One of the things that somewhat puts me off is that Capcom is going more and more wild with character designs in the whole AA series as it goes on. T&T was pushing it already (Godot's visor mostly, but at least it makes sense, being in the future and all).... But seriously, in AJ.

How can human hair possibly look like Daryan's? Or for that matter, even Wocky's hair is all weird. Besides hairstyles, people's fashion too. Wesley, we all know you're a scholar, you don't have to be wearing the graduation gown all the time (and the cap even!). Even Klavier. I don't think a court of law would accept its prosecutor dressing like a rock star. (you CAN be a rock star, but at least put on a suit with shirt and tie when you're in the courtroom)

If you look back in the series, older characters actually look like ordinary people you'd see in the real world. See Redd White, April May, Bellboy, Frank Sahwit, Ini Miney. Even the more oddball characters from the past, like Sal Manella, have a character design that's convincing enough to be a real life person. (1-5, on the other hand, was made much later, and was starting to go wild already. Look at Gant and Angel Starr for example, or even Jake Marshall, or even Meekins' face [so cartoonish]. I have to say it, even though I love Jake and Angel.)

Now that I look at it, T&T has its fair share of wild designs too. Luke Atmey's hair. (and how do you get a magnifying glass stuck on your eye anyway?) Jean Armstrong... well, I suppose you can find guys like that in real life. Never mind.

Regarding Wesley, I actually find one of the alternative concept arts of him to be much, much more well-designed and convincing for his character.

Spoiler: save space, and 4-2 spoiler i guess?

The bottom right one. Keep in mind I play the game with the mindset that it takes place in Japan. (I'll never find it convincing to have a spirit channeling temple in Los Angeles, no matter how they explain it) The design at the bottom right is a guy in typical Japanese student uniform. Much more convincing than a guy wearing graduation cap & gown walking around on the streets.

I don't really like Apollo's character (not just his design)... He lacks the charisma that Phoenix had...
But I like the design for the rest of the characters in GS4 in general. Wocky looks like a stereotypical japanese gangster wannabe (you actually see people like Wocky in Japan). They are going for the unique looks for the new characters because they are running out of originality... GS series has way too many characters, if they all look like real life people, they'd have to start "repeting" some of them.

You're right I can imagine people like him around, as far as personality goes.

But with hairstyle like this?!
Spoiler: 2-4 spoiler and saving space again

I think any of the hairstyles in the black and white pencil sketches on the left would be better than what the final design is.

Honestly, I absolutely love Wocky's design. And I have seen people with hair pretty similar to Daryan's in a few Japanese shows/movies. Just can't remember what they're called. XD

The crazy outfits and crazy hair that most of the characters have is just awesome. Plus, it makes it really easy to make fun of them with fanart and whatnot. XDD And crazy designs are kind of what make characters memorable.

I love Apollo, but I'm kind of biased because I have a hardcore love for red. D:

AJ's characters take a few stylistic liberties, sure. But I don't think it's any more realistic for a grown man to have purple hair and a brilliant pink suit than it is for a punk like Wocky to try and make his hair look like fox ears. Klavier may dress like "a rock star" but he's still wearing a suit coat (a casual one, but still). He's not decked out in Karma's frilly gentleman's wear, which in a modern court of law would considered very costumey, I would think.

And Daryan... I've seen cosplay pull it off XD;; In Japan it's pretty easy to make someone look like a total punk by sticking a pomp on him, so I'm pretty sure that's what they were going for with him. Someone sent me a video just the other day of a bunch of guys with pomps about half the size of Daryan's, so it's definately possible to make your hair do crazy things. The designers just make it... a little MORE crazy XD;

Overall, I really like AJ's designs. They're colorful and dynamic and they fit the characters well.

There are real rock bands with Daryan's hair. Not as big, but yes...ginormous sausages...hanging out...

It's a thing called hair gel.

Anyway, and it's more believable that Phoenix's hair can grow naturally spiky? The hairstyles and the out-of-this-world (literally sometimes) looks is what makes up the colorful characters in the AA series. Otherwise, they might not be as lively and creative. It's a game, placed inside the Ace Attorney universe, you're not supposed to look for literal 'real life' personalities and looks. Don't be such a serious cat. These wild appearances, hairstyles, and personalities of characters is a major thing in these games.

If every made up AA character had to go by 'real life' guidelines, it wouldn't be much fun, and this thing called 'imagination' would be neglected.

Before now, I never really realized exactly how ridiculous that is. :redd:

Imagine what it would look like now to introduce a character with normal hair, a plain shirt and tie, and no insane personality quirks. They would end up seeming weirder in the context of the games than any of the characters we've seen so far. You could make the argument that the designs in AA4 are a bit more extreme than previous entries (particularly with hairstyles), but overall I don't think that's really saying much. It would be like saying how weird Speed Racer's car is when everybody else you've seen is driving the equivalent of Batmobiles. When everybody in the series is ridiculous, what's the use of trying to divide them all up even further?

My favorite thing about the series is the character designs.

Each of the characters is so memorable and funny, a few illogical things don't really concern me.

There are some things that bother me. >< I think the things that bother me are just things I'd have done differently. They kinda make sense, but I'll complain anyways.

Apollo's hair. It just...I don't like it at all. It reminds me of a clock and an owl, and not in a good way.

Winston Payne's new look. He doesn't look...he just...he's gross. >>; Maybe I should make a thread, if one doesn't already exist, about how gross he looks in this game. I bet he's slimy.

Wocky Kitaki was just a joke. Honestly...I know it makes sense, the whole fox thing, but...the design is just awful. He's just not my favorite character. I wouldn't have defended him if I had the choice. Nothing works with him.

