Speaking of the last one: I seem to go for either obviously Canon pairings or outlandishly Crack pairings. In my view, Capcom's dropping hints in a blitz, not to mention there were SEVERAL times where they could have cut the pairing possibility off completely(or at least made it extremely difficult to make it Canon again without bending storylines and creating plotholes). Speaking of which, I think these "spots" were specifically created so that some people would go "Aww, Maggey, don't hate Gumshoe! D:" and therefore fall in love with the pairing--no pun intended--to kind of "prepare" them for when it becomes canon. Actually, I'm pretty sure I'm thinking almost exclusively of 3-3 when I type this, but...still...
At first, I felt kind of awkward around the pairing, mostly because I saw nothing around the two, and there was the age difference, and...it just seemed kind of wrong to me. Not to mention I'm kind of repelled away from not-yet-happened-but-has-a-strong-chance-of-becoming-Canon pairings(maybe because I'm afraid of the annoyance that will come when the Shippers rub the newly-confirmed pairing in my face? XD). Also, if I'm attached to certain characters enough, I seem to be AGAINST the possibility of a pairing with them(Gumshoe has become one of my favorite characters recently). However, I tried investigating a bit more on it, to see if I could see the people's attraction to the pairing...
All I saw was "It's sweet!" and "It would be nice! It might even be Canon!!" And sure, I saw Capcom dropping SOME hints, but now that I had seen some of the reasons--which were more helpful than I originally thought--I began to see how they were trying to plant these "pairing seeds" into people's minds...I mean, really--even on the "GS Meets Orchestra" album, Gumshoe and Maggey are on the same album cover. Gumshoe is getting whipped by Franziska(I could also list the possibilities why Capcom would be hinting at GxF, but it's far less to be Canon XDDD), and Maggey is looking at him, concerned. Firstly, why is GUMSHOE getting whipped? More importantly, why is MAGGEY looking at him, concerned? There have been no outlandishly obvious hints as to Maggey being attracted to Gumshoe, but why is everyone else oblivious? This situation therefore centers around Franziska, Gumshoe, and Maggey--but more importantly, Gumshoe and Maggey! Also, about the front covor of the album--the first one I mean--all the main characters are there as well. However, the second one seems to have "secondary main characters". I was about to argue "Gumshoe is in the second one instead of the first one because Capcom wanted to group him with Maggey, even though Pearl is more of a minor character", but then I realized Edgeworth was in the second one...Well, still, it's something to consider...
Well, if we're talking about "grouping via Official Art", the large official "Picnic" art(with the cherry blossoms everywhere--it's the largest of its kind)also counts. Many "likely Canon" pairings are in there(MiaxDiego, EdgeworthxFranziska, but then it starts getting obscure when it comes to MayaxLarry and Phoenix/Pearl XDD)--including Gumshoe and Maggey. I suppose it could be argued that "Because Gumshoe and Maggey are working together to reel the fish in, it symbolizes blahblahblahblahblahblah" but that's stretching it a little, perhaps. XD Even though I WAS going to say "marriage"...
..........I think I went a bit deeper into this than I should have. XD
Nevertheless, it was fun, and I think the overall reason why I like it as a pairing is because Capcom designed it to be "cute" and it will(likely)become Canon soon.

The two characters are both so unlucky in just about everything - Maggey keeps getting framed for murder, Gumshoe keeps getting his pay cut... although I didn't really see much between them until 3-3. That's the case that "canonized" the pairing for me. I felt responsible for making sure that they wound up together

I agree with you so much. Though I don't dislike "semi-canon" pairings, and I wouldn't say I don't tolerate it, because I don't dislike the pairing, but I don't see the appeal. I like Gumshoe and Maggey fine, but as Croik said, there's no conflict so I find it a bit uninteresting. And what Croik said is why I usually dislike semi/canon pairings. I feel the same way about Ron/Dessie. Sometimes though I dislike it because ingame it can be taken over the top [Ron's additude is WHY I dislike Ron/Dessie] or become too sappy. I don't like too much conflict either, if it's a ship we're talking about and not smut, because then it won't work, but not enough conflict is not only unrealistic and makes the person writing it look immature and ignorant about human relations, but it's ummm boring. It's virtually impossible for two people to be together for so long and have NO conflict -- it's why teens hate their parents.
Plus, I don't know how to explain it, I can't see it. They just don't look like they go together. I know that sounds like a shallow reason to dislike a pairing, but that would be a good explanation as to why there's no fanart of them. That and the fact that there's already a distinct lack of het fanart compared to yaoi. I don't like trying to see it. I would rather not elaborate on that, though.

Below is my reasoning as to why I feel that way and why I think so many others feel that way too (though I admit I'm no psychologist so I may be wrong)...Spoiler: First three games, also cut for "Wall of text"

My first reaction to Gumshoe's crush on Maggey was, "Daaaawwwww!!! Gumshoe has a crush on Maggey. >.<"
One of the only canon ships I support. But maybe because it's not cliche...Since we find out from the get-go that Gumshoe loves Maggey and he doesn't twiddle his thumbs about it, he actually does something about his feelings.
And even though Maggey was in a relationship with another man at one point, he stuck by her side through thick and thin unselfishly. Not a lot of people have the strength to do that.
And case 3-3...The lunchbox! And Gumshoe was so sweet!
