just pair one character with another without a logical reason but it doesn't matter -- it's fun. (For instance, in my case, as I pair Franziska with Larry. Strange, but I like strange.)
