According to like, page 33 or uh... page 100 ish of this thread or something Because it's the week when Turnabout Reunion(supposedly the shippiest case) took place. Doesn't seem to be a thing that has actually caught on, though...

As a former shipper, I have to say it was all the feels and the subtext. And the fact that Phoenix based a career move on a nice deed Edgeworth did for him when they were children, and resolved to save him from the bad path he was going down, despite the fact they hadn't spoke in 15 years. And then all of Phoenix's butthurt and feeling betrayed by Edgeworth's "death" in JFA.
But later on, I realized there are a whole lot of feels and a whole lot of subtext involving Phoenix and other characters. Err... not to imply Phoenix is a whore or anything
but it caused me to step back and reevaluate their relationship. There is a fondness there, but I see it as a bromance more than a romance. It's awesome how they have each other's backs, and I enjoy seeing their partnership play out in the courtroom.Now, Phoenix tends to be a very passionate person in that he doesn't hold back with his emotions, so it can make it difficult to get a read on how he truly feels about someone. He goes above and beyond for all of his friends... it wasn't as though Edgeworth was a special case, or any more special than the ones Phoenix helped.

I liked the idea of P/E after I played the first game, although that was partly because the internet was already filled with P/E fans, so it wasn't like I came up with this idea by myself, but once I heard it it sounded like a nice idea, because it was such a good story what with Phoenix being so obsessed with saving Edgeworth and everything. Unlike a lot of random yaoi pairings (which people seem to 'ship' without any kind of canonic support) it actually does have some basis to build on. As for Edgeworth, well the canon kind of portrays him as not caring much about women. Of course that's no 'proof he's gay', the canon seems to portray him as fairly asexual, possibly due to his messed up past, but it does make it relatively uncontradictory to put him in a M/M relationship. (I don't think anyone thinks Phoenix is 'gay' but the 'gay for Edgeworth' kind of trope is used).
How did it start and get popular as in who promoted it? No idea but the fanbase certainly would have existed in Japan before the West.

Then, after all is said and done, he suddenly disappears, which makes heroine feel betrayed, especially so when she finds out he was actually fine all along.
