x is my favourite pairing thus far, after finishing Ace Attorney. I wouldn't say they're mad head-over-heels about each other like some fans portray them at times, but they click well. The bits of subtext-interactio they have together just makes me smile.

Well, in my mind is pretty goddamn lesbian, and I think the game DOES support that--of course, it's never confirmed either way because it's not what it deals with; she's not confirmed straight nor is she confirmed gay or bisexual (But there's an entire thread dealing with this in Kurain so I'll say no more).

I don't... quite know what you're talking about. If two characters would fit together that happen to be both male or both female, how is it any less legitimate a romantic possibility than two characters who would fit together that are male / female? I'm not quite following you here.

x - You know what's worse? I actually GET that pairing. Both are in the same situation (which is spoilery even if it is for the first game, so no), but both have different reasons for doing it. I just y'know, don't like it.

x anyone - 'cause I don't believe in romance using Matt. And since a relationship is based on trust... note that I don't dislike Mattfic. I just dislike the idea of him being in a relationship that's reciprocated.

x - Subtext aside... let's face it, Maya's supposed to be 17-18-19, IIRC, and she just doesn't act like it. If she had bouts of maturity (which she DOES... fortunately) that didn't fall flat when compared to her other scenes, maybe I could think of Phoenix going for her, but the way the game handles it... Phoenix likes her as a friend... and so does Maya, but if one would groom the feelings for a relationship, it would be Maya and not Phoenix.

I'm generally offset by many of them, simply because they're usually random, badly stretched, and never give any sufficent basis; it's as if many of the "followers" (and it's not my wish to try and insult anyone here, this is civil) are simply 'shipping' for the sake of it.

/ From how much hype and support I heard of it before getting Justice For All, I had thought there was a really emotional moment between the two.

/ - From the story between them, I predicted and groaned in my mind at the expectation of several, several fans picturing and desiring them to get into each other's pants (though not sharing that zealousness myself). It's like reading an orange square as a red rectangle; it wasn't what one may interpret it as, but something of a different, less "colourful" nature, so to speak. It was an awkward friendship so to speak, after-- That, and it's garnered so, so much attention. If all the fanarts/stories were in the forms of armies, the world's strongest nations would be overwhelmed.

First of all, to get this out of the way "PHOENIX WRIGHT PAIRNGS, SERIOUS BUSINESS LOLOLOL". I "dislike" these couples because I don't believe in them. But that has nothing to do with the people that like these couples. Anyone is free to like or dislike whatever they want for whatever reasons they want. Also, no matter what the couple, I'm always interested in well-crafted IC fanfiction. Just because I don't "like" these couples doesn't mean it's absolutely impossible for them to be done well, and if they are, I'm willing to read and enjoy.

My thoughts always get a little bit muddled when I try to explain why this couple doesn't do anything for me, so please bear with me.

I think the Gumshoe and Edgeworth interaction, as it is right now, is cute and funny. When you add romance into that equation, however, it quickly stops being "cute and funny" to me. This is for a variety of reasons. For one thing, there are a lot of issues to a GumEdge relationship that I have never seen throughly addressed. One of the big ones is the fact that Edgeworth is his superior. Stop and think about what that means for a second. It's not just a matter of Edgeworth bossing him around and making him get files, Edgeworth controls his standard of living. Edgeworth controls his salary. This is the butt of many jokes in the game, but, well, it stops being so amusing when Edgeworth is basically in such an unequal position of power that he is condemning someone he supposedly loves romantically to living below the poverty level.

There is also the way Edgeworth talks about Gumshoe. I laughed when he got Gumshoe reinstated on the force by telling them he was too dangerous to let back on the streets. But rather like Phoenix's comments on Maya's mental age, that becomes less funny when you think about it in the context of a romantic partnership. Does Edgeworth respect Gumshoe? Does he value his opinion as a person? I think it's obvious that he cares about Gumshoe's well-being and depends upon him as a part of his job but does he ever seem place value in what Gumshoe says like Maggey does in 3-3? I don't mean that to sound harsh. Gumshoe is a valuable subordinate. Edgeworth feels a sense of responsibility towards him, and I strongly believe, appreciates his loyalty. But that is not the same as respecting him as a person or respecting the job he does. Also, would Gumshoe ever challenge Edgeworth? Because, hell, Edgeworth does need to be challenged sometimes. Even Edgeworth v2.0. I just don't think I can ship a couple that is so lopsidedly based on one partner's adoration and the other's...well, appreciation of a few key aspects of the other's character.

