I figure since the Hotel Dusk board vecame the home for CiNG's Trace Memory, Again, and such, that the Layton board can be used for Level-5's other projects.

Anyways, according to GoNintendo, Time Travelers is due out this summer in Japan. I'm honestly surprised it's due that soon-ish. I've yet to be diappointed by a game that focuses on Time Travel as an important mechanic (Chrono Trigger, Radiant Historia, Ghost Trick, Time Hollow) so I have high hopes for this game. And yet, we've seen only one trailer and no gameplay. I don't know if this should make me more excited or....

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought it was about Unwound Future XD. Never heard of this game, must find out more.

Don't forget Unwound Future, Wooster. That's about time travel, too.

I don't know anything about this game. Who does?

No one really knows anything about the title. I believe the protagonist is a high school female student. But as for plot and gameplay, that's a huge blank.

As for unwound future, I haven't played it yet, but I've temporarily traded 999 with Croik to try it out. Just gotta wait for it to arrive.

It'll be interesting to see exactly what this is, since they've been so mum on it. Looks visual-novelish...?

Also, if I'm not mistaken, that girl isn't actually playable, but an important character. They announced 5 (I think) protagonists in a Famitsu article a while back.

Looks like it could have a June/July release. The timing sounds extra fishy to me. TGS isn't until fall with Level 5 world generally soon after. Seems a bit early to release a game no one knows the first thing about.

What's more, June/July already got quite a few high-profile releases, including another game by Level-5, so I'm doubtful... That'd be a tad overkill to release it during that period. Especially since we don't know that much about the game yet, and I don't think we'll get more news before the TGS, in September. A late 2012/early 2013 (march) would make more sense in my opinion.

Soooo.... July the 12th it is then.
Guess that makes sense, the Playstation Mortis's in dire needs of games (just like the 3DS in its time).

Looking forward to finally getting a good look at the game near/at release. Like I said above, if memory serves the Level-5 World demo played out like a visual novel, so I'm curious as to what sort of gameplay this actually has. (People over at NeoGAF are saying it's a straight visual novel, though.)

Well, apparently the game actually is a visual novel.
What really worries me is that we haven't seen anything about the game, if you don't count one trailer without any actual trace of gameplay.
I hope they didn't rush the game because the PlayStation Mortis was in dire need of games, and Sony pressured Level-5 to hurry the hell up... :o

They had a demo? The only thing I've seen of this game was a rather cinematic 3D movie. But nothing that hinted of gameplay. :lana: Unless 'Romantic Sim' was one of them. Gosh I hope romance isn't a selling part of the game.

More details on the game (but still nothing on the actual gameplay) :

Quote:
We previously detailed the story, but here's a recap. In the year 2031, mankind has created a 2000 meter "Space Elevator" in Tokyo Bay. Eighteen years prior, a great disaster known as "Lost Hole" caused destruction to the city, but people quickly recovered, and Tokyo is now developing into an even larger, more modern city than before.

The story begins with announcer Hina Fushimi conducting an interview with once great scientist Kyugo Shindo. During the interview, the research facility the two are in suffers a sudden explosion. If the explosions continue, the result could be a 50 kilometer blast zone.

Characters introduced at the site include:

Mikoto

A high school girl who appears before each of the five main characters. Each character encounters a slightly different Mikoto, with different clothing and atmosphere.
Five different versions of Mikoto.

Hina Fushimi

An idol female announcer who's out for the scoop on the mysterious terrorist known as Dokuro the Beast.

Yuri Fukase

A top student who has a major secret a past incident.

Soma Kamiya

A top detective with the police. His wife and children are taken hostage, and he's ordered to perform a terrorist act. Does he choose to save his family, or the residents of Tokyo?

Kyugo Shindo

A once great physicist who defrauded people of investment money claiming that he was making a time machine.

Ressentiment

This thirty-year-old's father stopped giving him his allowance, and his girlfriend of five years broke up with him. He refers to himself as a hero.

The game system section mentions the "full voice, full motion" drama that Level-5 promised at the game's announcement some time back. There's one actual gameplay system mentioned at the site: a Quick Timer Event system. More gameplay system details will be shared in future updates.

(Quoted from Andriasang).

