Is it to learn acoustic guitar? I've tried to pick up bass long long ago, so I have a very crude understanding of how a guitar works.

Lately, I've been getting all these great idea's of songs in my head (and I have a basic mastery of reading/writing music) but I can't exactly put it into song without the proper tools. So I've decided to teach myself to play acoustic guitar,

so, those of you guitar junkies/veterans any tips/pointers? Also, if anyone has any suggestions as to the brand of acoustic to pick up that'd be more than welcome.

Please bear in mind that I don't work because I'm just like that and I don't have all that much money (part of the reason why I'm teaching myself after all) but I don't care about that stuff, I just want to make music.

Suggestions, points, advice, anything?

What kind of tone are the songs you have in mind?

I'm learning the guitar myself, and I'm actually finding Ultimate Guitar and Chordie to be good websites for learning new chords, and new songs.

What sort of music are you looking to play?

Ultimate Guitar is the best. Although some of the chord diagrams are confused, because when you have say a Gm/F chord, it lists Gm and F as separate chords, whereas that is a chord variation on Gm and is different to both.

Only other tips is not to be disheartened if you can't play something at first because you can't change quick enough, or can't stretch to the chords. You'd be surprised how quickly your dexterity increases with practice.

In terms of a make of Guitar, I always recommend paying your local music specialist shop a visit, tell them your criteria and see what they suggest. Find one that suits you when it comes to size, weight, neck width and tone.

Since you played bass, you should have a good idea of playing riffs and stuff like that, so I'd start with some bar chords, and work your way to chords. Ultimate Guitar should be fantastic. I started out with another site but Ultimate Guitar is way better, seriously. If you click on chords for a song, there'll be a little fingering chart that pops up if you mouse over it, which I found fantastic. xP

What I did for piano was slowly stretch each of my fingers a little farther apart each day, and hold it for a while. Even with little wimpy hands like mine, I can get a 9 key span on the piano now. : D
