Remember how I told you that the file came out to 800kb?
I was using the wrong algorithm. I tweaked it, and using 4 color compression it's now 44kb. 1/20th the size of the original.

For VMs you need a good dual core processor (Id prefer an Intel Core 2 Duo or an AMD 5000+) - Quad Cores are Perfect - or you make a switch system with an extra external HDD - 2 PCs ,1 screen, 1 Keyboard, 1 Mouse, 1 Harddrive, 1 Switchbox.

And Yoshizu, I've had it with Windows and bog-standard computer components. I'm going to sell my laptop AND my dual-core computer (which currently isn't working but can likely be fixed) to get a good bit of money towards a powerful iBook or something. Or if not, as laptops are usually not powerful enough, just a Mac...

Anyway, this is all a real shame to me as well. I really want to continue Phoenix Write tomorrow. 
I might just install XP again (I'm tired of having to go back and forth because of stupid Microsoft though), but I am considering Ubuntu Linux. (At least until I can afford a Macbook Pro. I do hate the Apple adverisements but I think I'm giving in.)Yoshizu, Ubuntu is probably pointless on this laptop for running VM Windows XP too, right?
3.2ghz processor, 1GB RAM, 128mb Geforce Go 5100 card...

Good news everyone - I think I've found the root of the problem, and it doesn't surprise me much. It seems I have faulty RAM. The BSOD IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL refers to when it's trying to find RAM addresses that do not exist, I think. Having faulty RAM can cause this. This is my laptop supplier's fault. I already had bad RAM from him once. Because he's a sneaky bastard, he's probably going to get away with this and I'm going to have to buy a new 1GB of RAM and hope it sorts the problem. I'm low on cash but I'll see what I can do.Thought I'd also say it was the Windows Vista RAM checker that checked my RAM for me. Unlike XP, Vista has this feature and it does it at start-up if an error has occured. When the test completed I was told my RAM definitely seems faulty. Even if I can fix this, I still want a Macbook Pro when I get a job.

It'd take a lot of complex work to get it working on a 320x240 screen. I'll try when the time comes.Yoshizu, that was probably an iBook. The Macbook Pro uses an Intel Processor, so I can run Windows, Mac and Linux on it. This is getting rather off-topic.
The part on-topic is that having access to all three operating systems should make it easier for me to get it working on Mac and Linux. Gerkuman, that problem's not really laptop-specific. It could happen on a PC too. I am strongly against downgrading to Vista. Save yourself some money and stick with XP. If new RAM fixes this then I'll stick with Vista, but only because I have everything set up like I want it.

I suppose the only way I'd know for sure is to try it, but since It'll be a while before I need an upgrade, it SHOULD have the Service pack by then ^_^ (XP was apparently horrible, until the serivce pack came out, then it became excellent. Perhaps Vista will be the same :) )

Vista is absolute shit at the moment. The backwards compatibility is horrible, and it technically shouldn't even be CALLED Windows because the original code and programming that was present from the days of 3.11 all the way through XP isn't there anymore.

In production since Feb 2000, it's always been planned to be Vista's successor (which beg's the question "Why make Vista then?"). It was recently revived on Vista's release date, and it's planned release date is 2009...two years after Vista, one year after XP support ends...

In all honesty, i'm still a Vista hopeful. Of course, i'll only update once everything is fixed and it's imperitive to do so, but i'm a Windows fanboy anyway. Better the Devil you know, I guess.
BTW, just one question. It is, once again, about larger resolutions and i'm sorry if this bugs you but it's just a random thing which comes to mind.
I feel from your previous posts that you assume i'm saying to let everyone choose their own resolutions (as you would in MMF). This is not the case at all. What I was getting at was maybe having two resolution options: DS Size, and 640X480.
640X480 is a common screensize for homebrew games, particularly with RPG Maker XP. It's a widely accepted screensize because it works well on all commonday screensizes (usually 800X600 and up). You could provide two subfolders within every section (Background, Characters, etc) for each screensize, and then the appropiate ones are loaded up depending on which screensize is chosen by the user. Of course, these'd simply be resizes at the time (default graphics and such), but if you're allowing the user to alter the graphics they could make their own for the larger screensize.
I'm sorry if this is a bother, I just want to make sure the idea was clear with no mis-understandings. I do kinda have high hopes for the ability to create a PW fangame at a larger resolution, and currently your program looks to be the more favourable of the two (in my eyes anyway).
If you want to accurately see what a 640X480 PW would look like, I posted a mock-screen in my sprites topic (testing a Poser character) here:

