I'm still pretty new to the PW fandom and I must say that there is one thing that really fascinates me.
The localization of the games from Gyakuten Saiban to Ace Attorney is quite heavy with all the name changes, location changes and all the added pop culture references and jokes. The localization is really good and it just works but I'm surprised...

So far I haven't even seen one person who insists on using the original names. In all other fandoms I've seen there's usually a hoard of complainers about what have been changed for the english edition were fans will nitpick on even the slighest difference and so on and so on.

How come the PW community doesn't have this problem? What is it that makes the translation of the games just work? Please don't get me wrong, I don't even know most characters japanese names and I love the PW games to bits, It's just so refreshing (and surprising) to not see people squabble about it.

Well, most fandoms like that are anime. For an anime in japanese, they just need to go to youtube to get a sub, and then they can watch it and learn the japanese names. (Also, typically it's the bad dubs that change names, which would cause even more people to use the subs if it's so bad.)

For Phoenix Wright (and video games in general) it's a bit more difficult to get the Japanese game in English.

I think what makes PW's localization so accepted is its sheer quality: Much care is taken to make the characters true to their nature, the puns are carefully thought-out, and the script is both endearing and funny. I think that the translation, if not necessarily direct, captures the spirit of the original and makes it more accessible to a Western audience. Not to mention, as Bad Player said, few fans in Europe and North America have access or enough knowledge to play the game in Japanese and become purists about it.

That, and the English names are just...so much more natural sounding. I dunno. D: I'm so used to seeing 'Phoenix Wright' and 'Maya Fey' that 'Ryuuichi Naruhodo' and 'Mayoi Ayasato' are just really weird in my eyes.

Didn't Capcom insist on making a quality translation?
Also, some animes etc. which are localised, are edited/dumbed down for a younger audience or to reduce controversy. I'm glad they didn't try to make this a 6+ game or something [a bit hard, when there's at least one murder in every case...]
Still, I refuse to believe the game is set in Los Angeles. In my head, it's some Americanised part of Japan in the future.

I HAVE seen a few people that prefer the Japanese names, at least, for Edgeworth and Phoenix (respectively, Reiji Mitsurugi and Naruhodou Ryuuichi), but I feel like they did such a great job with it that it really doesn't matter.

I think there's a lot of unhappiness with animes because the dubbers seem to water things down, but all of the games are still strong despite translations.

Nah. It'd be easy to make it for 6+. In fact, you could make it 2+!

Instance of the Murder: Joe Schmoe was killed... by being hugged and kissed and luved to death!!! :edgy: :edgy: :edgy:

Day 1 Trial Former
:phoenix: : Did you do it?
:shoe: : Yes!
:phoenix: : Yay I win!
:edgeworth: : No wai! My plan was foulproof!
:mia: : Yay fanservice!

THE END.

Tah dah.

And I didn't want to think of it as LA, but it actually kinda makes sense... cold mountains in the north, otherwise good weather, and movie/television studios. But I also think of it a bit more as just generally the west coast, not LA specifically. (I dun like thinking of Phoenix in LA for some reason :yuusaku: )

Side note:
PW:AA1 got only a 7+ rating in Europe.
I have no clue how could it happen tho...
