This thread will cover all of the dialogue changes in the remastered trilogy for the Nintendo 3DS.

Here's the first one. There will be misquotes, send me the actual quotes later.

Spoiler: 1-2: Turnabout Sisters
Phoenix, DS:
(My heart goes out to you, Edgeworth. Not.)

Phoenix, 3DS:
(I hate to admit it, but I'm starting to feel bad for the guy...)

Spoiler: 1-3: Turnabout Samurai
Edgeworth, DS:
First, I would like to call a familiar face, Detective Gumshoe, to the stand.

Edgeworth, 3DS:
Very well. I call a familiar face, Detective Gumshoe, to the stand.

I haven't been saving ALL of them, but I've been posting a lot of them on Miiverse as I slowly make my way through both the Japanese and US versions of the Trilogy side-by-side.

Here:
https://miiverse.nintendo.net/posts/AYI ... VHwZGv6EZQ (Japanese version, original script)
https://miiverse.nintendo.net/posts/AYM ... VHhufXXHEg (US version, revised script)

There's one post on the US side where I forgot to attach the screenshot, and that was Phoenix saying "times may change, but..." instead of the original "it's the beginning of a new century, but...". Seems they made a lot of good continuity fixes to slot the first game in with the rest of the series.

There are heaps of other minor changes that I didn't screenshot (simply because going into Miiverse, posting, and leaving Miiverse takes a really long time), but they're mostly line break changes, grammar fixes, and terminology consistency fixes. For example, they've fixed every instance where "court" and "courtroom" were used interchangeably.

I can't believe the original translation was that sloppy.

Yeah, it's pretty old when you think about it. Considering that the first game was totally new to the west at that point, it's no wonder the translation is outdated and probably low-budget. It's needed a tune-up for a long time.

And at least as far as I've played and what I've seen in comparison, it's definitely a very good tune-up. They've fixed the most minute errors and inconsistencies. It's pretty nice to see an AA port finally getting some love.

So, English translation in Japanese version is still sloppy DS translation, while English version is tge one that got the English translation fixed, right?

Does the English version allow to switch to Japanese, like Japanese allows to switch to English, anyway?

Hiya! So, um, I wanted to make my own topic of this but I can't quite figure out where and how, so...
I'm making a list of ALL the changes in text (even the littlest changes like Capital letters and stuff). Currently, I've finished the first two cases. (Turnabout Sisters is so precious omg)
Would anyone mind if I placed that list in this topic? They're quite a lot, so I wanted to make a seperate topic, but, y'know, this one seems to exist already.
Sooo... Thoughts?

Thanks for all this, Richelle! It's interesting to see how the scripts have been corrected. Through my blog alone, I could detect so many mistakes over the first three games, and some were pretty bad translations. I only corrected those that seemed completely different from the original or just plain off. Of course, having the corrected Japanese script would be handy too, though I don't think it would need nearly as much work as in English, so whatever.

You're welcome! It takes quite a lot of effort, but I think it's really interesting and intriguing. I don't know, these things speak to me for some reason...

I wonder if anyone would be willing to make a list of changes in the Japanese script... Me personally is not an option, as I'm doing the English patch and I don't know any Japanese aside from a few words I learned through anime LOL

Would be interesting to see if the Japanese dialogue had any major changes, and how many changes in total, in comparison to the English dialogue though.

So the majority of these "dialogue changes" are simply grammar fixes and slight rewordings...

Ah, A lot more was changed than I thought with the HD release! :adrian:
Amazing job you guys finding them, you guys! :butzthumbs: It was interesting to see all the little changes, it makes me appreciate the localization team for taking the time to fix up all the little things in the script. :will:

I assumed it was only going to fix things like the grammatical typos seen throughout.

Oh And, a question; does the HD release come with version français, does anyone know?

The re-write is very thorough. It removed the 'Beginning of a Century' mistranslation, took out the bit in the original game where he said he hadn't been in court before and even alters JFA to make Rise from the Ashes fit into Canon.

Actually, none of those things were ever "mistranslations". The original Japanese script from the GBA version did say all those things, and at the time of its release back in 2001, there was no mention of a year either, so its setting was assumed to be set around then. I don't remember which interview it was from, but Takumi did admit that he didn't expect to write a sequel to it. It was meant as a little one-shot project from him, and was pleasantly surprised at the massive reception.

