Look at it this way. All her life, Ema dreamed of becoming like Gil Grissom or Horatio Crane from the CSI shows.
Instead, she's become the token detective guy those shows have that no one cares about.
Personally, I'd like to see Gumshoe return in GS5, give Ema a boot up the ass, and remind her that being a detective is still an important job.

As Mia Fey said, your choice. Ema is not exactly a cranky bitch or completely pissed, she's just.... grumpy. That's the bes way to explain her. She isn't very helpful when you first see her in three of the cases, but after some nitpicking and doing some other things.. she'll quickly warm up to you and help you out.
And don't let one character turn you off from a game, I'm pretty sure everyone hear has at least one hated AJ character but still thinks the game is fun.

Heh, did you try saying it out loud? You can tell it's a punny made up name immediately if you do that.
I rather didn't like Ema in 1-5. She was too Maya, and I don't like Maya that much. She would say/do stupid things like Maya but in the name of science rather than hamburgers and whatnot. Maturity is a major plus... (as well as the investigation minigames!)

No but srsly, Ema definetly wasn't my favorite in GS4 or in 1-5, but she also isn't my least favorite. She can be a little bit of a bitch and kind of annoying but hey who isn't?