I know 640x480 is very common. As you likely know, double PW's size is 512x384. If I made it 640x480, without anti-aliasing the sprites would be pixelated. (I guess that's where alpha channels come in, but it's rather complex.) So I'm considering letting the user create a border to go around it, so it will be 640x480.
As for allowing both standard and DS sizes, it would be a bit fiddly, don't you think? I'd like to add it, but for the DS size, all the graphics would have to be resized and a lot smaller... and there'd be a lot of work to do with the co-ordinates for placing the sprites. If the user wanted to have standard and DS-style sizes, not only would he/she have to import new, smaller graphics, but he/she would also have to change the co-ordinates of everything, therefore modifying the actions (in fact, I'd need two sets of actions), and... bleh. In short, it can be done, but it'd be a lot of work and would severely increase development time of this program.
DS size, that's what MB's case maker is for...

But anyways, in my previous post, please mentally replace all instances of "DS screensize" with "Phoenix Write screensize". ^.^
What if you just forget alternate screen resolutions for now and just concentrate on making the program the best it can be? =D Then once that's out for a while and everyone's warmed up to it, perhaps if demand is high enough you could perhaps maybe try and make a larger screen one (but only if demand is high enough)?

So. If I understand this corectly, your game screen will be set for 512x384. However, we will be able to import sprites at their original screen size, as if it was 256x192?
Because if we had to import sprites with 512x384 resolution, it would be a pain to have to resize all the sprites/animations, just to work for this size.
I would unserstand why you would have an option to import sprites at 512x384 for high depth resolution style sprites, but it probably won't work for regular PW sprites with standard resolution of 256x192.

Yes, I would like to do this now but I've heard it's too slow with Linux. Oddly, since Vista checked my RAM for errors and reported the RAM's bad, I haven't gotten another BSOD. I'm going to wait and see if I get one in the next couple of days. I still want to get good RAM for it anyway. Of course, I still want to get a Macbook in the future as well! It's possible to use Parallels Desktop for both Windows and Linux, and apparently a stripped down version of XP can often load in about three seconds.

I don't think it will be hard work to make Phoenix Write automatically scale sprites to double the size. (Well, it'd probably best to make it ask the user first.) Trust me, it works okay. If you check the old video on one of my older topics from a few months ago, it shows some Courtroom stuff at that resolution.

Still, I want this program to be made, so I'd like to be the go-between so the project can go ahead :3 (He gives the info to me, and I post it for him ^_^). If not, I'll have to find someone to continue it, because I really find it hard to use MechaBowsers Case Maker.

Honestly, if we're going to make this work, we need to create a community that rivals Court Records. Only then, will we have the chance for a big enough audience to test the program on. I'm sorry, but I'm unable to continue making such a big program and release it to twenty people - and that's it. That's not how things work. We will discuss this when we next get the chance. I believe we can make it happen. Assuming we're able to create such a community, and PWrite continues development, you'll be the chief tester.
One last thing. If anybody has an interest in helping out with the new community, add me on Messenger. Also, if you're an existing beta tester, I'm afraid those who don't join/use the new community (it will take a while to make though) will not be able to test anywhere, as I am no longer able to post updates here anymore.
That is all. Thanks for remaining faithful, everyone. (Well, almost everyone.) Phoenix Write is something I'm not willing to give up. I'm capable of making this a beautiful case creation program.

It took me 14 months, a lot of money, and constant, daily effort to build the CR community to what it is now. If you really want to start one of your own, I wish you luck. I wouldn't even mind linking to it from the CR links page, if it's something PW fans would be interested in.
But Shaun himself (and his attitude) are no longer welcome here. I think it would be best to close this thread, to help let the matter drop. I encourage those of you seriously interested in seeing Phoenix Write to completion to contact Shaun directly.
If anyone else has questions about this or any other issues on the board you can always feel free to contact me.
