I've been wanting to buy Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney when it comes out in ten days, but I haven't heard amazing things. Is it worth getting? Positives and negatives? Thanks <3

Also side-convo, think it'll come out on iOS like Dual Destinies?

Doubt the iOS thing, Phoenix might be accustomed to iOS but PL vs AA is handled by Level 5 and I don't think they let Layton on iOS (other than the spin off Layton brothers).

Though yeah it's worth getting the fantastical setting really makes for some unusual cases and while it's pretty easy to pinpoint the culprits in each case the ride along to the end is pretty spectacular. The new systems for interviewing mob witnesses are also pretty fun I felt, really changed the experience and made court feel a lot more dynamic. There's also a lot of little nice touches that really ramp up the production value, such as every character's (even minor ones) "interjections" being voiced, the implementation of voice acting for momentous testimonies and confessions as well really bring the court to life.

The plot holes are pretty minor issues. It's still a solid Shu Takumi game, so you ought to give it a try. The Ace Attorney side of the game is all kinds of classic if you're into that, but the mob/mass cross-examinations are what give the courts a completely different flavor. The investigation parts are played like the Layton games, puzzles abound and everywhere when you talk to people. The core mystery is written pretty well too, but hey, that's Takumi's work as well. And the cutscenes are among the most vivid of moments in the game.

This is just my opinion, but I do feel the puzzles are pretty easy compared to those in previous Layton installments (aside from Azran Legacies) and aside from the main four, the rest of the primary cast comes off as a bit bland. It's not the most interesting of Layton games I've played, but at least the minor characters are an incredibly diverse cast.

And as some random trivia, "Son of a witch" is a thing.

You thought Barnham was... bland too, Ruby?

On-topic, there are plot-holes depending on how strict you are about accepting certain things within the boundaries of a story, with that said, I'm not one of them and I don't consider whatever weaknesses the plot had to have anything to do with "plot-holes". It's an amazing ride for sure. When everything is seen and done I think by far the majority who plays this will have a feeling of "wow, what a game!", and like Rubia says, it's a good "Takumi-written" game. Characterization is excellent through and through, the mystery is great, twists and turnabouts are as good as ever and there's a certain something about Takumi's writing style and narrative "tell" that is just so unique and it makes everything very captivating to read through.

Also, production values are higher than ever. If you thought Dual Destinies was a step up in cinematic feel for the franchise, this one kicks it up an extra notch, I thought.

Bland like Klavier, but at least has an awesome dog.

Nah, it's not like that. I really did like Barnham at times, especially some moments out of court, but whenever we face off against him, I don't feel like there's anything particularly defining about him. Yes, he's driven toward finding the truth and isn't easily manipulated by his superiors, but other than his entire "soldier's honor" persona, I can't really take to liking him as much as I could have.

But enough of that. I wasn't kidding about those vivid moments. They're worth a watch and then some.

I think they made the puzzles less difficult for those Ace Attorney only fans who have never even seen a puzzle before. And perhaps Level-5 just decided to make them less difficult because not only are you solving puzzles: you're in court, you're investigating, you're searchin' for dem hint coins, and focusing on the "who dunnit" more than the "OMG THIS PUZZLE HERE WILL CAUSE ME TO EXPLODE" stuff.

And as for charachters? I wholeheartedly agree, with an exception for Barnham and his dog.
