I ask because of the part where Trucy's helping Hobohodo play poker. The part about winning with a fast hand doesn't make any sense. No hand is faster than any other, and the strongest hand will win unless there's a successful bluff.

Based on that, I think they might have played Mahjong in the original Japanese version and localized it. But I don't know for sure. So, my question is, was it poker originally?

Why would they play Mahjong and not poker? Poker is played everywhere around the world, isn't it? Anyway, I remember when the game was only out in Japan and the first screenshots came in - they played poker, too.

(By the way - Mahjong isn't some kind of...gamble, right?)

It is in Japan. Well, anyway, if they played poker, that's odd. What do you mean by a fast hand in poker?

They could be referring to the players, as opposed to the cards, in a manner of speaking. Find a way of quickly convincing your opponent that you have a better hand, and cause him to fold without thinking twice.

In Poker, often when there's more than 3 people at a table, most of those people are going to fold as soon as their hand is dealt. It's not like the movies.

I play some poker, Katana. I know that. And it also seems like something you were waiting for the chance to spring on somebody, because it has nothing to do with the question. :godot: But she says "You can win with a fast hand." I don't read anything about bluffing. And if his hand is really that great, he might decide to take the risk anyway. The point is that it doesn't make any sense. Normally the advice would be just to fold, or to bluff if he wasn't confident. But she doesn't say anything about bluffing.

Maybe :minuki: just doesn't know the rules?

Mahjong isn't played with playing-cards. If they were playing mahjong, CR would have a mahjong tile in the Evidence section. If they didn't play poker, it must have been some sort of card-game.

So Trucy said something about a "fast hand". What's more likely: that it was a completely different game in Japanese, and they changed all the sprites and images to poker-related stuff for the English version but missed one line? Or that they simply mistranslated?

...That is illogical. I don't think CoA is going to seriously alter sprites and cases just because of localization.

And if it was Mahjong they would have kept is Mahjong... (that and I don't know if they game is really that popular in other Asian countries aside from China, it's origin)

Not another grape juice vs. wine scenario...

Wow, people seem to be all over telling me things I know today. :pft:

Yeah, Mahjong is played with tiles. But it's the most likely gambling game where a fast hand can beat a strong hand.

There's a pro league in Japan, and it's played in parlors and everything... it's really very popular over there. They have a different rule system from the Chinese.

Well, if you don't think they would change the sprites, then I guess it's just something that's kinda weird. :yuusaku:

I played the Japanese version and it was poker. Mahjong(...... 花札 in Japanese...?) is totally a different thing...

Talking about the "fast hand", I believe it has something to do with the playing rule.

Full house...let's see...

For example:

First both of two sides take five random cards.

Phoenix: X, X, X, X, X
You:spade 5, spade 3, heart J, diamond 6,diamond5
Each of you have three chances to switch a card.
Show down time.
There are some certain pattern gain credit for you, like all cards in hearts or something. It seems to be full house in the case.
I've never played this poker game anyway...I learned it from a Japanese GS site.

(BTW...playing mahjong is not necessary to be gambling as far as money dealing is not involved. )

Question (since it was brought up): Did they purposely change all wine references (save Engarde's cellar) to juice?

...No. As I can recall, they only changed a few things like names and Maya's noddle addict.

It's a running joke. Phoenix's grape juice addiction was grape juice in the Japanese version as well so it wasn't changed in the localization, but it's amusing to have them look like what would be recognized as wine bottles. Alcoholism isn't funny, but a grape juice addiction (particularly in wine shaped bottles) is rather amusing.

Takumi(scenario writer) is good at the magic of cards.
He performed magic by a test for employment of Capcom.
Perhaps, he likes playing poker.

(I learnt playing poker in Dragon Quest 4. I don't know the rule of the mahjong.)

Well, it's not necessarily gambling, but neither is poker. :jake:

Anyway, if it was poker in the Japanese version, that clears up my question. Thanks.

Not surprising. Go to the center of GoDaddy's farm in Scottsdale and you'll find a soda shop. They have everything. :shy:

Look for stuff like Martinelli's and my favorite:

WARNING: Almost a spoiler...

Sonoma Sparkler.

Juice-Soda(yes that's right) contained in wine flutes. They are without a doubt THE best thing ever! :yuusaku:

Just remember you're 110% screwed when you drink massive amounts of it. Whether you eat anything or not.

You don't know Sonoma and you don't understand weird looks if you're ever spotted with this stuff. :shy:

True, soda is in bottles like that. I've seen it with sparkling soda and grape juice (wow, just like in the game... :think-think-think:)

It took me a whole minute to figure out the 花札 is just a common term for playing cards. I knew I've seen those characters before but...It eluded me. :yuusaku:

Hey guys, i can say mahjong is hardly possible for the original setting. That is, to play mahjong you need FOUR players, but for a crime scene you'd want as few as ppl as possible (except the victim and the killer). So,
Spoiler:
to play mahjong there should really be a fourth person, namely Kristoph Gavin, involved.
