I don't think Payne is all that incompetent as a prosecutor if he's been able to stay in business for so long. He may have been beaten by Mia, Phoenix, and Apollo (although that was technically Phoenix's win), but it's not like he's totally stupid. The truth is unchangeable, so he just happened to have really no chance of winning if Phoenix, Mia, or Apollo was involved.

Actually, we could also think that since he is suck a lackluster prosecutor, maybe in his first seven years on the job he was only assigned to one case because of his lack of skill. That one case he won, surprising everybody, but that was his last case until Mia.

...But that wouldn't make sense because he wouldn't be known as the 'Rookie Killer'. And it was a funny idea too...

Think. The logical and plausible explanation is, Payne won his first seven years as prosecutor, then lost some trials, won some trials... and faced Mia. But nothing SO crushing like Mia's "Drink-the-poison-if-you-are-really-sure" thing. :youngpayne:

Payne is neither incompetent nor stupid, but:
- he often loses his confidence
- we only see him facing great lawyers
- most of his cases are almost impossible to win. In 1-1, the witness is so pathetic that he does the defense's job all by himself. In 2-1, the contradictions are so obvious that even Manfred Von Karma couldn't have convinced the judge that Maggey was guilty. The list goes on...

I think Payne lost his confidence due to the fact that he is constantly being surrounded by younger and more attractive people.

But that's just my opinion. 8D

Honestly, though, Payne has always been the comic-relief villian (to me, at least), so the fact that he has gone undefeated for so long was a bit of a shock. It's like he's become another Godot or something. What ELSE don't we now about this mysterious man?! >O

He needs to do something about his hair, though. Srsly.

I'm pretty sure Payne was talking about his LAST seven cases. As in, after Phoenix lost his badge, Payne got back his winning streak.