Why do I get the feeling it'll be more of an 'interactive' movie, rather than a Visual Novel? :adrian:

Cast sounds solid for a time travel theme. Still would like some gameplay and screen shots.

Edit: Now I have some screen shots. Don't tell much but… Is Ms. Orange Vest a not-so-subtle jab at a certain Back to the Future protagonist?

Maybe the far left schoolgirl outfit is a reference to the Girl who Leapt through time....or it could just be a Japanese schoolgirl.

You can hit up the official site for better screens:

http://www.timetravelers.jp/index.html

Between the quick time events and intersecting storylines, the game's starting to feel a bit like an anime Heavy Rain. Not that that's a bad thing.

The game's out pretty soon, so L5 have put up a PV for it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3almKADxek

They've also talked about the gameplay a little more. It looks like you can switch between characters whenever, and in fact have to to progress, sort of like 428. The example they give is Soma (the detective) running across the street when he's hit by a van Hina is riding in; switching to her gives an opportunity to drive more carefully and avoid the accident.

Famitsu reviewed the game, and here's their score :

Quote:
Time Travelers - 9, 9, 9 and 9

Guess they liked it. I was starting to get worried they had rushed the game to help revive the Playstation Mortis, but looks like it's not the case. Hope we can find more details on their review, and not just the scores, to see what they liked and didn't like.

I really miss the days when an epic rating by Famitisu meant something other then that the magazine world wasn't as profitable as it used to.

Wait, why is this thread in this subforum? xD

Anyway, I'll probably buy this when I buy my 3DS LL (on the 28th.... hopefully ^^'). Not reading through here since I don't want spoilers, but... I have no idea what this game is, but I'm really excited for it xP

I'll post my thoughts and stuff on it when I get around to it (which might be a while, since I plan on playing VLR first... ^^')

Not quite the best opening week ever, which is kinda surprising. The thing that makes me think it's not really good is the fact it sold more units on the Mortis than on the 3DS, who sold, like, 8 times as much as the PSV.
Kinda curious to see how it'll fare next week, as it's released today on PSP.

Time Travelers 3DS : nowhere to be seen in this week's charts.
Time Travelers PSV : nowhere to be seen in this week's charts.
Time Travelers PSP : nowhere to be seen in this week's charts.

Guess we can kiss any chance of localisation goodbye. We'll probably get AAI2 released on DS before Level-5 localises this game. *sigh*

I'm busy with VLR atm, but I decided to play a teensy bit of Time Travelers...

It starts off pretty crazy xP

There's furigana, which is good, but a good chunk of the text is also subtitles in videos (auto-advancing) so...... hrm.........

The visuals are nice, but there's some pretty obvious pixelation in places like people's hairlines or the edge of their faces. (That problem might not be in the PSV or PSP versions, though.)

Also, if the image on the top screen is 2D (like, a cell phone screen) then the image will actually be 2D, even if you have the 3D slider all the way up. Which makes me =D

I've been playing this a little bit now that I've got my JP 3DS. Some thoughts:

  • The game is really hard on the VN side of the VN-versus-adventure game spectrum, as expected. Thus far the only controlling of characters I've done is decisions and QTEs.
  • Graphically, I'm a little surprised at how messy it can look, given 3DS was the main platform. The biggest thing is that there's pretty much no anti-aliasing, even with 3D off.
  • On the plus side, it has an in-game screenshot function, which is nice.
  • The game's absolutely packed with references to sci-fi and time travel works, both fictional and real. Thus far, Heinlein, Clarke, and Einstein have been name-dropped, as well as a bunch of others I can't remember.
  • It's a pretty hard read, in terms of Japanese skill. Much more difficult than AAI2. Then again, I'm a lot more familiar with legal terms in Japanese than quantum physics ones.
  • You can jump around the timeline whenever, like in VLR, but it feels a bit useless thus far, since finishing one scene moves you to the next for a different character automatically. You use the timeline to unblock 'time stops', which are sort of like VLR's scenario locks, but at least thus far all the time stops I've encountered require you to just immediately go to a new scene that only opens after you hit the lock anyways, so it's not exactly a challenge to figure out what to do.

Random screenshot go.

