If You've played the Demo(WHICH YOU SHOULD HAVE!) The Judge says "Buy Gambling is Illegal!"
PLOTHOLE!

In the Japanese Version where it takes place in City X(Possibly Tokyo), this is fine, because Gambling for Money is Illegal in Japan(As well as Massachusetts)
However! in this Here English Translation! Its been moved to California!

And I don't know if Capcom took this in account or not, But in California the Only Gambling thats Illegal is Gambling on who's going to be elected President!

I guess its safe to assume that in the time between 2008 and 2025 A Bill was passed that made Gambling Illegal in California, but I highly doubt that since Las Vegas is in California and thats the SYMBOL Of Gambling, And they wouldn't outlaw Gambling in California if it meant Losing one of their Prized Famous City's!

The Point here is that Without Assuming things changed in 17 years from Game Release, THERE IS A CLEAR CONTRADICTION PLOT HOLE IN APOLLO JUSTICE ACE ATTORNEY!!! :beef:
Kay had two daddies. Trucy had THREE daddies. Clearly Trucy is the winner.

In the game world, they can have whatever laws they want, whether or not they'd make sense in real life.

You never know what'll happen in 17 years. I mean, if the court system could mess up even quicker than that, passing an anti-gambling law would be child's play :D

Jeshi, you do realise that this is only a fictional story, not real life! So, why can't gambling be illegal in California.

Some people, eh? :yanni-faint:

Anyway, I believe the victim in 3-3 (set in 2018-ish) won the lottery before he died. Lottery ----> Gambling.

BTW "Buy Gambling is Illegal!" <--- Lovely to see that even the demo has typo's.

True...
And wasn't there a (with small word of course...) note in the JFA's (don't know did TaT had it) instruction booklet...
Something like: All the laws of this game has been imagined....and etc.
Nothing is real, but still it is!.....weird....

Not all gambling is legal in California, but I don't know the specifics off the top of my head, so I googled around. This is what I found about cardclubs (which is probably as close as I'm going to come to Nick's poker tournaments):

Quote:
Cardclubs

Cardclubs have existed in the state as long as there has been a state. State law neither specifically authorized nor prohibits these. California's gambling statutes prohibit certain types of gaming, rather than authorizing certain types of gaming. Cardclubs are legal because they have not been specifically prohibited. But only those games not prohibited can be played at these facilities. House revenues are generated by charging a seat rental fee, by time period or by hand played.

*snip*

Cardclubs in California generate a great deal of gambling activity compare to clubs in other states. It may seem surprising that California allows cardclubs. There are several reasons why cardclubs are viewed differently than other types of prohibited gaming. One reason is that the club cannot directly benefit from the amount wagered. Fees can be charged only for play. In that way, money is lost to other players, not to the house, and is more likely to remain in the community. Casinos are viewed more negatively because they, like lotteries, take money from the community. Another reason is that playing cards requires an element of skill and is often viewed differently than games of chance. Cardclubs are very different than casinos. Cardclubs cannot offer the banked games such as 21 and slot machines that are normally found in casinos. The cardclub provides services such as a cashier and dealer. Players, for a fee, can play against each other, not the house.

*snip*

Despite the construction of these new clubs, the industry profitability has been hurt. In a case over what is called jackpot poker, the clubs lost. The game was ruled a lottery, which is illegal expect when offered by the state. The jackpot was paid when two players got certain hands, hands that were not useful in winning the poker game that was the main object of play. The jackpot was incidental to the poker game. The jackpots were as high as $70,000, from which the clubs got a healthy cut.

Source = http://www.library.ca.gov/crb/97/03/Chapt5.html . Emphasis is mine. So, while cardclubs aren't agaisnt CA law, certain card games are. I haven't played beyond the demo, but it's possible that the games brought up in the case were, in fact, illegal, depending on how they were played.

(It also makes me wonder if Nick would have been considered the house, since he works for the restauraunt, which I think would have clinched the illegality of it....)

Oh, and Ace Attorney laws are imagined. :P

I think since Phoenix worked for Borscht, and another employee of Borscht was also the dealer, if they were playing for money the house would definately get a cut, and in that case probably wouldn't be legal.

But like everyone has pointed out, GS4 takes place in 2025, and crime and corruption run rampant. There's no telling what kind of laws were developed in the PW world out of necessity.

Las Vegas is (as previously stated twice) in Nevada, not California. Gambling currently IS illegal in California. I've visited that state, as well as Nevada. My family was vacationing in Lake Tahoe, and we had to cross the Nevada border in order to get to the casinos, etc. (My older sister had just turned 21 and wanted to go.) There weren't any casinos or gambling huts or whatever before we hit the Nevada border.

((If you've ever seen Back To The Future 2, they state that it was illegal in 1985 also (except in the AU that Marty traveled to, because Bif became powerful enough to legalize it).))

Misc. Fact: Did you know that they have slot machines in Nevada airports? My little cousin was like 4 and she started playing with one (someone must have left it before all their money was used up). She won about 11 cents.
I'm still alive, don't worry!

After reading that first post I was wondering if someone would pick that up. What gambling had to with LA was beyond me.

Poker? Illegal? The demo really threw me there XDD They aren't talking about casinos or underground gambling rings, the dude got killed over a game of POKER. Theres no law saying you can't get together with someone and play some poker, even if you're gambling with some cash. From what we can see it wasn't some organized crime ring, just 2 guys playing poker in a back room.

I think we're reading too much into this. This is also the JUDGE who made the comment, when he thinks of gambling casinos run by the mob may be what he associates with any sort of gambling which is why he says its illegal. He may not be thinking about just 2 guys in a back room playing cards, theres definately no law against THAT.

Oh fuck SPIRIT CHANNELING IS ACTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE. THIS IS A MASSIVE PLOT HOLE.

I'm sorry if I sound rude but your point sucks. It's clearly a fictional game and they can make up whatever laws they want tbqh. Last I checked, real trials weren't limited to 3 days of proceedings either.
