Take four moderately strong units in, and make them stand in a diagonal line in the south-western corner. Make sure the top two are your strongest, with the other two being moderatly powerful. Let the Partnet units suicide themselves, and survive. If your REALLY weak, use the Burger King (when he comes) to demolish everything. Anyway, from the defensive line, use Micaiah to hit the enemy indriectly (staying behind the line), possibly Jill to hit and run (she can do this when she's in line as well), and make Laura heal her (or Micaiah.) Give the Beastfoe scroll (if you have it) to the northern most character. All in all, it should look a bit like this... Before the Burger King comes.

Of course, I haven't done Normal... so I can't speak for that mode.

The issue is implementing this without breaking the game. The other issue is the suggested overhauling of the lynch system - it's a little flat at the moment.
It also looks like Round V will be another triple-faction game. :D
(On that note: why did you side with Karma anyway? XD)

Example: Townie receives the Screwdriver. Keeping the Screwdriver for the day/night session allows Townie to block or hinder a nightly action, but if it's given to Phoenix, he can use it to wiretap a player's phone in order to learn about all their actions that night. Note that in both options, the evidence will expire by the next day.
It's possible that Phoenix could have some option to save one or two pieces of evidence to his Court Record, but he can only use one per day/night (possibly use one during the day and one during night). Townies can only hold on to one piece of evidence at a time, which disappears every sunrise when they receive a new piece of potentially decisive evidence.
If we allow Mafia normies access to evidence as well, then there could be a lot of hectic stuff going on with normal Townies and Mafia sabotaging each other with their "Mario Kart" items.
Example: Mafioso receives Missile. Mafioso can then use Missile to destroy a piece of evidence held by another player.
I'm unsure if the Mafia will have access to a "roulette upgrade" method like Phoenix, but probably not.

The issue is deciding how the evidence itself works - it's very vague at the moment. From the sounds of it, both versions of the system require that the evidence has at least three effects:
1) A Townie effect
2) A Mafia effect
3) A Phoenix Wright effect
If we introduce the court system as well, then you need to add another two:
4) Acquit XXX effect
5) Convict XXX effect
The saying: "one man's trash is another man's treasure" springs to mind. :)

Adding the court system to it, what you seem to be saying is that Phoenix would now have two options for his gathered evidence: consuming a piece of evidence for a crucial ability, or using it in court to defend a client. As I said before, this is probably just too complicated for its own good, since now we have to decide how evidence interacts with each other for trial purposes, in a way that makes sense...
But the bigger problem is that Phoenix is supposed to be a player role, that is, biased. Do we want to allow him the power to willingly lose a trial? This makes Phoenix into a God-like Town Vigilante, in a way, because once the defendants are selected by vote, it completely relies on Phoenix's arbitration to find each defendant Guilty/Not Guilty. Everyone's lives are in his hands! Discovering his identity so as to influence his decisions is key to keeping one's faction out of hot water... that or eliminating him outright.