I've been holding off buying Time Travelers actually. Also because the game still goes for quite some money secondhand, but also because I really loved Ishii Jirou's 428 (and I'm having fun with Machi too ATM), but the switch to a graphical presentation of the story kinda scares me. The writing (narration etc) was great in Ishii's previous games, which is naturally moved to the background now because of the way the story is told in TT.

Though I've been hearing good things about the game. Especially about the music.

Yeah, I forgot to mention the music. It's pretty strong overall (I actually snagged the soundtrack a few months ago). There's a fair amount of forgettable tracks, but there's also some really great ones, both on their own and in the game. Four of the characters (Mikoto, Hina, Shindou, and Ressenchiman) have awesomely cheesy vocal songs for their themes, but Shindou's probably takes the cake - it's got what can only be described as porno sax.

Okay I lied, BP you may want to start playing because it looks like I'm going to be spending a good amount of my Thanksgiving Break playing this. This game is surprisingly addicting. I'm up to 16:15 in the timeline (a little into the third chapter).

Spoiler: Spoilery (thus far) theories
So my guess as to what's going on with the five Mikotos is that they're actually one Mikoto going through the events of the game and looping back at some point. They keep referencing other storylines that have happened/have yet to happen and things like that, plus they've all got the exact same phone (which keeps cropping up in the plot since they keep getting each other's calls).

If I had to guess the order, it looks like (Yuri/Shindou - can't figure out which comes first)'s Mikoto -> Ressentiment's Mikoto -> Kamiya's Mikoto -> Hina's Mikoto. But that's just what it looks like so far. And I could be way off the mark, plus I've barely seen Ressentiment and Hina's Mikotos.

Also, lots of interest in the Cylinder Lab. And if the explosion in the intro caused the Lost Hole, why are Shindou/Hina/etc. that age in 2031? My guess is the accident happened in 2031, but timey-wimey meant the explosion went back to 2013 and changed history, and when it gets to be when the original accident happened in 2031 shit's going to go down. That might be what (Shindou's) Mikoto's watch is counting down to. And Shindou clearly knows more than he's letting on to the player, so I'm guessing he knows it as well.

Also, Skeleton is so clearly Shunsuke (I think that was Hina's boyfriend's name) it's not even funny. And my money's on him and Hina being Mikoto's real parents.

Even if I am dead-on with all of these I'm still eager to keep playing. I get the feeling this game isn't so much an "unravel the plot" as VLR or 999, but more about the journey.

Edit 11/22: Played a bunch of this while on the road today, stopped at 18:00, which incidentally seems to be where the game shakes up the game flow a bit.

Spoiler: Gameplay details
Previously, like I said, despite the flowchart you pretty much followed a linear path through the game, and even Time Stops were solvable just by going to a newly opened section. Now instead I've got a new character select screen, and it looks like once I start playing as a character it'll stick to their story until I jump to a different character's story or hit a Time Stop - but said Time Stop will require some other character's scene. Feels much more VLRish now.

Played partway through 18:00~19:00. Gameplay has indeed been shaken up a bit.

Spoiler: Details
So like I said, you start with a character select screen rather than the time travel chart. Sure enough, once you start that you stick with that character until you hit a Time Stop or go to the time travel chart. Now, the interesting thing is that now in addition to Time Stops, there are "Time Locks". These are hard blocks on a character's progress which you unlock by doing certain things in other routes. Unlike Time Stops, you can't get any hints as to what to do, and it's not just a case of changing a decision in the locked segment or doing a newly opened segment, since the characters' stories now advance independently.

To put it in VLRish terms... a Time Stop is like a Game Over, while a Time Lock is like a scenario lock.

Also, Shindou is awesome.

I picked him out as my favorite from the 20 minutes that I played. Glad I picked right xP

Yeahhhhh sorry. It's Thanksgiving Break and I've had long car trips, so I'm almost done. It's not a very long game - I'm up to what I think is the final hour in the game's timeline and I've only clocked about 11 hours total.

Really great game, though, and it sucks it's almost certainly not getting localized. I'll have to replay in a year or two when (hopefully) my scientific Japanese is a little stronger, since I'm missing the nitty-gritty of some of the more sci-fi plot points.

