Really, he's the best lawyer ever in the context of the game yet loses his legal department to the forces of evil. Loses his career and basically ends up doing a job that he may (arguably enjoy) but is certainly not WHAT he should be doing. Guy gets a wonderful daughter but isn't married, no relationships, and all of his friends seemed to have abandoned him.

I haven't been this depressed since the ending of Evangelion.

Charles, might I suggest that you use spoiler tags next time? Thank you.

I wouldn't say that his friends has abandoned him. Maya's gone off to be the Master of Kurain, and thus has many responsibilities as being one. And thus can't really visit her good ol' best buddy. And Pearl is probably growing up and has many new things to learn, busy busy busy. Be glad that Ema Skye is still 'round.

As for Larry, Edgeworth, Gumshoe and Maggey... they're probably being busy with heck who knows. GS4 couldn't possibly fit the whole slew of previous cast members. Maybe some more will return in GS5. Who the heck knows.

Spoiler:
And maybe Phoenix wasn't interested in a long-lasting relationship, but somehow found the heart to adopt Trucy. Sure there's Iris... but that's long over I believe. Okay I haven't beaten TAT, so I may just be assuming here. But is Iris around in Gs4? No.

No, I don't feel sad at all. I'm actually happy, because this made me like Phoenix more than I did before. He has never been my favorite character but no as I can give him sympathy, I like him more.

Just because Phoenix doesn't mention what his friends are doing whenever he shows up in the game doesn't mean they've abandoned him. He would have probably kept in touch with them during the seven years. And besides, what possible reason does he have to tell Apollo, a guy he barely knows, about what his friends are doing anyway?

Not sad about it since I've played through the game.
Not even going to spoiler tag it but I'm not too sad about the way Phoenix has turned out, just another step in him growing up.

I thought looking like a hobo was the newest in lawyer fashion. Or he had taken a part-time job.

Nah, I'm joking. I spoiled myself. I want him to spoiler the topic though =D

I suppose I'm a bit sad for what Phoenix has been through, but overall I think it gives us an interesting new look at his character. Certainly his losing a job that he enjoyed so much and took such pride in is very tough, but it adds on a new layer to Phoenix's character. And as was mentioned a bit earlier, there is nothing in the game to indicate that he's lost all contact with his friends. Remember the game is done through Apollo's point of view, so for a good portion of the game Phoenix's actions are unaccounted for and therefore he could easily see his friends in that time without us knowing about it. I'm sure that Edgeworth, Maya, Iris, Pearl, and Franziska are all around, but having them show up or having Phoenix go off on a tangent to inform Apollo where a bunch of people that he's never met before are would have seemed more than a little strange.

Eh, Phoenix is only in his mid-thirties.

I don't see any reason why he couldn't become a Lawyer again.

Arguably, that's when he should have been STARTING the high point of his career.

Spoiler:
He was desperate to win a trial and foraged evidence. Got caught and I guess was fired, and maybe also felt very bad for forging evidence in the first place to the point where he can't go back to his old career.

@ Super Judge,

Spoiler:
Desperate?Felt very bad? He didn't know the evidence was forged, so how was he desperate? He's always desprate in every case he's been in. 2nd of all, he can't go back to his old career. He was disbared, never to practice law. EVER[img][/img]. Look it up.

It is proven at the end of the game that he was innocent of the forging seven years ago, so I would assume the disbarment would be lifted. I'm rather hoping that he does go back to being a lawyer, but only time will tell.

Does it explain who the real culprit was? I'd rather know because once I read a spoiler, I go crazy over it until I know everything. Bad habit I know, it's because I eat spoilers for breakfast.

After thinking a bit, I think I know the reason why the developers did this to Phoenix.

Yes. I'll tag the answer in case you change your mind.
Spoiler: Huge GS4 spoiler. You have been warned
Kristoph Gavin set Phoenix up seven years earlier.

I doubt that was it. Phoenix can only take so many cases at a time, so his being a lawyer shouldn't really effect Apollo. It leads to some interesting twists which is I assume why they did this.

Yes, it does.

Spoiler: 4-4, rather severe spoilers.
Kristoph was the person behind the forgery. He was jealous that Phoenix was chosen to be Zakku's lawyer, especially over something as frivolous as a card game so he got falsified evidence and on the day of the trial passed it onto Trucy to give to Phoenix.

