So like, I totally just bought a magazine cuz it had a 2-page spread on Layton.

The article was hilarious, too. XD My favourite part: A picture of Luke after he's been scratched by Claudia, with the caption: "With that look on his face, he must be suffering puzzle abstinence".

Also, I finished the meme but I'm in a hotel so I can't post it D;

Hmmm, I dunno if I can get a scan anytime soon *is on vacation* but I could post the main text....

.....If I could find it, that is :maggy: sorry, I'll come back later if I can.

EDIT: Yes, I have the article! The original text was in Portuguese, so some of the jokes are lost in translation.

Also, in retrospect, the above quote is better translated as "From the look, that squirt must be suffering puzzle withdrawal symptoms".

Spoiler: Article main text (also, the answer to one of the puzzles)
Two brothers talk at a dinner table: "Little bro, if you take two years of my life and add them to yours, you'll have double my age. However, if you take three, you'll have the triple!" Can you guess the ages of the two squirts?

The enigma above illustrates one of the zillions you will find in Professor Layton and the Curious Village. Unless you're a crazed Nintendo fan- and I believe you are, or else you would have bought a different magazine- I doubt you've heard of this game. And, even if you had, it's very unlikely you have added it to your list of acquisitions. So, you can be sure of one thing: you can buy it with your eyes closed.

Professor Layton is not traditional. This match's workings are not what you are used to seeing: There's no character under your command, enemies to be defeated or anything that will remind you of an adventure, platformer or any other genre of games. But if there's nothing of that, does that mean the visuals are rotten? The mechanics, horrendous? Quite the opposite: the graphics are among the most beautiful on the DS, we're not exaggerating, and the control system is simple and intuitive enough that it doesn't need long tutorials.

A trickster's prank

Practically: the game has a story that unfolds according to the enigmas you solve. And there's a lot of enigmas. Everything- absolutely everything- is based on puzzles. Played out by the Professor and his assistant, the story begins with a very well made animation of the couple in route to the fictitious town of St. Mistere. The local architecture clearly shows the European influence, reinforced by the dubbing (yes, the game is dubbed!) with a British accent.

There, you talk to all the people to collect information. By this point you notice something comical in the air: everyone, no exceptions, always have an enigma for you- no matter what the subject, a puzzle will result from it. But because of the way the story unfolds, it's also obvious that you are already glued in such a way you won't leave your DS so soon. Each challenge is unique and demands logical rationalization and excellent text interpretation. They are the tipical vestibular pranks presented in a fun manner. The riddles are divided by difficulty level, represented by the points you get from solving them. The ten-pointers are simple, the 50-pointers are good for melting brains. For each mistake, the maximum number of points declines. This happens three times and then the prize stabilizes. In other words, even if you make a mistake three times, you can keep trying infinitely to get the lowest number of points. Well, to compensate for the difficulty, you can ask for three hints before you risk an answer. Of course, there's a price to be payed (in this case, coins you find around the city). Soon, it's not enough to talk to people, but click on everything in the scenery. Everything goes: lamps, tables, paintings. This creates an interesting mechanic: the more you poke around, the higher the chances of finding coins that will help your life in solving problems.

Fool's gold

That is, that works for honest people. Despite the geniousness of the stages, there's a slip up that rewards cheaters: reset the portable after finding out the answer lets you go back to the enigma to get it right the "first time" and get the maximum score. Here you miss a Mr. Resetti, someone who reminds the player that cheating is not cool- and I'm sure many people will be tempted to try to gain points in an unloyal manner.

Independently of the manner in which you wish to play, what is good to state is the fun proportioned by the game. It's one of those you won't leave so soon. Even away from the DS, you will catch yourself mulling over the latest damn puzzle you haven't been able to solve. Each stage conquered gives a supreme taste of victory. Few games have this capacity of satisfying the player. By the way: Each brother is six years old.

Spoiler: Game score
What is it
Fry your brain with a series of logic puzzles presented in a simple game, but with a fantastic story.
Visual: 9
If it depended only on the animations, it would easily get a 10, but the scenery doesn't have much details.
Audio: 9
The soundtrack is simple, but memorable. The dubbing has set parameters for other DS games.
Playability: 8
If you try and make it better, you'll ruin it: Everything, absolutely everything, comes down to taps on the touchscreen.
Innovation: 8
The way in which the story unfolds deserves its own highlight. Seriously, check it out.
BOTTOM LINE
Entertainment for more than a month: some enigmas take hours, maybe days, without ever stressing out or making the game annoying.
86

(note: according to their scale, 86 is a "definitely do not miss or you'll regret it" game.)

Spoiler: Picture captions
(Picture of the Wolves and Chicks puzzle)
Classic! Who doesn't remember this puzzle: move all the animals to the other side of the river without letting the wolves eat the chicks?

(Picture of inspector Chelmey)
Hitler didn't die! He went to St. Mistere to work as an investigator.

(Picture of the first puzzle in the game)
Your objective here is to circle the only village not connected to the others. So, have you figured out the answer yet?
-This one is funny because at the top it says "8 picarats", meaning they got it wrong on their first try XDD

(Picture of Layton and Luke by the drawbridge)
SECRET ENIGMAS AND LOTS OF CONVERSATION
Poking around the scenery has another utility besides finding coins: unlocking secret enigmas. There's tons of them, so, be patient and search every centimeter of the screen before heading to the next point. Also, don't be shy to speak to the same people more than once: a lot of them have many enigmas to offer.

My favorite hobby? Eating French Toast and solving puzzles.

Yeah, that's kind of sad. They have a good fanbase- it's getting praise right and left. People state that this game wants to make them break their DS in half or jump of a skyscraper yet they find this to be one of the best games they've ever played. And you have to account for the fanbase that DOESN'T go on the internet. This game was obviously aimed at the older generations as well as the younger ones, so I expect they have quite a potential market for their second installment.

D:

Well, I really hope that they do finish the trilogy for us. I think I would die if I couldn't finish it without buying it in japanese and not know what I'm doing.

And in other news, does anyone know of a Professor Layton forum out there? I've seen subforums on Gamespot and IGN and such, but is there an actual forum for Professor Layton? I'm just wondering :) (I would probably lurk, but I would think about joining if I found it interesting enough)

There isn't one yet, but the Livejournal community is starting a CR-style fansite, which would include a forum. Dunno when it will go up, though.
