The dream sequence was supposed to tie the beginning of GS2 together with the ending, making the story seem deeper. It has nothing to do with GS4. I do, however, believe there was a reference to 2-1 in 4-4.

During the MASON flashback, examine the coach in the Defendant Lobby (where you talk to Meekins) and Nick will say that he once took a nap there, and that the result was disastrous.
Something like that.

He also said that ever since then he doesn't let his clients sit on that sofa at all. Pretty funny I thought.
But yeah, if reading the developer blogs taught me anything it's that they don't always plan these games very far in ahead. Anything in PW or JFA couldn't really be an intentional reference to AJ, especially since Takumi's very first intention for the fourth game was to not have Phoenix at all.