Gumshoe is probably the character that is the MOST sensitive to Edgeworth's feelings. This is clearly shown by the fact that he wants to go check on Edgeworth when the earthquake hits in 1-4, while Phoenix is all "LOL INVESTIGATION PHASE LET'S GO MAYA". But, what impact does that sensitivity have? Edgeworth and Gumshoe had been working together for a number of years up until that point. Did Gumshoe's caring help Edgeworth with his problems? Did it make him inclined to be a nicer person? Isn't it more likely that Edgeworth just sort of...shoved it aside?

Going back to "issues". I mentioned I just can't see GumEdge as entirely cute and fluffy. There are a lot of obstacles in their way. Both men, both coworkers, one is the other's boss, standards of living are completely different... I'm sure there's even more. But, you know, those in and of itself don't make the couple bad. But rather, I have trouble getting a picture in my mind. How does Gumshoe react to all those problems? How do you neutralize those problems so that the couple can continue? I really don't know. I wouldn't know where to begin.

I don't blame people for liking it. But due to my tendency to overthink everything, I...can't really buy it as a viable pairing. To really make it work, I think you would have to change the characters too much for me to appreciate it. Part of what I love so much about Gumshoe and Edgeworth is their current interaction. Take that away and I'm not sure how I feel.

I've gone over this a lot of times, in various ways. I've brought up the fact that their day-to-day relationship in the games doesn't become more romantic after the events of 2-4. I've brought up the fact that Phoenix can be rather dismissive of her in a way that makes sense if he views her as a younger sibling or as a close friend, but is offputting if you think about it in romantic terms. To be exact, the way he often inwardly remarks upon her childishness or lack of maturity.

What I would like to focus on this time is what the game is actually saying about them as a couple. Many people have picked up on the game remarking about them in a romantic context. Pearl does it. Larry does it. Are the games hinting at something? No, if anything they are addressing and disproving something. Here's why I say that. When you want to portray two characters in a almost-but-not-quite romantic relationship there willb e certain INDICATORS on the part of the writing. SOME of those indicators exist for Maya and Phoenix. The "person closest to me", taken out of context, can be read as romantic. Pearl's insistance upon them being together. BUT! The biggest thing that is missing is from Maya and Phoenix themselves, and that is why I can't buy them as a couple.

I'll use what Larry says about them in 1-4 as my example. When he questions Phoenix about their relationship status, Phoenix instantly responds negatively. He is surprised that Larry even brought it up. What important thing does that tell us? Well, it tells us that Phoenix doesn't even see Maya in those terms. The idea of a romantic relationship with Maya is shocking, strange. He's not reacting in a "how did you know?!" way, he's reacting in a "Where did that come from?!" way.

So, what about Maya? Maya's reaction here is veeeery interesting. This is where "indicators" come in. We've already established that Phoenix doesn't look at Maya and think "potential romantic partner". If Maya DID feel romantically inclined towards Phoenix, then why does she also go out of her way to clarify that there is nothing between her and Phoenix? If Maya was harboring a crush, it's much more likely for the game to have her get annoyed or hurt over Phoenix's immediate and complete dismissal of the idea. Instead, she laughs it off. It's the same way with all other possible indicators on her part.

That's what leads me to believe that far from the game encouraging Phoenix/Maya, it is discouraging it through addressing the idea and having Phoenix and Maya clarify the non romantic status of their relationship in many, many different ways.

This will actually be a quick one. Some have said they view the airport scene as romantic. While I think anyone is within their rights to see it that way, the mere idea that it is supposed to be indicative of romance between the von Karma siblings CREEPS ME OUT.

Here is why, in a nutshell. Familial and romantic relationships are different. Yes, this is obvious, but I think it bears repeating. If the scene is taken in a familial context, it is sweet and touching. It shows that both of them understand the other, and that they can communicate with one another on a comfortable level in a way that they struggle with when it comes to the rest of the cast. Taken romantically, it becomes a creepy scene of emotional blackmail in which a man, when faced with the prospect of the woman he love's pain and suffering, CHOOSES TO TURN HIS BACK ON HER AND SAYS "FIND YOUR OWN ANSWER". When you are part of a family, you want to encourage growth. Sometimes that means being harsh and stepping away, knowing that your loved one will understand. But with romance...you support one another. There is no "WE will get through this together" in that scene. There is "I know you have the courage and strength to find your own way". Which is a beautiful message for a brother to give to a sister, but not such a beautiful message for someone that is supposed to be in love with this person.

That, to me, is why I can't read that scene as romantic. At all. And the thought of it, unless you are doing something rather dark with the possibility, churns my stomach.