EDIT: Finished, clocked about 13 hours (though there's some postgame stuff as well). Overall, I did enjoy it a lot; my main objection is that the plot is a little predictable if you're a fan of sci-fi/time travel plots. The game also doesn't really use the timeline in an interesting way until the final few chapters, which is a shame.

Spoiler: Spoiler comments
Unfortunately for me, my limited technical Japanese means I missed the explanation for why there were 5 Mikotos running around. I think what was happening was that Mikoto was automatically getting put back in time when it got to 20:00, and we just don't see her do the first five loops. Though it's kind of unclear as to if the Mikoto we play as for the final chapter is Ressentiment's or not; she's got the same outfit, but we don't see her doing any of his plot points (but we do see her visit Yuri on the roof). Derp, nevermind, they've got different outfits. My mistake.

The plot wound up just about as I'd expected it, between Shunsuke being Skeleton, he and Hina being Mikoto's parents, Hina being the one to save the people in the rubble 18 years ago, and the timeline being stuck in a loop, but I blame that on me reading too much time-travel stuff. It was still pretty enjoyable, though. It does rely on time loops in the end a little overmuch, though.

Oh, and I will admit I did not see blue-hair-girl being a robot. I thought she'd turn out to be future Mikoto or something.

Guys... I haven't seen any coverage of it in any major western gaming outlet since, I dunno, TGS 2011. Considering the game's not precisely a critical or commercial success in Japan... and it's a very Japanese-looking game... I don't... I don't see it faring well in the west. Unless, I dunno, we try to create awareness ourselves?

Maybe we can start a campaign ala Operation Rainfall? Y'know? Operation Time Travel? Get the word out on this game? Who knows, it just might help a bit.

In any case, I hope I'm wrong, and Level-5 is considering a localization. This game has intrigued me since it was announced.

Oh wow. Shindo is such a boss.
(I've only done his first scene, but... wow.)

Music is really good, too.

Is it just me, or does... erm... Shinichirou? The guy in the science club that isn't Yuuri or Masato. Anyway, is it just me, or does he look a lot like a young Nick? :o

Anyway, I have a theory...
Spoiler: Theories
Okay, so... I think Skeleton (although he technically hasn't been introduced yet ^^" Just saw the name in a random blurb about it on some website a while ago) is Hina's fiancee/husband (forget which) from the intro. I think Hina's baby is Mikoto, and (as established) Mikoto's dad is Shindo; Hina was cheating with Shindo, and he's the father of his baby. So in the end, Skeleton lost everything--his child, his wife (both b/c she time-traveled and because she cheated on him), his best friend, his job (considering it went kablooie). I'm... not 100% sure what he's trying to do, but... It seems like he's sending people who have "lost" stuff those terrorism kits; I think the pills he gave them makes the person crazy. (You gotta be crazy to do terrorism like that.)

I think the asplosion from the Lost Hole gave people in the area time-traveling powers. Hina was there, Shindo was there, Mikoto (if she's Hina's daughter) was there, Skeleton (if my theory about his identity is right) was there, Kamiya (if I understood that flashback correctly ^^") was there. LosersuperheroguywhosenameIforget may or may not have been there... don't know yet. And I dunno about Yuuri... I don't think he'd be born yet... He could've been in his mother's belly, but the only pregnant woman in the area was........... I still think Mikoto is Hina's child, and I'm just missing some info for Yuuri xP

And the multiple Mikotos seems pretty easy to explain with time traveling. The Mikoto from Kamiya's timeline then goes to Hina's timeline. I'm not sure about the order of Shindo or Yuuri's Mikotos, though... (Although they might just be the same Mikoto; haven't checked in with Yuuri in a while, so it's possible that Mikoto got Shindo's text right after we left Yuuri. If I had to definitely say, though, I'd say Shindo's Mikoto is the first one; she doesn't seem to have any idea what's going on, and IIR(and understood xP)C, at the beginning of Yuuri's scenario Yuuri was liek "why do you want to kiss all of a sudden? o.O" and Mikoto was liek "It's not 'all of a sudden'... although you haven't realized it yet."

I like how it seems that Mikoto is the Main Main Character, but she isn't one of the playable protagonists. I also really like how they use the phrase "Time Stop".

Also... lmao, they really like to have fun during the bad ends xD
