So he's got the foofy thing...and he likes tea. You know, there are people who like to be fashionable and like tea. I dunno. I just hate the idea of him being British. It just doesn't suit him, in my opinion. What do you think?

Edit: I agree that his voice is a big hint. I also agree that Edgey just can't be American. He's too cool to be American. Most everyone in America is an idiot. (I'm American, ftr)

His vocabulary kind of alludes to it. And he did study in Germany, where everyone learns English in a British accent. And DEFINATLY the tea. That kind of forces him to be british.
And most Americans think that people who dress in 'older fashions' come from England.
I really think that British suits him. I can't really imagine him being American though (although I can imagine him being Canadian D:)

I agree!
His voice does seem to have a slight British accent (more obvious in his "Take That") and his tea drinking habits were what convinced me that he at least spent a decent amount of time in Britain if not coming from there originally. The cravat is obviously from Von Karma as Manfred has one and Franziska wears the bow thing which is rather similar).

I had always made the assumption that he was born and raised in the US until he was adopted by the von Karmas and abruptly moved to Germany. We have nothing to prove he was born outside of the US, and the simplest answer is usually the best answer. Also, remember, he was originally written as a presumably Japanese child (Mitsurugi Reiji is about as Japanese sounding as possible) who was moved to America.
His fashion sense is clearly derived from von Karma. As for his tea drinking habit, I know plenty of people who are quite American (we're talking Midwest here) that drink tea frequently. Although, I will credit that his tea set is distinctly English looking, however considering the game was originally Japanese and we know he was living in America not Germany the tea set becomes a moot point. It's just a "western" tea set as opposed to a "Japanese" tea set. And then there are Chinese tea sets and I tell you some people take their tea quite seriously.
I'm not a big fan of the English voice acting, especially in GS3, alas, that seems to be the number one reason people have declared him British (which covers a vast cultural area). Vocabulary-wise, I had always assumed he was simply quite well educated. In high school I had someone ask me if I had been raised in England because "I didn't use slang" and "used bigger words" than most people.
I'm from Ohio. I talk like everyone else in Ohio as far as I can tell, apparently my word choice is unusual. So I definately wouldn't base his British-ness on his vocabulary and the whole 3 phrases we hear him say.
Honestly, it appears to me to be a fanon based belief because we want our gay men to have sexy British accents when they're engaging in the manprawnz? I'm pretty sure that's actually it. British accents are sexy and Edgeworth is probably considered one of the sexier male characters in the game by the fanbase..

And, yeah, I don't get why people think he's British. I mean, come on. It's not like Capcom of America gave him a voice actor who uses a cheesey British accent in T&T just to piss of/confirm the beliefs of fans or something, right?

I still think his "Take That" sounds like a completely different VA than his "Objection" even though they're supposedly the same guy.
It could just simply be that the guy who did his US voice was "out of practice"? He never had to say "Take that!" until the third game after all, and they had to record his "Objection!" voice for the first game, which was several years earlier. Or, the voice actor's voice changed during that time gap, or maybe after 3 games with this character, the director decided to tell the voice actor to put in more of an accent.. the list goes on.
In any case, I could see why some people might say his "Take that!" sounds mildly British, but I don't quite agree with that. It actually sounds a little "Engrish" to me O.o...

But I do agree with the idea that Edgeworth might have studied in the UK and throughout that period, he could have picked up a slight accent; which explains why his accent isn't that strong. I can totally picture him having studied at Oxford for some reason
On a side note, there really is a town called Edgeworth in the UK >_>;

Now that I've heard that, I'd say he's British. It's not as evident in his 'Objection!', but it sounds like Edgy's got a british accent to me.
