This is the current model of the all-new MASON Court System. Please note that yellow points are parts that are currently under development. The crux of all this is whether Phoenix should be an NPC role.

  • Daytime
Unroled players gather evidence, and can use them to gain small one-time powers. Townies have the option of giving the evidence to Phoenix instead. If Phoenix is a player role, he may be able to use evidence pretrial to gain a special, one-time power.
Votes are cast by all players.
The top X number players voted out are put on trial.
  • Trial
Phoenix and Miles use evidence to decide the fate of each defendant player in turn. It is currently not known how evidence decides this, however a rock-paper-scissors system may be a good model.
Guilty players are lynched, their role revealed.
Not Guilty players are freed. They may gain temporary immunity.
  • Nighttime
    Players use their night actions.
Players may be able to gather more evidence in this time.

Other question: should special roles be given hidden powers? Much like Velo's "hidden roles," these are abilities granted to special roles that are not publicly revealed. This is an obvious vehicle to mask Joe Darke's mass-murder ability.

This was my original idea. However, this has a big problem - what if there are no killing roles left? Or are we to keep the vote-lynch backup systems from Rounds 3 and 4?

That's seems like a good idea. But will the players (besides the person who has the role, of course) be aware that this person has a hidden power? Or will it be a total surprise?

Yeah, immunity to lynching was the original idea. That would mean there would have to be no "can't be killed" roles, though, unless there were some other way to kill someone...

Recent Mafia game I observed on my brother's forum had an ability that could turn a player's ability back on themself. It became the center point for killing a particular player that had made himself virtually unkillable due to his secret role's ability to change the rules of the game, granting himself powers and protection over time while the ignorant Townies never voted to stop his changes. What actually happened, however, was that a dead player piped up about it and the kill wasn't made, so the Townies had to find ANOTHER way to kill that particular player. Turns out that their game would lynch both/all top voted players in the event of a draw, and since the targeted player wasn't protected against vote kills, they had to manipulate everyone's abilities to switch votes around and force a deadlock vote... thus sacrificing a Townie in a draw with this evil mastermind known as the Senator.

I would suggest we keep the backup systems. All immunity might also be revoked in that scenario.

ValiantValant wrote:

I think players should be able to submit evidence without knowing Phoenix's identity, otherwise he wouldn't be able to properly defend for the earlier Trials.

Quote:

I think it should be noted that the role has nonpublic powers, so people know to look out for weird activities.

This just gave me the humorous idea of giving every role a NEKKETSU secret power that is revealed to them only in their PM. Certain conditions have to be met in order to use it, and when they do I'll put up a big banner image with a courtroom zoom-in of that role's face, Objection style. It's a one-off, of course.

(Nekketsu is "hot blood" in Japanese, and often refers to an indomitable "overdrive" attitude)

Again, all this commotion over a REGULAR TOWNIE. It's like Leo on Day 1.

Regardless of his attitude, his tactics defy the Mafia spirit too... by now I have enough to GM 'bolt him for being unsporting. However, because I get much mirth and merriment from his wacky antics, I'll leave him be for now. Besides, this could easily devolve into harassment, which is not cool.

Ya know, for all his talk about his alliance, I think this is the first time he's every stated exactly how limited knowledge is at any time in his alliance.

Although, it's still rather weird, how are they supposed to not vote for each other if they don't know who else is in the alliance? Something smells fishy bout that.

Here, here.

Plus, there is the fact that Iris, Franziska, Gumshoe, Furio, the Godmother, AND Viola are not a part of his "alliance." So, at best, he's got a bunch of regular Townie/Mafioso minions.

Heh, Leo threw the first stone, but will anybody follow him? Even if they lynch the Godmother, Sklarvv will still be pulling the strings. So really, they'll just be taking care of the "figurehead". I just got an interesting PM. itsaqua correctly suspects you of betraying the faction you formally allied with, DXK. Given the extreme circumstances of the betrayal, I will not pursue it - after all, you're dead XD - but technically once you allied with the Mafia, betraying them was against the rules.

Had you sent that PM as a wild card though, everything would be kosher. :D

With this in mind, the nature of the affiliation mechanic needs to be cleared up for Round V. Dropping it is a bad move if the round features wild cards and/or turncoats as it reintroduces the awkward OMFGJOINTOWNIESTOSAVEMYASS gameplay that used to be typical of the wild cards. They work properly now. :)

Penny's done a great job of staying under the radar. Just as long as it doesn't end up getting Gumshoe killed, everything'll be fine. Although I can't see why they'd kill Penny, unless they somehow knew that you told both Regy and Penny about everything, which I see as unlikely. Sure itsaqua suspects you, but even if they were positive that you betrayed them, they wouldn't know who you confided in.

Yes, we'll need official affiliation mechanics in Round V. What with all the betrayals going on (especially with Lana) I have yet to figure out who's going to be working with who.

Originally I wanted Lana to be working for Gant. If something happens to Ema, of course, Lana will break ranks (NEKKETSU) and pwn sum bitchez.
