What exactly was changed? (Besides character names and minor typos.) Was the story edited a tiny bit to cover some obvious contradictions, maybe?
And
Unfortunately I wasn't paying so much attention. I want to know if it's worth importing the japanese version.

Maybe it's because Nintendo is getting so focused on region-locking and there's no way to do that with the DS from a technical standpoint years later so they wanted America to buy the american version.

And then I bought Pokémon Ranger since I lost that game and Elite Beat Agents, so I have a lot to do
I wish I could remember things better. That's 5 games I need to play through. And on top of that, the two PMD games are coming out soon so...

No, there's no point in importing the Japanese version because it doesn't have an English version on it. As for the other games that have English versions included on the Japanese cart, their translations are identical to the American version except for a few fixed typos, And I think there might have been a minor edit for T&T. So even if there was an English version included with the Japanese version, it wouldn't be any different than what you have now.
