Also, to answer your question: the "unlucky" individuals would in fact be selected from the pool of registered players. You couldn't select them randomly though because the game would collapse if they went inactive.
Also, you mentioned EricaP. I'm surprised no-one's PMed them offering to help them play. Also, GP's gone awfully quiet in the Dead Thread. Come poke fun at the game with us! :(

If we go the Evil Narrator route, I think Phoenix and Miles could act as helper GMs for confused players. Sort of like tech support.

That said, Gant should be one of two or three roles that can directly manipulate evidence. The most powerful evidence manipulation that one can perform, of course, is one that affects the Court system - perhaps that should be exclusive to Gant, much like how Manfred von Karma can rig the next day's vote for a guaranteed kill.

Like any Townie, you fight for the Town and the Townie population.
Miles Edgeworth – Disgraced Prosecutor?: Normally, Mr. Edgeworth would be busy finding the Mafiosi and bringing them to justice, but unfortunately he's been trapped in a living nightmare – his own murder trial. Despite his temporary inability to prosecute or investigate, during a nighttime phase Edgeworth can send secret arrest requests to Detective Gumshoe via PM to the GM; he may send up to two names for arrest. Gumshoe will be sent the arrest request immediately after the GM receives it. What Gumshoe decides to do with the request is his decision...
If Edgeworth or Detective Gumshoe is eliminated, the town may then request an arrest headed by a private eye by sending the request with a target to the GM via PM. At least four townies must request the same target for the arrest to go ahead, or Edgeworth and another Townie, or all the Townies. The arrest is carried out two game days later at the beginning of the next daytime phase.
For you to win, all of the Mafia and Manfred von Karma must die.
Faction Tactics:
Townies: The Town has the most control over lynch voting and is the largest faction; take advantage of this and gather strength in numbers so that neither the Mafia nor von Karma can destroy you. Watch out for spies trying to sabotage the Town's plans; it could be anyone, even one of your own faction. Be careful not to let paranoia destroy your chances of victory, however, and do not turn away rogue wild card players too quickly, for they may provide the Town with the extra assistance it needs to win the Town back.
Role Tactics:
In past rounds, Miles was able to kill other players. This ability has been lost. Your role may not seem very powerful, but it will nevertheless be very helpful in bringing a speedy end to Manfred von Karma. Your role exists to provide the Town with a means to eliminate Manfred quickly – this also means that he will make you a priority target. Manfred's identity cannot be found out by an investigation, but clever use of the investigation and watching the public thread may give him away.
To use your abilities, you do not need to know who Gumshoe is; I will handle your arrest requests on your behalf. However, finding out who he is and protecting him will greatly increase the Town's chances of success. The Mafia and von Karma will be out for your blood; be careful out there, Miles! :)
You will find the Living Thread, where you can post your ideas and cunning plans to other players in public, here. Do not forget that you are allowed (and expected!) to PM other living players as well. Use Private Messages to plan your victory.

Well, it's mostly just the unintentional hilarity occurring all over the place.
Besides much funner being able to see behind the scenes and understand pretty much everything thats going on, instead of floating around and being confused. Perhaps I won't join in CR Mafia 5 after all. Meh, I don't know.
