Meraktis open the safe and Alita shoot into it? As far as I understood it, their meeting went something like this:
Alita: Yo! Destroy Wocky's charts or else my get-rich-quick scheme will fail and Wocky's gonna kill you, too!
Meraktis: NEVA! *strangles*

Also, how exactly did they come to the conclusion that the bullet had been fired recently and related to the case?

The shooting into the safe happened the same day as the attempted strangulation and Meraktis' murder. As far as I recall they didn't prove it happened that day but stated that they could check the ballistic markings to see if they matched the Kitaki pistol and if they did the pistol was kept guarded until the day of the crime when Wocky stole it, Alita later confessed so no need for conclusive evidence.

I know that they knew it was from the gun by checking the ballistic markings, but that was only 'cause Apollo said, "She fired the gun into the safe! Check this bullet to show that I'm right!" But how did Apollo know that?

But what I'm really asking:
1. Meraktis had no intention of giving Alita the chart. So why did he open the safe?
2. Why did Alita shoot into the safe when Meraktis was opening it? (And she couldn't have been trying to shoot Meraktis. After all, she was in his office, so she would have been 5 feet away from him, and his back would've been turned, so he wouldn't have been moving around trying to dodge, 'cause he couldn't have known she was shooting)