Then, when it was localized, apparently the team didn't realize their mistake when they added a particular year to the game, setting it in 2016 and thus making some earlier parts of the script seem awkward in comparison, especially that RftA, bundled into PW:AA, was made in 2005, a year after GS3 was officially released.

It was only expected that they'd have to correct these inconsistencies. I don't know if the Japanese 3DS release made the same corrections, but I think they did as well.

If anything, I hope they fixed the actual mistranslation of Phoenix knowing Larry for 23 years.

How was the dialogue changed to reflect RftA? Was it during Edgeworth's monologue at the end of 2-4?

I'm not there yet. But in 2-3 it mentions that Edgeworth participated in another case after "that case" and before he vanished.

And the 'New Century' was a mistake. The games take place in the late 2010's (two years time in fact), DL6 was stated in 1-4 to have happened in 2001. What was meant was something like a new era. Also, I'm fully aware that the other things are retcons, it's still a useful use of the localisers time.

COOL!! They really fixed those inconsistencies?? That's amazing! I remember when I replayed the games, I was always like, WAIT THAT'S NOT TRUE! But, I knew why those things were said because Rise from the Ashes was made later, and, like Rubia Ryu mentioned, that Takumi said he never initially planned on making sequels, let alone a third game when he initially wrote the first script.

And it only took them NINE YEARS!
But seriously, it's great that they finally fixed that.

Honestly? They could've done a better job with this case. There didn't change as much as in Case 2 and there still were many sentences/texts/grammatical errors that they could've tackled/changed but didn't.
Oh well. I can't wait to start on Case 4...

?? The correction seems more wonky to me :yogi:

The original is in the context of "the multiple studios are not doing well"
While the new edition is saying "the proper noun, Studios (as in Global Studios), is not doing well."

But, when you read that line, it sounds as if it SHOULD be "aren't" as in the multiple studios, rather than studios being referred to as a single entity. If the S was capitalized, then, no complaints here.

Sorry, Maybe I'm overlooking something? I dunno the correction seemed like it changed it into a mistake. :ron:

You're totally right, I thought it was weird too! There are more of these that I thought were strange...
They should've changed it to "the studio isn't" or "Global Studios isn't", but "the studios isn't" seems illogical to me...
Like I said, they could've done a better job with Case 3. Case 2 was amazingly well changed, so why not case 3? Case 4 also starts off with a lot of good dialogue changes. I felt like someone else was set on this case to change the dialogue and weren't as good at their job as the other person or something, idk... It irks me :snap:

Hmm, Hopefully the remaining cases will continue to have more fluid changes~

I'm personally curious about The case in the third game with the Tender Lender. Cause in the original, often (but not ALWAYS) when Furio Tigre said the word "you", it would say " you' " with a random apostrophe at the end. :ron: And It just confused the heck out of me ! Brooklyn accents make people say "you" with an apostrophe...? :nick:

I don't think they're actually typos. Since the game doesn't have voice-overs, it's not so easy making an accent appear via text alone. If anything, I always took those apostrophes to be a way to show that the "you" he says is cut short. It kinda works, I guess.

Yeah, its DEFINITELY NOT a typo because it happened very often, so it was clearly intentional. And yeah, I agree it must have been a way to get his accent across, but I don't understand what that apostrophe was supposed to make it sound like, so it just confused me :eh?: But yeah! A shortened "you" would make sense~ :pearl:

The apostrophe would be apt if it was supposed to be "your", but I remember questioning it everytime it came up in context, so I'm certain it wasn't supposed to be "your", but rather "you"

I am a bit sad about these two changes... I liked the older versions better.
Also, that should be "if that were the case". Bad Capcom.

To be fair, the first one is more proper in context. It does disappoint me too that we won't ever get more of Edgeworth muttering in parentheses, though it was never the case in the Japanese script, so eh.

I did not find a trilogy "I just want to know one thing" thread anywhere so I'll post this here.

I'm surprised no one has asked this: was the "The miracle never happen" typo in JFA fixed?

That was fixed in the Wii port of JFA, wasn't it? So I'm pretty sure it has been. Given how legendary it is, also.
