It's his last opera, based on King René's Daughter (a Danish play). Though I prefer Mazeppa, the music in Iolanta is fabulous, and a great introduction to Tchaikovsky's operas and style in general, being light enough for people new to the opera world to avoid being overwhelmed by, but at the same time giving people a clear sense of what to expect from Tchaikovsky. His ballets, though admirable in their own right, don't fully express the passion Tchaikovsky poured into his music, in my opinion.