Yeah. Those are the things that bother me the most, save for maybe Pal's face. It looks so blocky. D: But, anywho, I'm just a complainer. I would have done them differently, so I don't like them. That's probably the only reason why. XD

I think that the AA series prides itself on completely wierd character designs, on things that don't make sense realistically, etc. etc. With Spirit Mediums (IN America, I will always consider the ACE ATTORNEY series to be based in America), Frilled German Prosecutors (seems like we get a new one every year), and people like :zenitora: :yuusaku: and :godot: , you're worried about too much zanyness?

On another note, I think a completely normal character, dressed normally, would make for a fun witness in a future case. I think it would throw off Apollo to cross-examine someone who wasn't completely bat-shit insane ( :study: :pencileraser: )

It's a thing called opinion, so you don't have to be defensive or introduce me to 'new vocabs' such as real life and imagination. I know them a little bit. Just a little.

Anyway, I understand the POV from gamers and anime fans. More unique and stylistic character designs are a good touch to distinguish your game, among the crowd especially. But I am speaking from a non-gamer POV. (PW is the only game series I've played after I was done with college and didn't have any more time)

You'd only need to look at these two pages:
http://www.court-records.net/Characters.htm
http://www.court-records.net/Characters4.htm

If you don't realize the difference, I can tell you. I play the game like I watch a detective/criminal/mystery movie. And I can tell you that, to a non-gamer, I am much more drawn into/more like to want to play a game where characters look like the first 3 rows of the first link, rather than ones from the second link. (speaking strictly character-wise. In terms of whole cases, I actually think 1-1 to 1-3 are near the bottom of the list in the list of cases I like, based on the story.)

Again, keep in mind I am just posting personal opinions, please, no need to get defensive and try to prove me wrong. There is no point in proving an opinion wrong.

Well, seeing as it's still an anime styled game, I don't mind any character's design as long as they have a good story and personality. AJ was much more colourful and silly than the original, sure, but the characters were strong enough to make their design make sense.

@Canek Asdis: Payne took pride in his hair, as we saw in that one flashback case in PW3(Uhh I think it was that one. The one with Mia?XD), and then Mia blew it off. The fact that he actually has hair now (but not on the top of his head) makes his design absolutely hilarious. And I think that's why it fits. XD

@miney: I play the game like some really weird, but incredibly interesting crack fiction. I think it just makes it easier that way, hahaha. To me, AA isn't serious enough consistently to view as "a detective/criminal/mystery movie."

Buuttt anyways. Once again, I love the designs. XD Apollo's hair is nuts, but you can make a ton of jokes about it. q: And that's what I'm fond of.

I grew up watching Matt Groening's stuff, so oddly shaped and colored hair is all but normal to me at this point. =P

The only character whose design really irked me was Wesley, and that was because I couldn't understand why a student who is still attending university insists on wearing what appears to be graduation robes and a cap. I might have bought "it's the school's uniform" if we hadn't already seen Phoenix as a student.

Apollo's design initially bugged me because I thought his hair wasn't busy enough (thought process: "If they're going to do that with his bangs, why not go all the way and mess up the back as well?"), but I've grown to like it.

Well...you see, the character designer of AJ and Raise From the Ashes is a new one, maybe wild character designing is his style...so I think it's quite normal that someone like it and someone don't. It's just up to the players' taste. =D

He does have a sport jacket of sorts. That's what the purple thing is.

My favorite character design is Ema's, by far.

But Rise from the Ashes didn't have as much craziness yet, maybe to not stick out as much from the rest of game one. Gant is the only one that seems somewhat extravagant, and I also remember Meekins' blur lines (at his salute) as being new.
Thanks for confirming that there's a new designer, though :3

Hey, Chinese people do it all the time. I should know, I'm part Chinese. Lololol. Okay, okay, that's really bad.

But uh, there are tons and tons of anime and came characters that are designed with... closed eyes. XD Like Brock from Pokemon.

Actually, he's the only one I can name off the top of my head at the moment, but I know there are lots. It's pretty common.

It's not really closed eyes, I think. They can blink, as far as I know, but they're just really slitty eyes.

The 'closed eyes' look is basically just a way to make characters look sly or mischievous.

Not really. Raise From the Ashes is only a single case and we've got Gant, Meekin, Angel(...her hat)and cowboys(two guys, yes, even one of them died long time ago). How many characters looks weird in AJ? Wocky, Daryan, Klavier(not really weird as a rock star, but I will take him in count anyway),Drew and...?

=_,= I didn't read the AJ designing book from the beginning to the end(because I don't know where to download an rar... 囧), but I did walk through all PW ones very carefully, Raise From the Ashes included. They shocked me from time to time, to be honest. It seems that the designers drew all their wild ideas down and pick the most ...let's say, normal ones. They are as wild as the AJ characters like Daryan, if not more. According to the pages of AJ designing pages I've read, the new designer doesn't usually bother to draw a lot draft like what the previous designers did. In most of time he just follow his feeling and intuition, because the character designing are not necessary to follow the script. ( Actually... it usually works in an opposite way: the script follows the character designing.) That's why I said it maybe the new designer's style, and I have no problem with that.

If you want to really broaden it, there's not a single character in AJ that doesn't have some quirk/s or interesting wardrobe that you know the designer was basing them around. Even the more 'normal' looking characters, like Kristoph or Apollo, have funky parts of their hair.

But again, that's just taking it broadly. There were only a few characters in AJ that were flat out weird. If anything, I'd say that the character designs are just becoming more interesting, compared to like, Penny.

Well...I have no idea about your "weird" standard.I just picked the characters I think maybe turn out to be weird-looking in the real life.

Yes, I did ignore Polly and Kristoph because they are main characters, and we all know Nick and Maya and Edgeworth and Pearl and Godot and Dahlia have special hair styles. XD
