Apollo and Trucy do kind of feel like a younger version of Phoenix and Maya, which is sometimes too familiar, but they're still adorable. And Ema...is quite a bit different. But I actually like her better this way. She no longer feels like a Maya clone, and her love of science is still there, so every once in a while she gets the same enthusiasm and charm Ema had in 1-5.
Overall, I like the new cast a lot. But there's still a lot we don't know about the mains, and I hope they take some time to flesh out those details in the next one.

Ema did pretty much take a 180 =( I still like her, theres still a bit of her old self in her. I never really saw her as a Maya clone, since Maya annoyed the HELL outta me and Ema didn't. Spirit Medium thing ASIDE, Ema seemed more believable then Maya to ME anyway. I'm glad they brought Ema back, and I hope as the series goes on she develops even more since shes a main now. Lets see some KyouxEma lovin!! =B
I love Minuki <3 Trucy, whatever. I like the name Minuki better then Trucy =P I like her alot better then Maya.
With GS4, the new characters are all tied together in deeper ways that the original GS characters weren't. Like Apollo's mentor being the older brother on his rival prosecutor, or
And having Ema return to be the new detective, and Nick adopting Minuki. The game makes all of these connections that, in my opinion, are alot stronger and more interesting then the previous games.
Almost everyone (atleast the major characters) is connected in some form or fashion, and rather then it being cliche and boring, its super interesting.
This is all my opinion anyway, but I seriously think the new cast is very cool, alot of them being much cooler then the old cast (except for Godot, he pwnz all xD)
And having the prosectuor moonlighting as the lead of popular rock band is funny as hell. The idea at first seems lame, but its quite funny in the end.

Apollo is pretty much just as cool as Phoenix.
Trucy is as cool as Maya, and cuter.
Klavier is just as cool as the other prosecutors, and still beats out Payne?
However..
Some people don't like Phoenix's new personality. I now he changed to a hobo but is he that much unlikable personality-wise?

The new characters are also pretty flat and poorly developed (Apollo has NO in-depth character whatsoever for starters) and their motivations to do stuff is often rather hard to understand, without giving spoilerific details.
Adult Ema and our new Phoenix are both extremely obnoxious, and unfortunately you deal with them a lot.

I don't really understand any complaints about the side characters. Hamigaki may look like a freak, but I thought his personality was especially charming. Kawadzu was creepy but he was also hilarious. And others, like Takita, Koume, Makoto, and even Varan were all very memorable.
Thinking back to the first game, how many of the side characters were more entertaining than the crew we have now? You had the Bellboy and Penny, who were almost wastes of space, and Sal and Lotta were blatant, annoying stereotypes. Not to say that poor development ever has an excuse, but I enjoyed GS4's side characters, and we'll probably have more chances for them to show up and develop as Apollo's story goes on.
And I don't want to get into Phoenix again, but I will say I like Ema better as an adult than I did when she was in 1-5. At least she's not a Maya clone anymore~

Bellboy and Penny are normal, which really was a good thing. Back then, not every character needed to go by some sort of motive, and I really think GS4 could have done with some less over-the-top-not-normal characters. It's almost as if they were scared to accidentally have someone be kind of normal.
And there are enough new stereotypes characters, only they're also re-using character traits from the first few games, which obviously wasn't the case in the first.

Well Mugitsura and Lamoroir were relatively "normal", in as much as they weren't as over the top as Kawadzu or Hamigaki (and Doburoku, if you don't count his hair). And I'd still take any of the GS4 characters over Penny or Bellboy. At least they make enough of an impact that you remember them later. I think the only characters I genuinely didn't like (other than the victims you learn nothing about) were Minami and maybe Zakku.
Apollo does seem a lot more emotional and excitable than Phoenix in the first case, though...as the game goes on, he seems to become more and more like Phoenix was, which was kind of a shame. I hope that 4-1 energy comes back more in GS5.
So moe for Makoto it's funny.
