I'm wondering if we should think of the forthcoming GS4 like this... I've been reading on the Capcom boards that GS3 has a really amazing finale (no spoilers please ;) ) - and is a great end to the "Phoenix" trilogy. Then Apollo gets his own "trilogy" (we assume). I mean, after I play GS3 (that might not be til Christmas) should I "forget" the other games (if its true Phoenix's character is different as some have said?)

Well, officially it's a sequel. There's absolutely no doubt about that, and even if I have issues with the game, I can't really close my eyes to the fact that as of this point it's officially in continuity.

However, I can understand if people would rather think of it as an AU--I'm still writing post-GS3 fic, so... >_> And, in a way, by labeling the games under their main character's names does help make a cleaner "break" in the English language version.

In the end, I'd say do what you want, but keep in mind that the games are supposed to officially tie together.

Fair enough. My opinion could change, maybe I'll be sick of Phoenix by the end of GS3!
Could Phoenix yet make an appearance in GS5 and 6 (if there is a GS6 that is).

If you compare it to the Mega Man universe, the most likely name for AA4 is, indeed, 'sequel'. Mega Man X is a spin-off, and there are only slight hints to the original story, and Mega Man Battle Network is an alternate universe, where a slight change in previous events caused a dramatic change in how the storyline progressed. AA4 is much more tightly bound together with the previous titles, even if the production department had to force in a few connections to the old cases. It might very well have been intended to marely be a spin-off.

GS4 doesn't feel like a true continuation of Phoenix' story, because it never was meant to be. Phoenix is in because because Takumi was forced to have him in, everyone else from the previous games is missing because he didn't want GS4 to be connected to the first three games.

I don't see why GS4 can't be as much of an AU as DMC 2 was.

I took GS4 as a proper continuity, at least for Phoenix's story. As soon as I found out the circumstances of why he was in it, I stopped writing my fanfic (if you read it on the old board, you might figure out why). Until I get to play the translated GS4, I won't be starting it again. A pity... it was starting to turn into something quite brain twisting and shocking... in my head at least :maya:

DMC2 is not AU. Capcom has simply changed its position in the DMC timeline so that it's...not important. But it's still officially canon (according the last article I read on the subject).

While I see GS4 as a direct sequel, it's also the start of its own story. I wouldn't reccomend "forgetting" the old games, rather, just keep in mind that it's not as direct as GS2 to GS3 was.

Well I hope he's not TOO much like Phoenix, but I did enjoy Phoenix's sarcastic wit.

Now that you mention it. I do remember that Capcom said that DMC 2 will take place after all other Devil May Cry games, but that's it. Still I see it as more of an AU since everything from the first game was non-existant. Especially Dante's personality.

Same thing could be said with GS4. In this sense the end of GS3 could be where the timeline breaks off into two seperate timelines. Don't see why that can't be possible as well.

Only on my hard drive here... I had done five chapters... but until I find out certain information which may be divulged in GS4 then I can't go on without potentially needing to go back and rewriting bits of it. Certain parts will be clarified by finishing GS3 which I'm about to do shortly, but I had gone over certain spoilers in order to start the fanfic in the first place. Ah well... maybe in the future :maya:

I hope when GS4 is translated, it doesn't act like Phoenix's friends arent there or that games 1-3 never happened.

:larry: You're just teasing, now <wink>

Seriously, I look forward to reading it at some point - it sounds intriguing.