She didn't know what it was though.

Well he suggests taking the bar again at the end of the game, but laughs it off.

It's unlikely.

Spoiler: Ending credits
I recall someone saying that the wording was something like "Perhaps I'll take the exam again. How hard can it be the second time through?" Or something like that. I could be wrong. That last line is meant as a joke obviously, so if he's laughing at his own clever joke it doesn't mean he's dismissing the idea. On the other hand, this is all second hand so he could be laughing the whole idea off. As I said, time will tell.

Haven't we had enough of these threads by now? :yuusaku:

Sure people are disappointed. But Phoenix himself has gotten over it fairly well. He's not married to anyone but he loves Trucy and has been making new friends. He has a steady job with steady pay. He keeps up with Maya and Ema. And through Apollo he can still participate in investigations, if only on the sidelines. He's still using his talents to help save innocent people, which is the most important part, I think.

Uh, wasn't it implied he gets most of his revenue from poker playing, and the only reason he's still a pianist for that bar is because his poker skills attract customers or something to that degree? Not exactly an honest day's work, especially when he occasionally has Trucy help him on the sidelines for the high stakes games. Plus when you think about it, I doubt he'd have that job for very much longer after the events of case 4-1.

I gotta agree with Mia, it would be nice to see him become an attorney again. You guys can't say it wouldn't be awesome to see Phoenix's new attitude in court, annoying the prosecution and witnesses. XD

:udgy: Prosecution, this is highly important evidence! How could you have missed this?!

Who knows? He may be in a relationship, but it's not mentioned. No it isn't Edgeworth, because he died of AIDS. (kidding, go check newgrounds if you want to see what I mean) It's highly impossible though, he was probably busy playing poker, doing the occasional piano song, and plotting on how to bring Kristoph down.

I would like to see Phoenix in his suit again with his beanie. :D That'd be a great thing to make fun of for the other characters other than his porcupine hair.

Even if he doesn't become a lawyer again, he can still help Apollo.
Spoiler:
He had already figured out who the killer was out of a few words from Kristoph in the first case. So his mind hasn't dulled.

@numel: It's the world of PW. Where a family can call back the dead, faces can be rearranged without any apparant scars, trials are three days maximum, and a chief police can turn himself into lightning.

Who knows if he's allowed to take the bar exam or not.

Whoops, that slipped my mind. My bad. >.<'

Still you gotta admit, Phoenix berating and pestering the prosecution and witnesses for their slipups would be epic. Makes me wonder if he'll be Apollo's aide for some of the cases that Trucy can't attend. :phoenix:

I really hope he'll be the aide for the first case of GS5.

I'm still not sure I want to see him back as an ace attorney. On the one hand, I'd love for him to return to the career he loved, but on the other hand... well:

I still don't think his being a lawyer would effect Apollo's ability to get cases. First, Apollo has at least the start of a good reputation for himself (four tough cases is nothing to look down on). Second, Phoenix really can only handle so many cases at a time (and considering the other games, he doesn't usually handle that many so his schedule would fill up quickly), so Phoenix is simply too busy and is occupied with another trial or investigation (except for brief periods where he takes time out to give Apollo advice as Mia did in the previous three games).
Spoiler: end of game spoilers
And third, he may be proven innocent at the end, but rumors are hard to shake. There could easily be people who worry about his reputation and simply don't want to take a chance on an attorney with a slightly shady background.

And there we go. Phoenix comes back as an attorney and the spotlight is still focused on Apollo.

From what I know about law down here at uni, (yes, I did ask my lecturer about this) it is assumed that disbarment is not permanent. I don't know if Japan's law system is similar to us or different but my lecturer did say that a lawyer can return to the stands if he passes the test again after a certain period of time. Being seven years since his disbarment, I do believe he might come back as Mia_Fey pointed out but I do feel that he'll most likely take the place of Mia (a mentor) in the following games or continue not to be a lawyer but doing things in the background to help Apollo.

Spoiler: Regarding GS4
I still have qualms over the Jury system that Phoenix sets up. Is that his creation or one that he collaborated with other officials of the law system?

Does a family requires sex just to make it?

Anyway, I think Phoenix adopts Trucy because of a certain someone which I won't name unless you've played it already/known by the spoiler walkthrough so yeah...
